After sorting out apartments this morning, I moved across into the one with the balcony and sea view. Very nice little spot as I look out over a mini orchard - in the backyard of other places here. Once I was settled in, I decided to walk along the coast in search of a beach to spend some hours at. The coastline is stunning with lots of rocks along the way, until you come around a corner and see a beautiful bay. I walked past the first one as I knew there were several more further along a rocky bush path. Each one I came to was more beautiful than the last but in the end I stopped at one called Robinson's. I hired a sun bed as the beach was all stones, and it only ... read more

We get up early (not a problem as we have already been woken by the man next door being violently sick) and set off to Plitvice Lakes National Park; a chain of 16 lakes linked by waterfalls. Once we have bought our ticket and selected which route to follow, we are taken by shuttle bus into the park. The bus consists of three carriages and we’re in the back one which is quite disconcerting; the driver slows down for bends then accelerates out of them, which means we accelerate into the bends, which feels wrong. Once in the park, we commence our walk around the lakes. It’s not as easy as I’d expected because much of the route consists of boardwalks constructed from logs, they’re uneven and not particularly flat so walking on them requires concentration. ... read more

Happy birthday to my niece Vasana who is 9 today! Another travel day! Up at 6:15 to pack and get ready for the day. Taxi was due to arrive at 7 as I wanted to be at the airport at 7:15 - my flight to Geneva was due to depart at 9:15. I watched the clock count down the minutes after 7 with no taxi arriving. The lady at reception called them at my insistence and it was always "2 minutes" away. He finally arrived at 7:15 then drove like a bat outta hell ! I had been told it would only take 15 minutes to get to the airport but of course it took longer than that, even though this guy probably broke quite a few rules to get there when he did. When we ... read more

We get up early and set off on the 158 mile drive north to Plitvice National Park. It’s going to be a shock to the system; after 2 weeks of travelling in temperatures around 30 degrees, by night time it will be minus 2. The majority of today’s route is along the A1, a lovely modern motorway which is a relief after some of the gravel tracks we had to negotiate in Bosnia and Montenegro. It is, however, not cheap. In 100 miles we notch up over £10 in tolls. The drive is another spectacular mountain extravaganza, only this time on a proper road. It’s an incredible piece of engineering consisting of a series of bridges, raised sections and tunnels. One tunnel is 5800m. That’s more than a parkrun worth of tunnel. On the other side ... read more

The last few days have been quite busy so today is a day without driving or city sightseeing. We walk along the Split seafront to the enormous Marjan Forest Park, stopping for an al fresco breakfast on a picnic bench on the prom. It’s almost like being back in Bournemouth, except it’s a sunny 28 degrees. We visit the former home of Ivan Mestrovic where plenty of his sculptures are on display. A game the old man likes to play with sculptures: to stand next to it mimicking the pose. Either Mestrovic had some very flexible friends or else a vivid imagination. He also appears to have had an aversion for wearing clothes. We wander round the villa admiring his work, stop for a drink in the little café overlooking the sea, then continue to the ... read more

Up early 6am for an early morning walk. Really good as streets just cleaned and nobody around. Went up to rooftop lookout and sun just rising over the town. Walked down the alleyways to the harbourfront. Then back up to the north gate, great inside the palace, no tourists just a few like me taking photos. Back for good breakfast then walking tour of Trogir at 10am. Arrived Trogir, walked the old town which is supposed Venetian like although we all thought more like hilltop village in Italy or Provence. Lovely alleyways and small stone homes squashed up together. Ended at Church of St Laurence which just opened at 12noon, so was quite busy with tourists. Very interesting inside then Pio & Rob climbed the bell tower for fantastic view of Trogir and waterways. Looked around ... read more

Today, after breakfast in the fake forest, we return to Croatia and the city of Split. We settle our bill, which comes with a free pipe (never know when that will come in handy) and depart. Once out of Sarajevo, we drive along the Neretva river until the SatNav tells us to turn right, into the mountains. We climb and climb and climb. The views are spectacular. Eventually the road becomes a gravel track and we have to pick our way along 4 km of trail. It’s so ‘off road’ that after a long period of not seeing another vehicle, we start to get passed by 4x4s with drivers and co-drivers wearing helmets. We’re caught up in some sort of Paris-Dakar style rally. Finally we reach the top, there’s an archway, the tarmac appears and we’re ... read more

After good night sleep, thanks to sleeping pills, departed 8am. Crossed the border into Bosnia, no problems at border control as mostly aussies/Nz. Stopped at roadside cafe for quick pitstop, bought apricot tea. Crossed border again into Croatia, then lunch at old mill riverside restaurant with local foods. Lovely clear river waters. Followed the coast passed beach resorts on the clear Adriatic sea with white beaches. Makarska Riviera very pretty. Arrived Split at 4pm to the new Cornaro hotel. Quick freshen up then walking tour with mikeala? Showed us the roman palace remains of Diocletius. Amazing ruins and history. Back to hotel, quick drink at cafe across the street then bed.... read more

After dinner at Magellan restaurant came home straight to bed, everybody exhausted. Rob slept well, Kelly still jetlagged. Up at 5.45am for good buffet breakfast then on the bus at 8.25am Stopped at lookout with best view of the old town Dubrovnik, absolutely postcard vistas of the town and coastline. Then down to the town for a guided tour by Ivana around the town, very busy with tourists but still so pretty. Walked the walls, very warm and crowded. Back down stopped for a cool drink then taxi back to hotel. Relax for the rest of the afternoon and will have dinner in tonight.... read more
