Travel Blog – France 4 Okay blog time. What time is that? Oh it’s the time I should be working on my personal statement but I can’t think of how to improve it so I need to do something while I mull it over aka I have banished myself to my room until I finish it so I need something to procrastinate with. Just in case you don’t know I am trying to apply to graduate school for next year. I want to get a PhD in developmental psychology and work with kids with ADHD. But hello what I am doing I came here to escape from writing about that. If you interested I will give you my personal statement- crappy though it may be at the moment but will hopefully be excellent by the end ... read more
We had caught the train from Bordeaux further South to Toulouse. For 70 euro we were there in just under 3 hours, pretty good we thought, especially considering there were more than 3.5 million people nationwide protesting about the government changing the retirement age from 60 to 62 - trains were scarce! It was an early start from bordeaux, we've done earlier since but it was all worth it when you didn't end up missing a train! Hasn't happened yet, fingers crossed. We had a fantastic time in Bordeaux, we only wished we were more cashed up so we could enjoy all it had to offer food and drink wise. One thing is for sure though, you certainly don't need a lot of money to stay in a decent hotel as we found with the hotel ... read more
Making some French Generalizations
Published: October 20th 2010Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » ToulouseTravel Blog - France #2 Okay I will return to my pre-France adventures with Maura next entry (I am writing it now) but I wanted to update you all on France and the goings on here, so I’ll talk about my first few weeks in France. Typical French-ness at work as I will show you here: Typicality 1: Can’t get a stamp when I enter the country. Of course I have to go to 3 different offices at the airport just to find this out (all of those before say they are sure I can get one if I just go to the next office). I am not too surprised by this since it is part of the Schengen space but whatever I wanted to try anyway to perhaps make the visa process easier. Typicality 2: ... read more

Published: August 31st 2010Europe » France » Midi-Pyrénées » ToulouseThe headquarters of Airbus is in Toulouse, France and was the stop for a quick visit and overnight stay. Airbus's biggest pride and joy right now is the A380 (just like Boeing has the 787). Airbus does all the final assembly in Toulouse where they have a enormous air strip and plants that all the planes get assembled, inspected, and delivered from. Many of the part come from several different areas of Europe, and must be shipped to Toulouse. I found it very impressive the methods of which they must employ in order to get the fuselage to the plant. The fuselage is too big to be brought in by train which most other parts of delivered by. Instead, the different part of the fuselage, which are made around Europe, are picked up on several barges ... read more
We spent our last day in Toulouse buying fresh cheese to bring back. We had dinner and stayed near the airport, turned in the car in, and arrived by 5AM for our 7:30 flight only to find out that yes, the French air traffic contollers strike did affect us. Luckily, we were only delayed leaving by one hour and had time to catch our connection in Frankfurt and plenty of time in Charlotte after customs to catch the flight back to Austin. We were much luckier than anyone scheduled to go through Paris that day. We were back in Austin after being up for 26 hrs! Then end of a wonderful trip!... read more
A bit after 3am on Saturday the 31st, Halloween morning, we 3 American Palau residents got out of bed and gathered our belongings for the day's journey first to Toulouse, 3 hours away by bus, and then to Nice, another 6 or so hours via train. At a quarter to 5 we met our 4th traveling companion at the bus station and promptly boarded our Novatel shuttle. After a little less than 3 hours of half-sleeping and bobbling our heads every which way in darkness, we arrived in Toulouse. We hadn't anticipated being able to make the 8:17am train and instead opted for the noon-ish one, but realistically we could have made the earlier one given the demonic/rapid pace the driver took. That being said, we now had some 4 hours of kill in the city ... read more
My first day in France wasnt exactly a smooth one. The train I wanted was cancelled and the one which followed terminated one stop before the station where I needed to catch a connecting train. So myself and about 20 others were left stranded in a one taxi town only 5 minutes train ride from where we actually wanted to be. Madness! 2.5 hours later me and two boys from Ballarat finally made it to Cerrbere station. Then we got to hang around there for another 1.5 hours for another connecting train (because of course we'd missed the first one). Eventually, after a full day of travelling (in which more time was spent just hanging around) I made it to Toulousse. All I can say is Im glad I love reading. Hehe. SO, day 2 in ... read more
We recently visited Sarlat, which at only 2.5 hours drive from Toulouse, and discovered a typical regional French medieval village. Sarlat has one of the most beautiful open air markets of France, and is reknown for this. Hard to choose amongst all the types of fresh sausages, from duck meat sausage to porc sausage with truffle, or from porc sausage with roquefort to porc sausage with wild mushrooms. So the only thing is to try them all!!!! You have an incredible choice of walnuts all prepared in different ways, truffles, truffle oils, mushrooms, duck liver (foie gras). A truely incredible shopping experience for both the cronic household chef to the occassional weekend pot roast warrior. Visit, taste and enjoy!... read more
