MONDAY, OCTOBER 15, 2012 - Today we took a drive up the coast to the furthest eastern point of mainland Spain, Cap de Nau, with a detour into Moraira. This little town was a real find. Firstly, there were no buildings over 3 stories high, a feat in itself on the Costa Blanca. Secondly, there was a lovely little restaurant where Kevin and I had a wonderful lunch - Del Mar Restaurant. www.delmarspain.com The nice thing about this restaurant is that the food didn't look like it had been thrown on the plates, and everything had flavor. I asked if the chef was Spanish, because the presentation looked so different to what we had seen in Spain. He was Bolivian. Tonight we had a farewell dinner with our German hosts, and went to a German-run steakhouse ... read more

I arrived in Toulouse yesterday, to a cute little hostel that is located about 1 minute away from the subway. The owner is very nice, accepts my unpractised French with no questions, and gave me lots of places to go for photographing neat buildings and views. The city itself is pretty big, with a river (Garonne) in the middle, and several canals. The Canal du Midi is quite long, and goes down to Carcassonne. I hope to walk along or cycle along that when I get to Carcassonne. Here in Toulouse, it's not very pretty. The river though, is quite nice, and they have boat tours (bateaux mouches) that you can take. I might go on one when I come back to Toulouse on the weekend. There are lots of old building here, with lots of ... read more

Day 18 Tourists in Toulouse today. We do the city and see lots of old buildings again. And more churches again...... Different again. City is not as clean as others we have seen (dog shit all veer the footpaths). Still a pretty city for its sights, etc. We go into the town hall which in itself is like parts of some of the palaces with big halls, paintings on the roof, etc. Domone of the petite train tourist trips around the city and then back to the house. Domestic things like wash the car - with the use of an e-wash and fill station for the first time and then back to another feast of fois gras, rib eye steak, and fromage to finalize. Tough life here, not sure how we will cope when we get ... read more

Day 17 After a feast called breakfast we are off into the outer towns around Toulouse with Alain and Josette as tour guides (and drivers). First stop is Gaillac where we get tourist information and look at the river which is sort of dammed to move water through the hydro system - lots of water rushing over the edge of the dam. Great sight. This is also the name of the wine area (Gaillac) that we are about to explore. Then on to Castelnaud de Montmirail, a fortified village that is built again on a hill with the main town centre found via a maze of little streets. Very medieval in appearance. Another church - seen and been in more in the 17 days than for a very long time....... This one not so well maintained ... read more

Day 16 On our way to Toulouse today. Spoke to Alain this morning and he suggested a stopover in a little town called Cahors. Decide to stop earlier to get a bite to eat and pull off the motorway at a random exit and head for that village. We wind our way through the back roads (with Stella telling us to turn around all the way) and find the village of Uzerche. The village sits in the bowl of the valley with a little river running through it. Spectacular views of houses, palaces, etc. as we look upyin to the hills. Find a bar that is open (today is a public holiday) and as we walk in the lady asks if we want some food. Realizes we speak English and proceeds to tell us what is ... read more

Hi there - It's me again. We are off on our travels again tomorrow and am soooo excited!! Some people have asked me to do this again and I should imagine there's others who are thinking - Oh Noooo - not again! So to those I am sorry but you can always ignore me - I wont mind and I wont know!!! We set off tomorrow morning on our way to Santiago in Chile. We are flying via Heathrow and are very much looking forward to meeting up with the boys for a lunch in London before continuing on our way. It's an overnight flight going by Sao Paulo which will take eleven and a half hours and then changing there and onward to Santiago - another five and a half hour trip. I am not ... read more

Ok people, as I promised in the last posting, we are back to sailing the blue, happy waters of France and will be avoiding the dark abyss of my self-analysis. So, grab a friend, grab yourself, or grab whatever, because here we go... From windy Narbonne I jumped on a rickety old train and landed myself smack-dab in the middle of snowy Toulouse. There's no taste of home like the sharp, icy prick of winter air that burns your lungs and freezes your lips so that you can't feel the snot dripping out of your nose. My hostel happened to be out in the bum-stink part of town, about seven metro stops away from the station. My least favorite part of traveling is the time spent on the metro with the great big pack on your ... read more

"There are years that ask questions and there are years that answer." -Zora Neal Hurston I had thought this would be the latter kind, but I'm discovering that clarity is elusive and doubt sets in like a fungus: always beneath the surface, ready with new tendrils. I can't say what exactly has me locked in this self-reflection mode but it's a difficult trap to spring. Maybe it's the fact that what my trip is and what I had expected it to be do not coincide; that change comes so unexpectedly that any reaction feels dreadfully belated; or that what I had hoped to find here, knowing in my heart I wouldn't, is indeed absent or fleeting. This is not a post about a place I've been to see. This is catharsis. I recently met someone on ... read more

Voyage en velo Nort Sur Erdre, France - Guadix, Spain, which started on the date of 11/09/11, barely keeping in itself the smallest part of symbolism. The first part of the trip is done - by the 29th Sep, we made it to Toulouse. 17 days of biking have taken us through almost 900 km, sliding places and faces some of which will remain in the memory much longer than the others. Now that I'm trying to recall the fragments, let me flashback for a moment. Day 1, Nort-sur-Erdre – Bouaye , 42.5 km, 3.5 hours Day 2, Bouaye – Prefailles , 54.5 km, 7 hr. Early morning of the 11th September in Blanchetière - Amandine's Father's house. Woken up and discouraged by the rain. Still not packed. Shambles. Excitement about something we've been waiting for ... read more
