In generally better weather, we scaled the heights in Vienna today.

The morning was spent visiting Schloss Schronbrunn, the home of some of the Habsburg rulers until they were ousted at the end of the first world war. We started with a tour of about 45 state rooms (no pictures allowed) and then had a couple of hours wandering around the huge formal gardens including climbing up to a folly called the Gloriette for a better view of everthing.

After a delicious lunch in a restaurant recommended by the Lonely Planet guide we had a go on the Riesenrad, the famous Vienna ferris wheel built in 1897 and featuring in several films including the Third Man.

It was then back into the city centre to climb the 343 steps of the cathedral's skeletal Sudturm completed in 1433 after 75 years work. The day was finished with another look at some of the buildings we had seen the day before but this time in the sunshine.
