So hard to decide where to begin! Tallinn is such a surprise considering it’s our first step into what was an eastern block country and after some of the beautiful places we’ve seen it was great to be able to be awe struck again. See Dad, I’m not as much the cynical bitch, as you think. I love these old cities protected from the outside world by their 16th century city wall. The cobbled streets and wonky building and lanes you can get lost for hours in! Yes even the local who have to dress up in their corney old fashioned outfits to attract the tourists! The one blight on my stay was that my camera was playing up, or more specifically the card in my camera which resulted in an almost teary moment when I ... read more

I was up bright and early this morning for our expedition around northern Estonia. I was greeted at the front desk with some good news - my bag was in the country and being sent my way! Woo! The Dutch guy who owns the hostel wrote a guide book (THE guidebook in the Dutch speaking world, apparently) to the Baltics and was going to be showing us some cool places around the north in his funky old blue minibus. You always seem to get a good mix from Youth hostels - today was no different. Accompanied by an older Taiwanese lady, a student of Chinese literature (who spelled every other word out to make sure we understood her), and a crew of other backpackers we took to the roads. We drove out of Tallinn past a ... read more

So, the adventure really begins! I was up at 5.30 this morning to catch the plane from plymouth to Gatwick and then onto Tallinn here in Estonia. I made the trip fine, however, my baggage obviously wasn' t so fortunate and hasn't made it as far as Tallinn... After filing my lost baggage report at the airport, I attempted to find my way to the hostel. I took a bus that looked important and hoped for the best. The bus took me through some pretty ropy looking neighbourhoods and past numerous sex shops and what I assume are brothels down to the harbour. Tallinn is used by Finns who come over from Helsinki (100ks over the water) to buy cheap booze. And boy do they buy - I saw one guy with a fold-out trolley filled ... read more

It was! Took it easy the first day. Day two got up early to see the city. Turns out (We weren't paying attention when we arrived) we were situated right in the middle of the old town. The polish weather followed us and it poured rain the whole day. This drove us to a tour of the "Oldest City Hall in Northern Europe" and vast improvement in our knowledge of limestone. Who knew there was so much to know about limestone...... In fairness the interior was beautiful and quite interesting. We found an english bar as the craving for burgers was too strong. Ended up heading back there that evening for a few drinks. Met two guys, one Estonian and one Russian. The Estonian guy convinced us he had contacts in every nightclub in town but ... read more

Its hard to say that we were in St Petersburg because so much of it was seen through the windows of a bus and as far as I am concerned unless I can mooch into whichever street/restaurant/shop or museum I please and make some sort of connection with the people then it seems fairly pointless to be there at all. I would have got much the same impression from a travel programme on TV. Anyway the guide, a Russian called Vladimir, fixed us all up with headsets and then put his own on " Ladies and Gentlemen, can you hear me?" We all shook our heads. So he told us to press the button at the top repeatedly which we all did with no effect. Then someone asked him if he had got himself properly plugged ... read more

The day before, we bought our hydrofoil tickets for roundtrip to Tallinn. It's outside the EU, so we had to go through passport control each way (adding new stamps to the passport -- rare since travel in EU doesn't require). Tallinn is an old medevial town. The old town is basically intact, although some parts were bombed in WWII. We always have thought of it as Soviet, but it was free before WWII (and under Swedish, German and Russian influence in the centuries before). The town and is really more Nordic than Russian, and apparently was happy to reopen interaction with Finland and Sweden, just being a short hop across the Baltic Sea or Gulf of Finland. The old buildings, cobbled streets. Old town is basically all pedestrian, and apparently floods with tourists. Again, old churches, ... read more

Day 106: July 20 - FINLAND - Helsinki, ESTONIA - Tallinn Accommodation: Tallinn Backpackers I tried to sleep in as long as I could today after the extra awake time forced upon me, and I had no plans after seeing what I wanted to yesterday, so I stored my bags and went straight for the net cafe, which was in fact a decent cafe with about 8 internet terminals. Surprisingly it's hard to find a net cafe that serves a good cafe coffee. I scored a yummy Finnish-style mocha and a cake to go along with a couple of hours of net surfing, then headed off towards the shops with a good caffeine buzz. I basically wandered around the shops and then headed towards the harbour to find out how to get a ferry from Helsinki ... read more

Geo: 59.4389, 24.7545Today was our free day in Tallinn. First stop for Bridget, Anita and I was the beauty salon. Anita and I had a 30 minute massage and it was great!! Loved it, especially in this cheap country. We then walked into the old town, looked at souvenirs, walked down little lane ways and under arches. Had a long lunch. Then thought we had better do the educational thing- we went to a museum- 'Estonian History Museum'. The building was built 6090 years ago!! We did some browsing of the clothes and shoe stores. Anita and Bridget went back to the hotel, I kept on window shopping and ventured into the new town and found a shopping centre with air conditioning!! Great place when its hot outside and your hotel room doesn't have air conditioning!Had ... read more

Geo: 59.4389, 24.7545Had a late start today with a 9am brekky. Drove to the port with plenty of time to spare, so we all ran off to do some last minute shopping at the market. I bought a pair of earrings. We caught the Super Sea Cat (which had a picture of a pet cat painted on the side of it) to Estonia. The trip went for 100 minutes. We entertained ourselves by testing perfumes.Once we docked we drove to the other terminal to pick up new people who have come from Sotckholm by ferry. There were six of them. Then we drove two blocks to our hotel. We had time to freshen up and then meet in the lobby at 2 for our walking tour of the old town with George. We entered through Fat ... read more
