Another overnight train took us into the heart of Sofia. This time round, there was minimal fuss on the train as we slept throughout the ride after a fulfilling day in Belgrade. The sight that first caught my eye has to be the snow-capped Vitosha mountains in the background. Reading up on Sofia city before arriving has set my mind on making my (and our) way up to the top. Honestly, what's more soothing to the mind than to have nature at the doorstep of a bustling capital city! After 2 weeks of exploring cities, this is the perfect retreat for us. And I knew that I've always missed hiking and scaling mountains since high school days. Fun Facts Upon reaching the main station, we bought tickets for the connecting trolley bus bringing us into the ... read more
Turkey (Istanbul) and Bulgaria (Sofia)
Published: June 17th 2012Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » SofiaAs I flew from Dubai to Istanbul we flew over Saudi Arabia, part of Iraq, and part of Syria. A few things crossed my mind: First, I knew I was looking down on one of the most dangerous places in the world. Within the land I was able to see there was a civil war that had been going on for years, a fragile democracy that wasn't able to protect its citizens from violence, and enough oil to run the world for the next 100 years. That was just to the right. To the left there were military forces killing its own citizens, a crackdown on western media, and a huge human migration heading to Turkey. Secondly, there was so much history I had to fly over and not get the chance to see because the ... read more
Well it's something like 10 PM, and I'm hard at work trying to avoid writing a research paper that really needs starting. Still, when something's a week a way, it is so, very, hard to care. Ah well, I'm sure I'll think of some way to make the-company-which-must-not-be-named exciting. Let's back up a bit though shall we? Bulgaria for a start really was awesome, Romania maybe just a tad less so, but we'll get there. The trip was done with three others, a first for me, Robbie, Aubrey, and my old roomate Matus. For Bulgaria I think I can say this. Welcome to Eastern Europe: As Matus occasionally commented, Bulgaria resembled more of central Europe ten years ago, it’s just a little further east (duh). Orthodox churches dot the area, though with not as much frequency ... read more
Just let me hear some of that rock and roll music...
Published: January 19th 2012Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia City » SofiaFor those about to rock, Bulgaria salutes you! As a boy who loves rock and roll I think I've just about died and gone to heaven in Sofia. The country has a rich history stretching back many centuries but one thing is clear as soon as you arrrive ... they love to rock! From the first taxi ride, and in the hostel, and on to the clubs; it's 100% ear splitting, bone jarring, head banging rock and roll that's guaranteed to get the blood pumping. Everyone seems to know the words to the classics, and it's like being in the middle of a neverending rock concert. My first night started with stimulating conversation in the company of a group of young travellers. As the evening progressed they went out for a meal, but I decided to ... read more
Alexander’s ability to bond with the five million stray cats in Eastern Europe has not been useful to the four of us on this trip, to be honest it has been tiresome. His degree in journalism is useful, as we have decided to put our feet up and sit this blog out forcing Alex to pull his weight. Here is what our guest blogger has to say about the Bulgarian part of our mini trip from Istanbul to Romania. ... Sofia is the capital city of Bulgaria - that was the complete sum of our collective knowledge on the place as we climbed down from the steps of another all-night Balkan bus. Sixty-two hours later, we’re only slightly wiser and just as tired. So, what have we learned? 1) Bulgarians are exceedingly polite drivers. After ... read more

Off to sofia on a 11 am train. The cart I was in had a broken heater so I was crammed into another cart for 6 hours of a boring train ride to Sofia Bulgaria, the capitol. I am only going here to catch a flight tomorrow that I haven't even booked yet. ha. Got into sofia around 7 pm and started to walk to my hostel. Tad chilly outside but I managed. I get to the right area but the directions started to be a little weird and I asked to Americans where it was and they pointed me in the right direction. Well I thought they did.... I went they way they told me and I looked for about 20 minutes and then I hear two guys calling out DALLAS. I realized it was ... read more
I didn't realize how much I would like Sofia. It is such a tranquil city with a manageable center, full of cafes and good restaurants, parks and streets lined with trees that help keep the city cool in summer. The food was so good, especially the grilled vegetables at Happy's. Apparently sushi is quite popular in Sofia. The parks are a very popular place for Bulgarians to hang out and in the evening they are packed. Even some of the very small parks had beer gardens. One odd thing is the trams stop right in the middle of the street without any safety platform for people to stand on. Doesn't seem very safe. There was a free outdoor concert in the park, which was quite a major event with a full orchestra. It was sponsored by ... read more
I love the train. I remember how excited I was when boarded one for the first time. There is no better way of transportation. Well, I thought so... Serbian trains are a whole new adventure. So, we are on our way to the train station. It is way too early in the morning. I am having a coffee and checking my e=mail in the Internet cafe close by. From my computer's chair I have a perfect view on the mess coming. The train is just a mix of wagon from all across Europe. I now know what they are doing with their very old trains. Inside, people are smoking in the corridors and children's are running and jumping everywhere like it is the first time they are allowed to do so. I am looking for a ... read more
Sofia, Bulgaria - Home of Mud Wrestling Superwomen
Published: August 17th 2011Europe » Bulgaria » Sofia CityDays 8 to 14 One week in exotic Istanbul and off we were on the midnight express to Bulgaria hopped up on fizzy bubbly and as always, the excitement of going somewhere new. I was sad to leave Istanbul and happily could have stayed there another week but with the world to see, we had to move on. The overnight train was comfortable enough; basically, I didn’t see a single large insect and due to thoughtful planning managed to avoid the infamous bathrooms for the entire ride (I ended up being dehydrated and sick the entire next day but it was worth it). The train was old as dirt and maybe made it up to 15mph when it really got going. Every 30 minutes stern-faced officials came around barking orders in Turkish or Bulgarian to check ... read more
The bus from Skopje to Sofia took 5 hours and I was accompanied by another Aussie - they get everywhere:-) Arriving in Skopje I didn't have a clue where the hostel was so got a taxi and as usual he tried to rip me off trying to charge me in euros rather than Levs! The Hostel was shocking (Internet hostel) rock hard mattress and 1 bathroom for the entire place but I've had worse. The location was fantastic though, right in the heart of the city, next door to the only veggie restaurant in Sofia and above an Irish bar - what more could you ask for:-) Plus the bar sold one of my favourite beers - Zagorka and I had a few of these with my new chums from the hostel, a German guy and ... read more
