Today is our last day in Paris. We leave for Berlin tonight at 8:20pm. We checked out of the hotel at 11--they were kind enough to let us leave our luggage at the hotel for the day so we could finish up exploring. We started out by going back to place du terre to get a few souvenirs (which we are already out of room for...try telling that to the girl). We had lunch at the bottom of the Sacre Coeur at Le Ronsard Café. I had a croque monsieur and a warm goat cheese salad, viv had une salade exotique (it had baby shrimps, a whole avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, chicken)…very satisfying. Then we headed over to the Longchamp flagship store near the concord station (I guess this is a big deal). Viv bought a few things, then we walked by the les Jardins des Tullieres one last time. After, we headed over to the Cimetière du Père Lachaise—the most visited cemetery in the world. There are around one million graves here in some 70,000 tombs. Viv was freaked out and waited at the entrance while I checked it out. It was huge and I didn’t have a
map (except for the one I quickly drew up in my notebook), so I only saw a few notable graves—Chopin, Molière, and Jim Morrison. Others that were there that I didn’t get to see included Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Colette, Delacroix, Pissaro, and Gay-Lussac (a famous chemist and physicist that viv was excited about). Afterwards, we grabbed a light dinner (pizza poulet et un sandwich jambon crudités) to bring with us on the train, got our luggage and headed over to Gare d’Est. Viv carried the small rolling suitcase and I had the two huge ones (they must have weighed at least 60 pounds each, guess who decided to pack a ton). That was an adventure, but when we finally got to the station, everything went by very smoothly…minus the hot weather. I was not happy. We got on our train and found our “room.” It was AWESOME! I thought we were going to have to share a room with two other people, but it turns out we had a little room to ourselves. There was a little sink/mirror, an electrical outlet, and two bunks. It even had air conditioning (the first time all trip). We slept great. Viv watched
some Sex & the City, I listened to my ipod (mainly Brand New and Copeland) and looked out the window.
I’m going to miss Paris. I feel extremely lucky to have been twice already, but hope some day to return. I think we accomplished a lot during our stay—we hit almost all of the major sites (some more than once…ahem), and even got to see some other lesser-known ones. I loved the food, the language, and the metro system (so easy to use, cheap, convenient, and trains came every 3-5 minutes…just wished there wished there was some air conditioning). Everyone was very nice to us and were always willing to help. I’m know these blogs didn’t nearly cover our stay in France, but hopefully they gave a good general idea.
Some final stats for Paris:
Days: 6 days (5 nights)
Steps: ~64,878
Distance walked: 34.83 miles (not including a whole day in which I forgot to bring the pedometer)
