The Crazy Bum, the Gay Guy and the Real Prince Charming
Published: February 25th 2013Europe » Austria » Vienna » ViennaIs it really almost over already? Really? I had to take a moment to count the countries and places we’ve been to. Checked my itinerary. OMG, we’ve finally arrived at the last stop: Vienna. Two weeks is not enough. Well, even three months won’t be enough. It will always be insufficient when you’re doing what you love the most. Due to last minute reroute to Budapest, it means last minute ticket purchase from Budapest to Vienna as well. I lost the 9 am train ticket by minutes. It was there when I started, but it’s already gone when I refreshed the page. So we ended up taking the 7 am train. I actually don’t like the idea of an early start especially after late night out plus night train the night before, but I guess that’s ... read more
It was well after lunch by the time we got underway to Vienna and we were both relieved that the Garmin worked faultlessly. The Gally Apartment was clean, serviceable and almost comfortable! We had no issues with Mr Gally despite warnings from others on the “Tripadvisor” website and, in fact, we found him helpful. His advice was always perfunctory but covered the requirements and answered our questions about where to find a post office or a doctor. We have stayed in some dodgy locations, but this was the first one (that we know about) where there is a brothel in the same street. Fortunately no one was peddling their wares on the street so, apart from the neon sign, it was relatively discreet. The rest of our travelling day and the following morning were spent organising ... read more

So you can keep your Rome's, your Florence's and your Venice's. The most beautiful city in Europe is Vienna. My senses have been in overdrive today, We started with the grand tour as we usually do, this morning both by bus and foot. The beautiful Baroque architecture which I love. The grand duke in the 1850's decided to pull down the old city wall to extend the city and replace it with a ring road. So now there is a beautiful avenue flanked with the most beautiful buildings built in the old style. Except for the museums of which there seems to be a museum for just about everything, these buildings were often the palatial homes of the rich. Now they are hotels or apartments etc. Vienna is a very green city with some 800 parks. ... read more

Day 20 - Vienna, Austria Today was a short drive from Styer to Vienna, Austria. I little bit about Austria before I go on. Europe is distinctly different from North America and specifically Canada. People who have been to Europe will know this well. The people act very differently, usually they are speaking something othe than English, it is just very different. After some time in Europe, I find that I miss some of the things that I am used to back home, such as... eating dinner before 7pm. It is nearly impossible to find a good meal (other than Mcdonalds) before 7pm. There is some practicallity to this, it is usually hot, too hot to eat until 7. However, our Canadian stomachs do not often want to wait until 7. We have managed by grabbing ... read more
I love Austria! I can basically sum up our Austrian experience as: palace, apple streusel, film festival, palace, Wiener schnitzel, opera, palace, church, fortress, sound of music, Mozart, palace, church, chocolate cake. Repeat. We took the train from Munich to Vienna and arrived sometime in the early afternoon. Our hotel was nicely located about a 10 minute walk from the West Wien station (main centralish station), so it was quick to get to and check in. The weather was beautiful and it wasn’t long before we were learning a new city map and transit system to go find things to check out. Well good god, we got off at the Museum quarter and I almost died. This city is so damn gorgeous. There is an unreal amount of beautiful architecture, stunning statues, etc. We started with ... read more
Alle verabschieden sich von mir. Wahrscheinlich nicht einfach nur aus Spaß? Ok. Da hilft der O... read more
We got up early and drove south and west of Vienna to the mountain lake at Hallstatt. We had about 180 miles to drive and the weather, once again, was questionable. Fortunately, Heidi did her job and led us out of town without a problem. We arrived about 2pm at Hallstatt, which has been deemed a World Heritage Village. That's when our challenge began. The problem was the hotel was inside the "old town area" and was blocked off with a gate. Our guide book suggested that a guard would permit us to enter to drop our luggage. Well, that system has changed. There was no guard and no way to call the hotel. I parked about a mile away at a lot that had free hotel shuttles. That worked to get us there but the ... read more
Rain, rain go away! We had another busy and interesting day. We decided to follow a Rick Steves recommended city tour. We had our book and audio tapes with us and found them valuable to see so much in so little time. It would be easy to spend a week here visiting the museums and historical sites, not to mention all of the dining venues. The weather was overcast but not raining as we left the hotel. We started our walking tour at the Vienna Opera house. It is famous due to the various notable opera and ballet performers that have entertained there. English tour was about to start at 10am so we purchased tickets and waited inside the lobby for it. We met there another America couple with their teenage son there. They were from ... read more
