Needing an excuse to go to Frnace for a booze run we decided to team up with the van deventers and rather than a day trip extended our time to a night in Bruges too.

Leaving the house at 7am and being in Bruges for lunch is a result - having just driven back from Yorkshire today too, it is really quote close - and well worth the effort. We effectively had a free weekend, the money saved from the wine and beer we bought went into board and lodging for the day/night.

Statying in the Bruges YHA was a stroke of luck. 15 minute walk fromt eh old centre, we had our own rooms and en suites - bunk beds and a patio/garden - all for less than 50Euros! Plus parking and breakfast..... couldn't have been any better.

We unloaded the cars and headed straight into town, foudn the most expensive restuarant and devoured mussels, prawns, asparagus, and ice cream. Nice - but quite dear - we didn;t check prices before sitting down - but hey, we'd saved that money by buying loads of wine.

We walked all over, really pretty city (very busy with tourists), lots of bridges (obviously) and lots of fun watching the boats go passed. Highlight was Heidi waving frantically at the people in the boats and in all the excitement dropping her lolly in the river. She was quite upset, but made for amusement later on - whenever we passed a bridge or looked in the river she thought she would find it again.

We had a picnic in the evening back at the hostel, and then turned in - dreading a night of noise as all the real backpackers returned to their rooms after a night on the town. It transpired that no-one went out - or we didn;t hear them - so a peaceful night was had by all.

After an excellent hostel breakfast - really was quite good - we headed back into town. Spotting a park the day before we thgouth we'd oblige the kids for a few hours - afterwards we did a bit more walking and a boat trips which was great fun - Heidi ate crisps the whole way and didn;t find her lolly!

Bruges, done we drove back to Calais to pick up our pre-ordered booze and then straight onto the tunnel - home before supper and bath time - very easy.

A great little break and well worth the effort - buying booze for teh summer effectively gives you a free weekend in Bruges so might make it an annual event!
