My first castle!
The castle in Heidelburg Gruss Grot everyone,
Sorry its been some time since my last entry...I have no excuse except that internet is expensive...lame, I know.
So anyways, I last spoke about London, which to recap was absolutely fantastic. I saw the play at the Globe Theater, and the next day was spent with Marcelo (the guy i was staying with) where we toured Chelsea and met up with some of his friends who just so happened to be playing a jazz gig that night! There were 2 bands that played and they both were really cool, as were the people themselves. I felt comfortable with them right away, which they said was mutual and we had a great night which is always a nice way to finish off a city. And finished it was because the next morning I had a flight to Munich.
Now, the flight was at 8:00 which isn't that early, but it was completely on the other side of london which takes some time, and I couldn't help but think of my little watch with a little alarm not fully waking me and me missing my flight, so i slept at the bus stop (a little dodgy, a
little cold, little fun) needless to say, i made my flight, got to munich, dropped off my bags at the hostel, and headed straight for the big tents 😊 I had heard that they fill up really fast and I didn't want to miss out on my only chance at oktoberfest so I was there by about 2 hehehehhe, which is early when the plan is only: at first "kann ich bitte ein mass haben?" after the first "ein mass bitte" you get the picture. I'm sitting here somewhat speachless, I don't really know how to put Oktoberfest except that it was perfect. Its exactly as you imagine it is. I sat down at a table with 2 couples ( one middle aged one elderly) and they were hilarious, they knew some english and I knew a few words in german which was all that was needed. When a beautiful frauline would pass the men would stare and then tell me to go talk to her, and when the songs were played the women would teach me the words. It was fantastic, they were so much fun, and just as they were leaving a group of people around my age
traditional german meal
I love food so i photograph it. This is sauerkraut mit wurst and more meat that i had in Wissembourg...delicious! sat down next to me a the table, whom would consequently change my then coming week. The group were all really cool, really nice, and immediately adopted me as one of them. I was talking with one of them and she told me how she was actually from Karlsruhe which is close to black forest, I said I wanted to go to the black forest, she said come to karlsruhe, I said i would think about sans influence of vier mass danke. The next morning I was on a train to Karlsruhe.
I know that munich is cool but the idea of free accomodation, time with a local, and the opportunity for something away from the big city was too much. So, Karlsruhe.
Karlsruhe itself is nothing really worth mentioning. Its a nice, small city...the end. But I got to meet Hannah's friends who were very cool, very nice (somewhat of a ridiculously fortunate trend i've been experiencing) We had a great time together in the city for a couple days and on saturday, I went with Hannah to Heidelburg which is a beautiful old university city about an hour away. It has a beatiful old castle (my first castle!) and oh, it was just so nice. The next day, Hannah's parents wanted to take us both out to Wissenburg, which is just across the French border in Alsace, so we all went and it was a splendid occasion. The weather couldn't have been any better, we had a delicious lunch ( they were all keen to get me a traditional german meal, read - meaty, 3 different kinds) and the scenery was fantastic. Its all wine country, so its endless fields of grapes, which was really really cool.
However, I was feeling ansy to continue on along my journey. I had spent 5 days in Karlsruhe and I felt like I was getting too comfortable, it was too easy being with someone who could speak the language and always had enough money, etc etc. So last night I caught a night train (not without difficulties, I had printed out what I thought was the ticket but actually the receipt - it was german, what was I to do - but anyways, I got to the train and the ticket man is like sorry guy, this isn't a ticket, but I pleaded and begged and he sent me to the train chief whom, luckily, is a women. And as we all know, I have the smile of an angel and she didn't stand a chance, so needless to say, it was fine) Which brings me to here, Vienna. Its nice to be alone again where I only have to look out for myself and can eat when i'm hungry! (always an issue) and I can go where I want etc etc. At times its really nice traveling alone.
Anyways, I've just spent my dinner money typing this, so i hope you're happy.
I miss you all greatly and as always, I would love to hear about whats going on at home, be it what was for dinner or what pants you wore (hint hint)
