Day 18 - Steyr, Venice
My friend Walter has been gracious enough to tour us around the town of Steyr. Steyr is an incredibly beautiful and interesting town. The first thing you notice when you drive into the city center is the Stadtplatz or town square. It is a beautiful collection of finely retored old buildings. I dont really know hoe old but hundreds and hundreds of years anyways. I do know that the town of Steyr celebrated thier 1000 year anniversary in 1980 so the are at least newer than that. Our hotel is in this area in a restored chalet style buliding. The hotel is nagnificent but all of the staff here hate me. They are all girls dressed up in traditional Austrian dresses but they dont like it when you ask them questions. I also think they dont like Walter very much at all either. The girl at the reception dress is particularly mad at me for asking her too many questions. I am making friends all over the world. 😊 I feel like taking a sharpie and drawing a little mustache on her, but I think that would be going a bit to far.
Just
outside of the main town square you will find the confluence of two rivers, one a beautiful mountan stream that is perfectly clean and another dirty with the refuse of a larger city down river. It is a beautiful site to see these two fast moving river flowing together. These rivers however do creat prblems for the town as frquesntly flooding does occur.
There is a beautiful old church in Steyr as well. The first thing we noticed about the church is the beautiful stained glass. The glass work is worthy of churches in much largr centers and much larger churches. You can tell this was hostorically an important church and even today is still used for couple exchanging wedding vows. My friend Walter and Manuela (his wife) have just recently been married there and were nice enough to share their memories of that event. It looks like a wonderul place to be married.
After a tour of the castle and museum in town we were incited to take a Segway tour of the city. Segways are those little two wheel motarized vehicles you see people from time to time zooming around on. Sydney and I had so
much fun on the Segways. We had a three our tour of the city going up valleys and through nature reserves, in and out of medievil streets and just enjoy the hot day in a wonderful town.
The end of the evening was the perfect ending to a perfect day. Manuela had spent all day preparing a spectacular dinner (and taking care of her two boys) I am not sure how she managed to do it all, I am sure she is superwomen, all of this and putting up with Walter as well 😉
Dinner was Fridodden suppe to start - Essentially pancakes sliced up into a vegetable stock. It sounds a bit odd at first but it really was fantastic. I am told it is not really pancakes, but either way it is great.
Schidzel mid Pedeisilienkerdoffeln und reis + a salad that I cannot spell out as I dont have the special charatcers to do it. Translated it was pork and chicken scnitzel. It was so good. It was served with potatoes and rice and a very interesting salad. I have never seen a salad served this way before but it was marinating in a
vinigrette dressing. I am mostly used to pouring salad dressing on top of a salad but in this case the lettuce and veggies marinate in the dressing and it was super tasty and full of flavour.
The best part of dinner is always dessert and today was not exception. Dinner was so good that I stuffed my self well beyond my normal capacity to eat food. However, no matter how often I do this I usually find room for dessert. I love dessert. Manuela had spent a lot of time and effort making a traditional apfelseudel (apple strudel) my super duper all time favourite. It was soooooo good. I was so full that id took me a little longer to eat my dessert but I made sure that I finished every bite. The meal was a perfect way to end a great day. If you ever visit Austria, find a friendly family to cook a meal for you, wont be disappointed.
The day ended with Walter and I boring the heck out of Sydney with stories about a long walk across Spain. It was great to see him again and talk about old time. Tomorrow we will have
the chance ot visit with them again, we are looking forward to it.
