Travelling to Innsbruck. Stopped in very picturesque Salzburg. Salz meaning salt and burg meaning castle. Unfortunately being in the alps often means rain, and it did but we still got a look at the town and a walkabout. This is where they filmed the sound of music, which we had playing on the way. This was great because it was a reminder of what we saw and where each scene was. What we didn't know was the real Maria had a very small appearance in the movie. On our way to Innsbruck, we briefly passed thru a check point into Germany and then back into Austria. It was the quickest way to go, however it was very well guarded as they were checking every truck and bus for illegal migrants. That is the first real boarder ... read more

Geo: 47.8005, 13.0444 We awoke to mist and clouds covering the Alps. On a cold, rainy Pennsylvania day, this might have sucked. But the view here was almost ... natural. We had learned from talking to some folk in these here parts that for this time of year. It is natural. Once all awake we spent a lazy lazy Monday morning just hanging at the cottage. Around 11 we decided that we wanted to see more than just misty mountains so we headed out. On the way out we stopped at the store to pick up breakfast for tomorrow. Waking up to a house with no food kind of sucks. It's not lost on me that this is the norm for way too many people in the world :-(Visiting a grocery in story is, for the ... read more

Geo: 47.4392, 13.522After a nearly flawless flight, aside from a little turbulence over the North Atlantic, we began our decent towards Munich. It was dawn as I lifted the window shade and peered down onto the United Kingdom .... just in time to see Norwich, Lowestoft, Bungay, Ipswich, and London way off in the distance. As the plane transitioned from our cruising altitude of 39,000 ft the cabin lights came on and, being the high fallutin first class travelers we know are, were served breakfast. Quiche (of course) with a fruit cup. Coffee, orange juice, and I'm assuming more booze if you wanted. I'm not a morning boozer so .... Than again it was just past midnight back in PA so I technically could have but ..... I digress...... and then. Before I knew it. There ... read more

As we were slowly making our way towards Salzburg, I already had a feeling I was going to like this place. The closer to our destination we were getting, the more picturesque the scenery was becoming – slightly hilly green meadows with beautiful little houses scattered all around... Even without the sound of music, the hills simply felt alive! Yes, as corny as it sounds... we were approaching ‘The Sound of Music’ land after all and from what I have googled about Salzburg already, the town was thriving from that movie... At that stage we weren’t sure if we were going to take ‘The Sound of Music’ tour but were slowly swaying into that direction... One thing we’ve noticed about Salzburg straight away was that accommodation was definitely more pricey... and it actually took us a ... read more

This morning we docked at the small town of Passau. While some of the travelers would stay behind and explore this quaint town on their own, we signed up for a full day optional tour of Salzburg, the home of Mozart and where scenes from the Sound of Music were shot. We met our local guide Gabi in full Austrian dress. She was a fabulous guide and was very passionate about Salzburg. She loved the city and it was evident by her enthusiasm. Our walking tour included some of Salzburg's most historic sites including Mirabell Palace (beautiful gardens where Maria and the children sang and danced on the steps and around the fountain). We saw the birthplace of Mozart and the house he lived in for 8 years. He left Salzburg and moved to Vienna at ... read more

August 17-18, 2016 Salzburg is known as the birthplace of Mozart and setting for the film “The Sound of Music.” The hills are really alive in Salzburg. It has a population of only 150,000 (which includes 30,000 students) but receives 10,000,000 visitors a year. It is a beautiful city with the mountains all round and the river winding through it. The city is divided by the Salzach River, with medieval and baroque buildings of the pedestrian Altstadt (Old City) on its left bank, and 19th-century Neustadt (New City) on the right. The Festung Hohensalzburg, the city's fortress, was built in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard, who made it his residence. It was greatly expanded during the following centuries. It is one of the largest medieval castles in Europe. It sits atop a hill from where you can ... read more

Welcome back, dear reader. This entry and the one immediately following it is this week's DOUBLE FEATURE! Blog written by me, Jordo, and a special edition entry where Rindi compares Hotels to Hostels and the pros and cons of both! I think! I haven't read it yet! We are by no means an authority, as of yet, but we have stayed in our fare share of hostels by now. I'll let her get to the nuts and bolts of that, later. Also, a tip for opening links to the pictures below (so that you don't lose your place), either right click on the link and "Open in New Tab" or use your middle mouse button to click on the link and it will open in a new tab automatically! Today was the day we (well, at least I) had been waiting for. The Original Sound of Music Tour in Salzburg, which takes you to many of the set locations of the famous movie, and also gives you a history of the real Von Trapps and information about the movie. We woke in the original Von Trapp house early in the morning. Our tour started at 9:15, and although we had done the test-drive of getting there the night before, I was eager to be ready to make sure we had plenty of time. I wanted to check-out by 8 to give us time to walk to the bus stop and then remember our way to Mirabellplatz, where the tour started. Breakfast in Villa Trapp is only served from eight, so we had to forgo it ... read more

Probably not the going to be the most exciting read today, as the events that occurred today were not overly enthralling. Nonetheless, it was still an enjoyable day for our arrival and overnight stay in Salzburg. We woke early this morning - the first time for the whole trip we have needed to set an alarm. Our journey today was via train to the city of Salzburg - the birthplace of Mozart and the city which belongs to the Sound of Music. We went for an early breakfast at the hotel, and unlike yesterday, it was fairly quiet. Only a few other couples were about at about 7am. As this was only going to be an overnight stay our main luggage was able to stay in our hotel, and we each took a backpack with us ... read more
