Wake up to the sound of running water from the lakes and waterfalls. Very peaceful. breakfast is much better than last nights meal, and an added bonus. One of the Tennessee ladies (family of 5 women travelling with us - more on them later) has found my missing bag lock from last night. The world is in harmony again...... Meet our guide (who Viktor later told us her name translated to Snow White or something like that - didn't quite fit the body though). This walk went to the lower lakes just as pretty but much busier with 2 waynfoot traffic. No real chance/time to stop too much as you were being pushed from behind all the time. Lots of pretty sights all the same. Finally get back up to the top when Viktor announce we ... read more

July 11 I came to Zagreb from Belgrade on the 11th of July. The bus departed at 11-30 and arrived at about 16-30 to Zagreb’s main bus station. Though the location of my hostel was quite close to the station I failed to find it easily at first because I had photographed the map on my phone with poor quality and was unable to discern the street’s name. However, I went in the correct direction right from the start. I tried to find a newspaper stand or something like that to buy a map. Of course I had better take a map from the train station or the bus station right after my arrival, but the thought didn’t cross my mind. I bought a very expensive map near the train station, instead of taking a free ... read more

Thursday morning started with a continental breakfast, which we figured would be light pastries. Oh how wrong we were. James said it was the biggest breakfast buffet he had seen – there was a selection of cheeses and marinated veggies, meats, yogurt, smoothies, eggs, sausages, and hot dogs (every little kids dream come true – hot dog for breakfast), local pancakes which are like crepes with jam in the middle, and American pancakes. Additionally, there was a huge selection of breads and pastries with a machine that dispenses Nutella! Or something like Nutella. Espresso drinks are a huge deal in Croatia, so there is also a machine that makes a good cappuccino. There was also champagne set out for those inclined to start their day with a mimosa. Feeling stuffed and caffeinated we set out to ... read more

After last-minute changes in flight schedules (our original flight from Chicago to Paris was canceled, and the two of us were booked to Paris on two different flights), our adventure started late Wednesday afternoon in Zagreb, the capitol of Croatia. Zagreb is a very walking oriented city and our hotel was nearby to the city center, so it was easy to get around. After checking into the hotel, we started our trip by visiting the Zagreb Eye, which is a lounge on the top of the tallest building in the heart of the city. We got some great photos, and were able to pick out many of the city’s most well-known buildings. Following the Eye, we went to Moonshine, a whiskey bar, where James sampled some whiskey and Stacey tried her first Croatia white wine - ... read more

With no update on Luggage-gate, we have now kitted ourselves out with the essentials and a modest new wardrobe, courtesy of H and M. We've changed our plans and are now staying on in Zagreb for a third night (no hardship) in the hope the cases will catch up with us. We wandered around the city this morning, went to the Dolac Market, bought four amazing vintage industrial enamel light shades for our kitchen and are currently sitting on our balcony drinking a local beer ( Staropramen - I can highly recommend it). Sitting looking out over the cathedral you can see how they have laid out the buildings in a perfect circle, all looking in on a central plaza. Behind are a range of small mountians, that seem to follow the same shape. It creates ... read more

Well, that was an interesting start to the holiday. It's so far been a day of excitement, disappointment, frustration, annoyance, jubilation and nervous anticipation (and it's only 1.15pm UK time). We arrived at Dusseldorf airport to find our flight had been cancelled and were told to go and get our luggage (that had been bound directly for Salzburg) off of the carrousel. It didn't show up, so after being sent back and forth between different desks we were told to go to AirBerlin and book a new flight and they would have our cases. They didn't and first told us they were lost and then that they were still in London, only to find they had them after all. I'd "sensibly" put my spare contact lenses in one suitcase and my glasses in the other, so ... read more

What an awesome City!!!!!! Check for extra photos at the end. Sunday 10 May: Despite the late night Zachary was still awake at 6am! The hostel has no breakfast or kitchen facilities so we had to potter around until 7:30 when we headed off to the nearby main square, in the hope of finding a café that served breakfast open. No such luck but McD’s opened at 8 so we went for that. Their breakfast menu is a bit different from NZ’s but we all managed to find something we want and it was cheapish. Then we headed back to the hostel to pick up the laundry and we got day passes for the trams (30 kunas or about $6 for adults) and I established which tram to get and where to get off. The laundromat ... read more

Saturday 9 May: After managing to get the blog published and emails cleared yesterday Zachary and I managed to find the playground after a brisk 919km walk. I am really impressed by how fit he is. It was good to find it and he enjoyed himself immensely. Of course, being a typical kiwi boy, he took his shoes off. The ground was all stones and he ran around on those quite happily, getting filthy feet in the process. This caused comment from at least 3 other adults at the park. I don’t think Italian children are ever without shoes! Got the bus back and then dinner and an early night ready for an early start. I didn’t manage to exchange any euros for Croatian kunas yesterday so that was a priority today. I thought Zagreb businesses ... read more

25 April 2015 Saturday. We had to return our rental car in Croatia to avoid excessive drop off charges. Zagreb was the nearest town in Croatia where a rental car agency was located, and Ljubljana was on the way there. We left Lake Bled early as this was to be a long day. We wanted to drop off our bags at our sobes in Ljubljana so we wouldn’t have to carry them with us around Zagreb and then back to Ljubljana on the train. This we did with dispatch, and were soon on our way to Zagreb. We arrived at the rental car agency about noon to find it closed on Saturdays and Sundays so we dropped the keys and contract into a slot as directed. Fortunately we weren't charged for any damages to the car; ... read more
