A short visit in Salzburg When we were in southern Germany it struck us that our 9-Euro-Tickets actually allowed us to travel to Salzburg in Austria. Emma really wanted to go there because she had never visited that city. Ake had visited Salzburg once before. But that was 35 years ago so he barely remembered anything so he was also OK with going there. Here follows our story from the day we visited the city Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born in. Historical city centre Salzburg's Historical city centre is a UNESCO world heritage site. That means that there are many old well preserved buildings there and that it is a beautiful town. After having packed our little VW Golf to the max, we drove from Wil through parts of Austria and Slovenia to Hrvatska (Croatia). We were planning to stay at least 4 to 5 weeks in Croatia, establishing our Mediterranean base camp in Vodice, a town near Sibenik, in Central Dalmatia, courtesy of Ana and Tomislav and her families. More of that later...... But first we wanted to see some places in Austria and Slovenia and catch up with friends there. Austria is full of history and natural beauty, so we had to choose. We picked the topic Danube River, Salzburg and Salzkammergut, the lovely countryside South of Salzburg, famous for its mountains, lakes and small authentic villages. The Danube or Donau (in German) is Europe's second largest river (after the Volga) measuring 2'850km in length. Its ... read more

Hier au soir j'ai goûté ... read more

Today was the first day of my retirement and it felt pretty good ? We woke up to rain ? and the forecast was for it to rain all day - luckily it was just drizzle and stayed dry whilst we visited the massive castle overlooking Salzburg - the Fortress Hohensalzburg. Quick ride up the funicular, (via the oldest bakery in town for a snack! - couldn’t resist the amazing smell - their flour ground by a waterwheel! ) to the fortress - and what a fortress! Various Archbishops had added extensions to the original basic castle over the years - each outdoing the previous it seems, until the fortress you see today dominating the city from a great height. The audio guide was helpful to understand how the castle developed with each Archbishop - seemed ... read more

We decided to go for a walking tour this morning - 10 o’clock at Mirabell Palace, main entrance - easy? should have been, but tourist maps are tricky to read and we arrived too late !? To be honest we weren’t sorry as we later saw so many ‘walking tours / groups’ and they looked super dull. Anyway, having missed out on the organised tour, we reset with a coffee and strudel and set to organising our own tour. Using the tourist map and internet site Bigboytravel.com (?) we were off! Firstly the Mirabelle Palace gardens ( SofM Doh-Ray-me film site) - lovely flowers but probably we were expecting a more manicured set of gardens - too many weeds for our liking!! Then to Mozarts house ( and closeby where physicist Doppler lived), and across the ... read more

I enjoy a fabulous breakfast in this lovely, calm and luxurious B&B. The owners provide excellent service whilst being very laid back. I explain that I am here to explore Salzburg in just a few hours and they offer to lend me a bike. Although I enjoy cycling, I politely decline as I want to bob in and out of lots of places and having a bike would be a complication. I actually do know my way around Salzburg reasonably well unlike the other cities that I have visited on this trip. However I have never stayed here. I used to come here each week from Seefeld during the summer months, and always with a group of 30-50 people. So I am looking forward to a few hours here alone to do some exploring. Our second day is Salzburg started out with us leaving Salzburg and traveling to Germany to the Berchtesgaden region for a visit to Hitler's Eagle's Nest. It was a beautiful sunny day to journey into the Bavarian Alps and climb to a mountain top. On the way we passed several locations where parts of the Sound of Music were filmed, including the bridge the children danced across singing and the home where the outside scenes. In the photo you can see the wall alongside which Maria sang the song "I Have Confidence In Me." Upon reaching Eagle's Nest we walked through a tunnel to reach the elevator to the top. After a few minutes for our guide to talk about the building we had time to explore the mountain on which Eagle's Nest is perched. A ... read more

Today was a travel day as we boarded our bus to head west to Salzburg. We started out traveling to Krems to board a riverboat to travel along part of the Danube River. We passed grape vineyards in Wachau Valley and passed the town of Durnstein where high on the hill is Durnstein Castle the place where Richard the Lionhearted was held captive. We disembarked at Weissenkirchen joining our bus driver once again to continue our journey. Just outside of Salzburg we stopped at Mondsee to visit the church where the wedding scene in the Sound of Music was filmed. The interior of St. Michael's Church is quite beautiful. We also got to see the beautiful Lake Mondsee. After arriving at Salzburg, we got settled in our room and then proceeded on a walking tour of ... read more
