Hello everyone!
What a great few days it’s been. For Thanksgiving my friend Franzi and I decided to have our own Thanksgiving dinner. We cooked for the other English, German, and Spanish assistants and it was a great success; everyone enjoyed our food. We had chicken (in replace of turkey), stuffing, green bean casserole, mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and apple pie. It was nice to have dinner with friends since I wasn't able to go home for Thanksgiving. After dinner, I called home on Skype and said hello to everyone who was having dinner at my house. My mom even brought the lap-top into the dining room and had the web-cam on while everyone was eating dessert. It was nice to see everyone even though I couldn't have a piece of that delicious looking pumpkin pie!
Dan arrived Friday afternoon and I said good-bye to him this morning. We had a lot of fun and it was great to see him. It was a mini vacation for me too since we did some sightseeing and ate and drank some great Alsatian food and wine.
Saturday we took a train to Zurich, which took about an hour and a
half. I think we had a good day in Zurich and had a great lunch at this Bierhaus. We had sausage and hash browns and some beer. I didn’t exactly plan out our day there, so I think we could have booked an earlier train back to Mulhouse. We bought some Swiss chocolate of course and I even bought a magnet to add to our collection at home.
Sunday we were invited to the French family I have lunch with every Saturday or Sunday. They made sauerkraut and ham, with sausage and of course some Alsatian wine with potatoes and cheese and fruit for dessert. After lunch, we went to the historic car museum in Mulhouse to watch the youngest, Estelle dance and then walked around for an hour to see all the antique cars.
We then took a train to the town of Colmar about 20 minutes north of Mulhouse. Here we walked around the Christmas markets and did some shopping. It’s definitely a cute little Alsatian village especially when the lights come on at night. We even ran into Santa Claus walking around the streets with a donkey and got our picture taken with him.
Dan asked if we could get our picture with him, and so we had to sing a Christmas song. I chose “We Wish You Merry Christmas,” and then asked someone to take our picture. Sunday night we ate at one of my favorite restaurants and we had tarte flambée of course!
Monday morning I had class from 10-12 so I left Dan free to wander around the X-mas markets around Mulhouse and do whatever till I was finished for the day. We then took a train to the town of Thann because I thought it looked like a cute town and supposedly to beginning of the famous “Route des vins d’Alsace” (wine route). However, I forgot that stores are closed on Mondays, and restaurants are closed between 2:30 and 6, so we passed the time in a bar and the grocery store. Not too exciting. It seemed like a cute little town and could have been interesting if everything wasn’t closed. We headed back to Mulhouse and relaxed at the apartment before going out to dinner. Overall, it was a good visit and we had fun together.
Sunday was exactly 3 weeks till I come home for Christmas.
I’m really excited to come home for that week and see everyone. It will be a good visit and then I think I will be ready to return to France and finish out my contract. I come home officially on May 6th. I’m having lots of fun and everything is going well. I have some friends who will be flying back with me for the New Year and we’re going to rent a car and drive all around Alsace, some of Germany, Switzerland, and who knows where else. That should be fun and it will be nice to have a car for a few days and visit some places I’ve wanted to see.
Talk to you later....
Kristen 😊
