We left the hotel at 9.15 and headed off into town to Kalsplatz where we walked and picked up the Hop On Hop Off bus on the Yellow Line to Schloss Schonbrunn which was the residential palace for the Hapsburgs from the 16thcentury. Karilyn and I waited while the men fought with a huge queue to get tickets for the Classic Tour which would give us access to some palace rooms, the Orangery, the Privy Gardens, the Maze (we didn’t go to), the gardens and the Glorietta. There were wall to wall people in some parts but we just had to go with the flow. It was also warming up to be a typical Vienna day. We started with the Privy Garden which we were not impressed with. It had good structure but edges needed doing, ... read more

Oooh Vienna. Stupid song in my stupid brain ALL day!!!! So today was about Vienna. Up early we ate breakfast in the massive chandeliered room in the hotel (where Beethoven spent two summers no less) checked out and headed off. With both sat navs not working...... (Simon was sending us on a long back road route again ( cheers Simon!!) and Gert was inoperable with my internet having a melt down. Argh!!!! ) Fortunately we made it to the motorway 'freestyle' and by then Gert was back online and arguing with Simon. Sitting in the back was a new audition to the trip, Steve Gutenberg. Not the famous Hollywood actor but the 18 inch very fluffy teddy bear who until now resided at the last hotel but now sits in the back of the van wearing ... read more

I thought today would be quite straightforward. It wasn't. The first part went well, up early, not too hot, paid up at the campsite, waved byE to beautiful Bled and headed back up north to Vienna. keep in mind as you read what happened next that we have driven through Slovenia twice before and even a little bit earlier this week......just as we got to the Austrian border there is a toll check. We got stopped. By a very very scary short haired slovenian lady. Apparently when we thought we didn't need the vignette in Slovenia (a kind of motorway tax disc) we actually did so had been breaking the law for a couple of days. Again. ( I resisted, just, the temptation to say ' oh but before when we came.....' She proceeded to demand ... read more

Today was a continuation of the walking tour from yesterday. Today I covered the Museum Quartier, Capuchin Imperial Court and St Peter’s Church. I also ventured out to Danube Island (Donauinsel), which is an island that has been created in the middle of the Danube. The island has a number of different beaches and also has a wakeboarding course; which looked insane. The island, whilst being a great swimming/walking/cycling area for people, the island was actually created to prevent flooding in the main city area. A new channel was dredged (called the Little Danube) creating the island and helping to protect the city. It is also the venue of a music festival once a year.... read more

We have to confess to being slow off the mark this morning. Walking around in this heat may be taking its toll. But we did eventually get out and see a lot of Vienna, and we were really impressed with what we saw. This is a town that loves the arts....Brits might call it posh! The street performers here prefer harps and violins over guitars and accordions. There are incredible buildings and parks in the center of town that are very impressive. We walked from our hotel through the middle of town to the Rathaus, which is the town hall for the state and town of Vienna. I didn't really expect the route to be anything noteworthy but it was very special....it seemed that there was another stunning building, park or square around every corner, and ... read more

Thanks to Midge Ure and Ultravox we have had a theme tune for today. Our last morning in Budapest was relatively quiet. We visited the nearby market to get food for the train ride to Vienna and headed to the station via the very-modern and efficient subway/underground system. The train to Vienna took just under three hours and gave us new views of Hungary, along with glimpses of Slovakia to the north across the Danube. The train was quicker and far cheaper than flying but it did have one big downside....more stinky people. I'm sure that 97f/36c is exacerbating the problem but there is real opportunity around here for Right Guard. On arrival in Vienna we took a short taxi ride to our hotel. Much like Kraków we are just on the edge of the town ... read more

Wake up and get ready to leave for our tour of the Eagles Nest (where Hitler built a tea house on the top of a mountain to entertain and plan stuff). Eat emails and there is one from Avalon about our tour. Oh oh, low water and I have to call them straight away.... Finally get through, they have low water between their last cruise and ours (in Germany) so sounds like they might be late in re-positionimg the boat. They said we still had to meet them tomorrow for a 1400 bus transfer to Bratislava. Ok, will, see what happens then by the sound of it. Have to stay positive that they can get the boat to Bratislava. Off we go to meet the bus. Stop and get something to eat (breakfast not included with or ... read more

Last full day of this tour. Breakfast isn't anything flash today, maybe they are taking the medieval bit too far. Had some fruit and toast and that was enough. We have to walk up to the bus. It is a beautiful crisp morning and the town is very quiet. We get a few more snaps from the top car park and then Alex arrives with the coach. We go down the road, then all of a sudden he swings in a u turn on this small country road. What he can't do with this coach hasn't been invented yet. We roll on down country roads today towards Vienna. Interesting little villages, glad I'm not in the front seat today, not much room when trucks swish past. John and Jane have this honour and already she has ... read more
