Hello Everyone! This is a rather long entry, so if you want the short version here it is: now in Prague, Vienna was great, but exhausting, my butt hurts from the hike we took, wine+tram= fun!, prague is cheap and we are having language issues (but this has been an ongoing problem).
Amy and I are now in Prague, just coming from Vienna. Vienna was great! We got there two nights ago and went to an opera. We managed to get really cheap tickets, only 2.5 euro! Although it was standing room only but it sounded great.
Since we stayed longer in Munich, we only had one full day in Vienna so we crammed a bunch of stuff into one day. In the morning, we did a tram tour out of a book that Amy had. We occasionally got off, walked through the park or took some pictures of statues, buildings, etc. Then we went to the Kunst Haus Wein. It's this really bizarre and playful art museum of Hundertwasser. We both really enjoyed that.
Next it was on to Grinzing and the wine hill region just north of the city. We took a bus up to the
top and had lunch at a cafe with a great view of Vienna. Then we took a nice hour hike back down and got silly on the way(no wine yet). We got spit out into Grinzing where there are lots of vineyards and restaurants. We met some people from the states that loved the place, but it was more touristy than we thought it would be. We bought an inexpensive bottle of wine from a Chinese restaurant and made our way back to our hostel. We were hopeing to see people waltzing outside on a terrace in Stads Park, but they were inside because the weather was too unpredictable, or so we were told. We had gotten our wine bottle opened because we thought we might sit in the park and sip on it there, but instead decided to go back to the hostel. We ended up riding around on the tram and went through half of the bottle! I managed to get us back to our hostel all on the tram! (the subways can be sketchy plus it was so nice outside, we wanted to be above ground). Later, I sat out in the garden of our hostel and
talked to some other travelers. Most of the people I have met are studying abroad and traveling for the summer. I'm not sure why I never figured that out while I was in school.
We got up this morning and it was on to Prague! We managed to get a hotel room for only 20 euro a night each. I had plans to stay in a hostel outside of the city, but met a guy off the train station who hooked us up so oh well, we will only stay there for 2 nights because I like the hostel atmosphere more than the hotels(although I don't sleep as well). Our room is a four person, but just the two of us are in it right now. We have our own kitchen, fridge, stove, table and chairs...it's like an apartment!
Everything is much cheaper here in Prague. I just had a huge plate of excellent pasta for around 6 euro. Czech hasn't made it to the euro yet, so we are getting used to the difference. Our hotel guy said that they will never change to the euro. Even though they are now a part of the European Union, they are still independent and are their own country. He was very adament about making this point. The history of the Czeck Republic is interesting. Tomorrow we are doing a four hour walking tour so I will learn a lot more. So far I've only gotten to the 1920's in Amy's book on Prague that she brought. The train ride here showed off some beautiful country. It is definitly a different world!
We will be here for 6 days, one of our longer stays. So far we have done so much on this trip, but it has only been one week! It will be nice to relax somewhere for a while, do some laundry, rest, and shop! Amy and I talked at dinner and decided that one full day for shopping is not too much. We may split up for a day or two. I want to go to some art museums and she wants to do a day trip outside the city. I met a guy in Vienna from New York and he is on his way here. I'll e-mail him and maybe we can see some sites together. He just graduated from art school so we have something to talk about although he is almost two years yonger than me! He's nice though...
The language is strange here. We aren't sure yet how to say hello, please. thank you, etc. We'll figure it out soon enough though.
I will write again in a couple days and tell more about Prague. I am looking forward to learning more. Unfortanatly I haven't yet figured out the picture thing so...sorry! When I get home I will post most of them somewhere for all to see. I have allready taken close to 200 pictures!
Lots of love - Courtney
