Bonjour mes amies! Nous vacation c'est manifique! We left Troyes and headed to Avignon on Sunday - seems so long ago now.... Avignon need I say is truly stunning - the French know how to preserve their heritage and are generous with the access they allow everyone to it. We looked for a hotel and could not find one so decided to start camping. We stayed on a site called Camping Bagatelle. Ok for overnight and quick access to the fortified town. Avignon is situated on the Rhone which is a beautiful river. We pitched the tent and set the cooker up and made ourselves comfy for the night. Slept well, tent is amazingly easy to pitch and very comfy. Not a site you would want to stay on for more than a night but I ... read more

I've just been running around all week, friends and family have been arriving at various hotels around the area to celebrate my birthday, so I decided to make this a small blog about my week in the Aude. Dates are not used to protect the innocent. Caroline and I arrived in Toulouse on August 4 and immediately get in line for our rental car. It turns out to be a VW Polo (Diesel). I have been forward thinking, and purchased a second hand TomTom in the UK, so I plug that puppy in, and lo and behold it doesn’t work. It's back to the map, which is not good for my relationship with Caroline.. After much bickering and a little bit of cursing on my behalf, we finally reach Mailhac. Our hosts have made a wonderful ... read more

Alas we are on the train back to Paris. The notion that our holiday is nearing its end is most disturbing, so it is appropriate that we take this time to reflect on our activities whilst in the region. Our first excursion included a vide grenier (empty attic sale in Trebes). It is reassuring to know that car boot sales and flea markets around the world are remarkably similar. I found a couple of bargains including a tripod and some jewellery. Our friend Ingrid found an enormous copper pot for our host and we concluded the day with a quiet drink accompanied by some spanish style music. The next day saw a trip to La Grasse and thanks to some dodgy navigation ... visits to Termes, Couiza, Limoux and dinner of Cassuolet at Castlenaudry. In Limoux, ... read more

12-17 September We are in Montlaur, in the Aude River area, the occitane region. Known for its charcuterie (saucisson etc), fromage de mouton (sheep’s cheese) and naturally some ‘fromage de chevre’ (goat’s cheese) too. Moreover it is known for its cassoulet … in particular in Castelnaudry. We are in a typical medieval stone village. Our gite is a renovated cottage which overlooks the local river (although it has been cemented in and is now a mere trickle). The locals are very friendly and assess in the first 5 minutes of meeting - oh those ‘sympathique’ Australiens! We speak with all we meet. Joss with a friendly “bonjour”, Mary with a little more, finding out a few more details … The gite overlooks the local church where the bells toll twice on the hour (in case you ... read more

I liked fireworks. They were a winter thing for me. Part of the regular calendar when all the children were small was getting warmly muffled up on November 5th with woolly hats and scarves and sensible shoes ands going off to one of the municipal bonfires in Sheffield, then later, Leeds. Elinor, a Bonfire Night baby, used to be convinced the festivities were for her, the birthday girl. Close to the blazing fire, the cosy scarves would come off as everyone relaxed, finding friends to talk to as we waited for the fireworks to begin. Then wonderful whirling, shooting, exploding, racing tracks of colour twirled and whizzed through the skies for maybe 20 minutes, and it was all over for another year. We’d leave the comforting fire behind, and wander happily home for winter treats like ... read more

Today we were up at 6.00 a.m. Well, we weren’t really, the clocks changed in the small hours, so 6.00 was the new 7.00, and our bodies were complaining. (Especially Malcolm’s and mine. I’d insisted last week that the clocks had changed, and dug us up just as early then, but only so that we could spend an hour looking for a non-existent bar to while away the time before we met our fellow walkers, once we’d realised my mistake). This time, we were heading away from the Ariège into the Aude, our neighbouring département. It can be just as varied and glorious in its scenery, but today we were driving through the almost Tuscan landscape of rolling hills, pretty hillside villages, and vineyards, vineyards everywhere. It’s gorgeous of course, but those of us accustomed to ... read more

Lazy days in Languedoc We were looking for somewhere a little different but still easy to get to. A little off the beaten track but not so isolated as to be inaccessible. France (but not Provence), Italy (but not Tuscany). The weather should be as guaranteed as it could be (difficult these days) and the atmosphere Mediterranean. A speculative wander around the Ryanair website showed value in mid week flights to Carcassonne - a city about which we’d heard quite a bit but had never visited. In fact we weren’t really sure exactly where it was. The South of France is quite a big place! We arrived in Carcassonne on a sunny but blustery day in September. The airport is definitely toytown but someone looks as if they have big plans as the diggers were out ... read more

Yes, we're still travelling!!! Now a word of warning. If you are going to read the Full Monty get yourself a cuppa & a snack - say no more. It's been a while since we last posted a blog, but, well, we've been having too much fun & thought we needed to give you a break from all my ramblings. The Shane Summary: Spent October travelling to Malta, Poland back to England & then November we stayed in the south of France doing stuff including a day in the Principality of Andorra. End of November travelled to Frankfurt where the journey continued to New York for a week (for some. I returned home for a week for work) & then on to Canada where we are now. The Full Monty: When we last posted on 2nd ... read more
