Monday July 23 – When I went to sleep last night it started to rain. When I left this morning, it was raining a little. Maybe the wrong day for a beach day? I woke up 10 minutes before my 5:30 alarm. Brenton’s ad for the airbnb said it included breakfast, which is unusual. I asked him to confirm yesterday and he said that if I want breakfast, they can make it. He never said anything again, only that we’d meet to leave today at 6:45, so I figured he forgot. I ate a yogurt and granola, and then his wife came over to ask me if I wanted some breakfast. I thought she said she’d bring me the stuff to cook, but she brought me a plate with toast, a boiled egg and some fried plantain.
Brenton and I left around 6:40 and we were at the ferry by 7:15. It didn’t leave until 8:00, but I didn’t mind waiting. They allowed us to get on the boat at 7:30, so it was easy. It was a car ferry, and I sat up on the top deck, out of the sun. It stopped raining before we got to the
ferry, but it was still cloudy. The ferry took an hour to get to Bequia (pronounced Beckway) and my first stop was the tourism office. I haven’t seen any other tourism offices on this trip. The woman gave me a map but wasn’t forthcoming with information. I knew where I wanted to go but decided to walk through the small village of Port Elizabeth first. At the end of town, I saw a sign saying fort, and looked on my map. It seemed quite close, so I decided to walk up along the main road. I’m glad I did. It was a nice walk, a bit steep in parts, but with a good view at the fort. A small group pulled up when I arrived at the Fort, and I took a couple of pictures, then followed a little path. It looked like it was heading to a small lookout, but it kept going and was going towards the water. Soon I realized that it was going to go back to town, or somewhere close. It was kind of fun, finding a “secret” path. I even saw a snake. I think. It ended at the sea and in a small
neighborhood. I saw a guy so I asked him if I could walk to the main road and he pointed out the way. I had to climb steeply back uphill just to go downhill again towards the town, but it was still good.
My next stop was my official destination – the beach. I was walking to Princess Margaret beach, and there is a concrete path that they’ve built along the water to get there. The beach wasn’t marked, but I figured it was the first large one I’d seen. It wasn’t quite what I thought it would be, but it was nice. I guess I had Anguilla beaches in mind, but this was a long narrow beach facing out to the bay. I walked to the far end, looking for a place to stay, and then saw another path. I figured it led to Lower Bay, the other beach I was interested in. It did, via a small walk on the main road. There was one woman swimming and no one else around when I showed up, and there was a perfect enormous shade tree, so I stayed. There were actually many trees along the beach, but they
were manchineel trees, and there were also signs warning that the fruits are poisonous and the leaves can be irritating. I chose a different tree to lay under.
I stayed there from 11:00 until 3:15pm. It started quite cloudy, with a small sun shower at one point. But by the end of the day it was quite nice. I only swam once, and felt too cold to stay in long. So weird to think I was cold.
I walked back to the ferry and arrived a little early. I thought there was one at 4pm and I knew there was one at 4:30pm. The 4pm boat was imaginary, so I had about 45 minutes to wait. But, like this morning, they let us on 30 minutes early. I read most of the way, and finished my book. Now I’m onto the next.
Brenton picked me up along with a friend of his in a big police van. He had something to do, so the friend dropped him off and drove me home. I felt like I should have gotten the bus, but he was coming here to repair something. Sadly, not my aircon, which is still broken.
It is so hot in here, and I’m not opening the windows because there are no screens, and I can’t sleep with mosquitos hunting me all night. The repair cop had the door open for a while and a couple got in. I killed one but the other is still lurking.
I cooked dinner, watched an episode of Outlander, battled mosquitos, went through photos, wrote and showered. The usual routine.
