We woke today to a very cold and foggy morning. It reminded me of a morning in Canberra - some fog and you need to rug up on your way to work or school. In Austria, however, that weather was all day. We were even able to stare directly into the sun without it hurting our eyes. After breakfast we went into the hotel lobby to wait our ride to the bus, where our tour would begin. Months ago we booked an all day tour to the Danube Valley (located in the north-east of Lower Austria). Tours run throughout the year, but they change it up a bit in winter, compared to the summer months. The starting point was actually only about a ten minute walk from our hotel, but considering we had already organised to ... read more

This morning we were docked in Melk, Austria. I took the optional tour to Melk Abby, a 900 year old Baroque abbey. It's situated on a steep cliff and began as a Roman border post. Later in the tenth-century, it served as a fortress. It became a Benedictine Monastery in 1089. It currently has 900 students but none of them are boarded any more since modern transportation became available. There's a story that one of the Abbot's, centuries ago, was extremely frugal and wanted all extravagance to go to people who could actually and practically use it. He also invented a re-useable coffin. Once the person was dropped in the grave, the bottom dropped out and the rest of the coffin was pulled up and used for someone else. That idea didn't last for very long, ... read more

Day 6 – Melk Abbey and cruise through the Danube’s Wachau Valley Today we docked and were transported by coach up to the Benedictine Melk Abbey where we were given a guided tour. It is the largest in Austria and was constructed in the early 1700s. I used the GoPro to video the tour and I'm not sure if I'll be able to post that somewhere. But that'd be like watching someone else's family vacation home movies or slide show huh!? Could be boring if you weren't part of it! “Melk’s restored abbey, beaming proudly over the Danube Valley, is one of Europe’s great sights. Established as a fortified Benedictine abbey in the 11th century, it was later destroyed by fire (what you see today is 18th- century Baroque). Architect Jakob Prandtauer made the building one ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296The day after we sailed from Vienna, we entered the Wachau valley, a very picturesque stretch of the Danube lined by vineyards and small villages with churches and monasteries. Very relaxing to sit on the sun deck, down a Bavarian beer and watch the world go by.The ship moored up at the town of Melk at which a monastery was founded 900 years ago. Several times the building was destroyed by fires and war but was rebuilt and is now mostly an 18th century building with a beautiful baroque church. It also has a stunning very old library and a beautiful marble hall. Outside there are gardens and courtyards and the old town is a short walk down between the monastery and the river. Once more we have time to sit in the sun ... read more

It was worth the wait. After hunkering down the night before dodging driving rain, lightening storms, snow and the odd flying lawn chair; this morning we woke up to a calm serene blanket of snow. We waited until noon for most of the snow to melt off and had one of our best days riding through the Alps! Up and down mountain roads , through quaint villages and lush meadows I couldn't stop smiling.... read more

When you're embarking on 580 km to your destination in a bus, I guess you'd think the weather wouldn't matter much. However, this part of our journey involved some of the most beautiful scenery of any of our days of travel on this tour, so it was a shame that we had rain for most of the day. Passing from Budapest to well into Austria, it was pretty much flat farmland and reading a book helped to while away the first few hours. We then entered Austria's Wachau Valley, picture-postcard villages and vineyards along a lovely stretch of the Danube, edged along one side by mountains. Even in the rain, in this area you could see why the Danube is referred to as "blue". At lunchtime, we stopped at Melk Abbey, a Benedictine abbey listed as ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296First stop for the day was to visit Melk Abbey. We had a personal guided tour of the Abbey in English, being the only English speaking tourists at that time. The guide was very knowledgeable. After morning tea in Melk, we drove towards Krems alongside the River Danube, through the Wachau Valley. We stopped off at Burg Aggstein, a castle built in the early part of the 12th century. The castle was built by the Kuenringer family by Manegold III Aggsbach Getbeen. Its notoriety was due to the "robber barons" of Burg Aggstein who exacted tolls from passing ships and imprisoned their rivals for ransom and tied them to a rock ledge, all the time threatening to kill them by throwing them into the gorge. The castle was built about 91 metres above the river ... read more

Geo: 48.2271, 15.3296We are staying in the small town of Emmersdorf, which is directly opposite the town of Melk, which has the world famous Melk Abbey as it's key attraction. From our balcony, we have a clear view of the Abbey. Melk Abbey financed it's complete renovation in 1997 through sale of it's original Gutenburg Bible to Harvard University.Last night we drove to a small Austrian town in the hills and had authentic Austrian cuisine. We were literally the only people in the restaurant who could speak any English. Today we caught the Schiff (Ship) from Emmersdorf to Krems down the Danube River, a distance of some forty kilometres down the Wachau Valley. The Wachau is the section of the river where all of the River Cruise scenes of lofty disused castles are taken. We passed ... read more

Woke up in Melk for the tour of the Abbey. Stunning Baroque architecture, golden artifacts, art works and cathedral were we listened to the beautiful original organ being played. I always feel sorry for the relics of the saints dressed up in elaborate costumes laying about in glass cases trying to stay looking good for the rest of eternity. Afterwards we walked back through the lovely little village and through the woods to the boat where the crew had the BBQ fired up. After lunch the Tour de Wachu paleton (21) helmeted up for their 32km bike road through this georgeous valley another UNESCO site rivaled only by the Rhine Valley. My choice was to stay on board for the commentary and the tasting of the wine grown in this region called grulier (green) veltliner. (very ... read more
