We have put quite a few kilometres under our belt over the past 2 days so today is to be one of more relaxation in our enclosed yard at our accommodation, a look around the village and a trip into La Rochelle about 10km away this afternoon. With the sun shining and prospects of good drying weather it was time to catch up on washing. The only thing we didn’t have was a washing line or clothes horse so Gretchen improvised using coat hangers for shirts etc on a mobile clothes hanger from the bedroom. Such are the talents of a BBA V3 traveller! It didn’t seem quite appropriate to put the clothes hanger outside in the courtyard but with the huge bi fold doors open the wet clothes would still get good drying conditions. Carole, ... read more

We decided that Saint Nazaire is a lot larger in size than we had thought, after the day we spent here in 2013 while we waited for our Citroen to have some repair work done to a fault in the braking system. Then we had wandered what we thought was the main shopping area and a promenade that circled a bay near the entrance to the harbour. Last night’s arrival proved us wrong as the city stretches out a fair way and there is significant construction going on that is going to make the population larger in years to come. So we had to devise a plan to get ourselves to the beach, drive the promenade that we had walked around and then head south towards La Rochelle and our next accommodations. Over breakfast which included ... read more

I went to la Rochelle two times while I stayed in a nearby town called Rochefort for 5 weeks. The first one was when Anik (my host in Rochefort) took me to La Rochelle to see a Russian tall ship and the second one when I went to see a film festival. La Rochelle was founded in the 10th Century and became an important port in the 12th Century. The main activities of the city were maritime trade and commerce. La Rochelle has had a very interesting history; including being the Knights Templar’s largest base in the Atlantic, having been under English Rule, having participated in the 100 Years War, becoming protestant and having suffered at least 2 sieges in its early history, the last one by Cardinal Richelieu. It had booms and declines, moments of ... read more

Riding on the French rail system is quite different from the Spanish. If it’s just an ordinary train ( not an TVE i.e. fast train) since I have a Eurail pass I don’t have to boo...k a seat but just get on and find a vacant seat, and be ready to show my pass to the inspector by completing the information for that journey on the pass. It seems strange but it seems to work! I sat in a compartment with 7 other very hot people (the AC did not work) on the train from Bordeaux. It said on the departure board that the train would be 15 minutes late leaving. That then became 25 minutes and the people in the compartment indicated that this is normal for the French train system. 45 Minutes late and ... read more

We should have felt fully rested after a day off…..not really, the disco from one of the Chalets on the site was still rocking at 4am when Ian went to complain (along with many others), so slightly tired but with Oliver wanting to go we packed and were off in no time. We had spent the previous day doing very little but we did discover a fantastic Buffet Chinese – Hot Wok - (700 metres from the site) for 13.90 Euros each, (Approximately £11.30 GBP), eat as much as you can – and we did! Before going back into lazy mode for the rest of the day. Woolly says – I quite enjoyed the disco!!!! They played one of my favourites, all together now “I like to move it, move it”!! We were off to the ... read more

Monday 17/09/12 La Rochelle K&O are going back home today but as they have a late flight out of Orly we had time to go up to Le Mans for a quick look. Marnie had recommended us to see the old town and as it was just 45 minutes up the road we were off. OK, it was worth a look but as Lyn and I were heading in the opposite direction I didn’t enjoy it as I probably should have if I had had more time. We walked around for an hour but then we said good bye to our friends and set our GPS for La Rochelle while they stayed for lunch and then drove up to Paris. In La Rochelle we went straight to the tourist info only to be told that there ... read more

I blog from La Rochelle where centuries ago much of France's trade with the new World took place, i.e., the West Indies, Canada and Louisanna. Our hotel is loated in the centre of the action and just five minutes walk from the old city and harbour. Stores and restaurants line the area and people mill about enjoying the seaside ambience. Our hotel once housed the first King of France. One of my favourite places is Honfleur, another coastal town near Le Harve. It's magical charm captivated me and along with my wife (who did not eat shellfish) I enjoyed a platter of seafood comprising baby lobster, shrimps, clams, periwinkles, whelks and oysters. It was simply magnificent amidst the medieval buildings casting their reflections into the tranquil waters of the harbour. This is surely a place to ... read more

Over night stay at Le Brevedent, lovely, but wet, so decided to drive on to next stop, Le Mont-St-Michel. Arrived at St Michel, sunny and warm, got on bikes and cycled to the Abbey. Breathtakingly impressive, well worth the visit, even though it is very commercialised. Stayed one night at St-Michel, next morning traveled on to Erdeven. Weather back to rainy and cloudy, cycled to beach, which would be lovely in sunny weather, but a bit bleak in drizzle. Stayed one night and traveled on to La Rochelle. Now we are in the sunny side! Will stay here two nights, then move down the coast.... read more

Spring isn't just in Bordeaux; it seems the whole country has jumped on the bandwagon. I passed fields while on the train that a month ago were covered in snow but are now blooming and bursting with color: lavender flowers, green grasses, yellow blossoms, apple trees with their pink flowers; it's almost enough to make one feel optimistic. We've come to the point in my travels where I'm not doing much of anything and choose instead to pass my days on the beach and tanning. Ok, to be honest I am burning, but I find my new "rouge" coloring to be worth the price of lying by the water and reading a good book. So this is how I passed my time in La Rochelle, with sun and more sun. The old port is protected from ... read more

The trip down to La Rochelle (which means "Little Rock") lasted three hours. Patricia arrived at the train station at the appointed time and it was then we discovered that the there were two other passengers in the small hatchback. Patricia was enroute to visit her grand daughter in La Rochelle and had numerous belated Christmas gifts strewn throughout the car. Jean-Claude, a French/African graduate of transport logistics was another passenger and France, a retired English teacher of Madagascan heritage, was the last fellow traveller. Of course, their luggage was crammed in as well. We repacked the car, organising luggage to maximise space and in order of who would be dropped at their destination first. There wasn't much space left for people despite out best efforts. Patricia was a master of the autoroutes, the French motorways. ... read more
