Today was SUMMER palace day...Schonbrunn and Belvedere. Just like Versailles, the Schonbrunn began as a hunting lodge in the 17th century. In the 18th century, Empress Maria Theresa mainly influenced the building activities of what we see today. The Belvedere was the summer palace of Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today the Belvedere houses the Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present day...including Klimt's 'The Kiss'. Our day ended with a walk through Stadpark, and dinner/concert at the Kursalon... read more

Arriving at Prague's main railway station to catch the train to Vienna was an opportunity to do some serious people watching and, since it was peak hour with people coming and going from every which way, there was much to observe. Once our train pulled into the platform it was a bun-rush to get on board although, as we had reserved seats, there really was no need to be quite so eager. But there's something about the excitement of train travel which encourages such behaviour. Settled into our seats we had four hours to enjoy rolling through the countryside - which was quite flat -before we finally reached Vienna. Once at the Kaiserhof Hotel there was no time to waste as we headed off to see some of what Vienna had to offer. I was last ... read more

We finally stayed at an AirBnB apartment and it is quite nice, everything is pretty new and we even have a washing machine, it's interesting to note, they fit everything you need in a small apartment (about the size of an oversized hotel room). Kids loved it! Now we are off to get some views of the city.... read more

Sunday morning, we went to Church for mass and to listen to the Vienna Boys choir. It cost us $9 to go to mass, so I figured that was my tithe! It was beautiful. We sat in a room on the second floor that had windows for us to look out onto the church or up into the gallery where the boys choir was singing. We were in the second row so weren't really able to look down into the church. There was also a television in the room with live feed of the mass and the choir. It was definitely an interesting way to go to church, but the music was worth it! After mass, we ventured downstairs to the Vienna Treasury which holds the Habsburg jewels and riches. I have to say, it was ... read more

We went to the Saturday market down near the ringstrasse. There was everything from fresh produce, fresh fish, meat, Turkish food, Italian food, Viennese food, candy, pastries, beer, wine, olive oil, clothes, toys, etc. It went on for several blocks. We picked up a couple of things, but mostly it was fun watching everyone. We bought some scarves and then our friend bought a jacket. Mom was pretty good at haggling the price down and Helen (friend from the cruise) and I were pretty impressed. We then made our way to the Opera house via bus this time since we were visiting places quite far from one and other. The Opera house interior was gorgeous! Very baroque. Once we were finished with that tour we hopped on the bus to see the Hundertwasser apartments. The artist, ... read more

Ahhhhh Vienna, the title of this blog for ar least 3 reasons. Ahhhhh because of the beautiful cityscape it has offered with its wonderful array of architecture. Ahhhhh because I finally managed to indulge myself on really fantastic cuisine all be it mainly Italian. Yes I know I'm in Austria but this is a country who just loves the gluten so nothing traditional for me to eat here, I'm afraid. The final Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh is for my behind after taking in a 3 hour cycle tour of the city. Although fantastic to see the many sights from the perspective of 2 wheels. I definitely prefer the 4 kind variety or my own two legs!!! :) This time I was staying in a hotel very close to the centre of Vienna and all the attractions, the Hotel Graf ... read more

Visiting Vienna is an immersion into elegance, refinement and the classical, especially if you enjoy their great music. Many of you who have visited will understand. We left our apartment and descended down the long escalator to the metro U1 that would take us to the centre of the city. Modern, clean and fast, we sped along, anxious to get our first glimpse of the heart of this legendary classical capital. After two flights of escalators we emerged and there, standing before us and the first structure we noticed - the imposing steeple of St. Stephen's Cathedral. Wow! What a welcome! It was simply spectacular! And that was just the outside. Upon entering, we were greeted by what I would consider to be one of the most fabulously designed churches we have ever seen. And we ... read more

We said good-bye to Mary and Chandler this morning bright and early as they took off for the airport. Then we took off for the hotel in Vienna. It was a decent hotel except for the air conditioning. They try to be very green in Europe so air-conditioning will only turn on once it reaches a certain temperature outside...like 99 degrees Fahrenheit! It never would turn on the whole time we were there, and believe me, it was not that cool. Luckily, I brought a travel fan. That fan is the most beloved travel item I own!! Much better than my travel curling iron that blew up. So our hotel was about 2 blocks away from the subway station which we started getting pretty good at using. We were on the green line which got us ... read more

Today in Vienna, we toured around the Ringstrasse. The Ringstrasse is a ring around the city that used to be the fortification wall but was ordered to be torn down by Emperor Franz Joseph in 1857. The walls were no longer needed and were impeding the growth of the city. The boulevard is 2.5 miles long and circles around Vienna's old town called Innere Stadt. We walked by the Imperial Palace where the Habsburg family resided and where the Spanish riding school and Lipizzaner horses reside. There was so much to see, it's hard to remember it all. We had dinner on the ship and the crew did a Going Away Show for us. I think their talent is in running the ship and not performing but it was fun. Sadly, it was the last day ... read more
