Thursday 16thMay Krka National Park We are now in Northern Dalmatia We arrived at the campsite yesterday and booked on a guided tour of the National park for today – our first rain free sunny day for a while. The park covers an area of 109 km squared of the Krka River. It includes waterfalls that have been built from travertine, limestone that has settled out of the water and accumulated, which apparently is quite a rare phenomenon. The park is also home to a wealth of plant species, fish and a stopping off place for migratory birds. It also shows evidence of human habitation since prehistoric times and includes the remnants of the former Krka Hydro-power plant which began operations in 1895 just two days after the first hydro-power plant in the world (in the ... read more

In a buffeting wind we drove along the sea coast to the historical city of Pula. Our guide, Branca, rode in our bus for this first half of the day to give commentary and answer questions. Susan asked a series of good questions that informed us about high taxes: VAT at 25 per cent, income tax at 45 per cent, and property taxes, all of which pay for government services, war reconstruction, generous maternity leave, and good health care insurance. Housing costs are high because of demand and supply. Often university education is pursued in Italy, because it is closer than either Zadar or the capital, Zagreb. In the back seat, Gary and Mici giggled over phone photos, conversing in an odd combination of German (Gary knows some, Mici is studying), English (Mici is good at ... read more

We woke to a sunny day full of promise for a spectacular trip to the top of Mount Ucka. The highway was winding, and the asphalt road up through the parkland was even more winding, with potholes. About half way up the mountain, to our initial delight, the trees were decked in crystallized snow. To our dismay, eventually there was enough slushy ice on the road that the two buses had to stop. Our drivers worried that the tires would not be able to negotiate the downwards return journey if there were more ice higher up. Full of vigour we donned our warm clothes and jaunted along on foot, enjoying the beautiful photo ops … until the ice became too slippery for walking safely, especially for our two sub-tropical companions from California and Hawaii. The men ... read more

No complaints about rain again. Today it snowed all morning! Our departure from Starigrad was in the rain, but since we were driving, that was ok. In dramatic swoops we rose through the mountainous hills of the coast into steep rocky landscape. A fast toll road took us through a 12 km tunnel into a higher, lusher plateau dotted with bushes. Further on, in a long valley, cows were grazing. Substantial farm houses and loosely formed villages showed that agriculture sustained this area. Almost imperceptibly the rain passed through sleet into light and persistent snow. The temperature had dropped from 12 Celsius to 3 Celsius. For some time the snow didn’t stick to the ground or the road; until it did tinge the grass and then accumulated on the roadsides, and finally coated the trees. Even ... read more

Today was an awesome day. I took an optional tour to istria which was about 45 minutes from opatija. It is Croatia's truffle region and is also known for its wines. Besides France and Italy, croatia is the best place for truffles. The area is only an hour from the border of Italy. Trieste is the closest Italian city. There is a significant Italian population and influence here. Mario andretti, the race car driver, is from motuvan, a town we visited. First we stopped off to meet wirh a woman who, along with her well trained dog Nera, hunts for truffles. She gave us a demonstration of how the dogs find them. It was very interesting. I took a video. All my pix are on my camera. Next stop was motuvan, a beautiful Medieval city. We ... read more

Today was a transit day. Left Zagreb this morning. Really nice city. Today we visited politics lakes, a beautiful national park in Croatia, one of 8. Took a walking tour for about 2 1/2 hours. It was supposed to rain, but luckily it never did. We are now in opatija. Really pretty Adriatic coastal city. Reminds me of the riviera. Great views. I can see why Europeans want to come here for their holidays. I'll add some pix now. ... read more

Dnu maly plac, okolo mury kde boli ... read more

Vonku pekne slnecno a len slabucky vietor. V pekarnicke kupujem ranajky. Pekarniciek je tu dost, to sa mi lubi. Plnene listkove cesto do seba natlacene pri pristave kde ponukaju vyletne lode do np brijuni. Samozrejme v sezone. To teraz moc nehrozi. Popri moru okolo pristavu kde kotvi kopa jacht sa dostavam ku kostoliku Uznesenje Blažene Djevice Marije. Okolo neho prechadzam do fajn stareho mesta. Pekna stredomorska architektura. Je este len 9.30 tak vacsina obchodov zatvorena avsak kaviarnicky uz funguju a ludia popijaju svoju rannu davku. Jedna tour grupa. Cez Park Montezaro, v ktorom kopa skolkarov, sa cestou nescestou dostavam k pevnosti Fort Casoni Vecchi. Kruhovita stavba obklopena priekopou. Nuz dalsi ciel pevnost ... read more

Z ubytka vypadnutie okolo 9.00. U mlinara kupene orechove hniezda a popri divadlu cez trh smer pristav. Na trhu kopa zeleniny. Dobre to vyzeralo. V kaviarniach ludia popijali kavu resp male flaskove pivo. Okolo chodili grupy nemeckych dochodcovskych tour. Po prsacke a vypiti kapucinka smer uzke ulicky a podzemne tuneli. Vchadzam vchodom pri Katolícky kostol ... read more
