I caught my first turtle today!! It’s been months since our last blog, so I guess I should back up a little bit. My mom came down to visit after Christmas and we had a wonderful time with her, showing her around and spending time together. And with her came our new computer, so we should be able to do a better job keeping up the website now. We hope that everyone had a nice Christmas and New Years! Back in late November/early December we began to get involved with the Saint Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (SKSTMN). In December a Kittitian (a person from St. Kitts) who is studying for his master’s degree in Barbados returned for about 3 weeks to continue gathering data for his research project. Members of the SKSTMN joined in to ... read more

So...our laptop's motherboard is done for. For those of you not too familiar with computers, that would be an important and extremely expensive component. So basically, we probably aren't going to be emailing or updating the website much for quite a while, but we'll do our best to check email whenever we can and hopefully get to update the blog at some point too. ... read more

September 21, 2006—St. Kitts, West Indies (So...apparently I added the photos to the wrong blog entry...and I can't get them moved to this one. Since they took me about 2 hours to upload, I am just going to leave them there. So if you want to see the new photos that should go with this text, just look at the last entry in full text and scroll all the way to the bottom.) Well, we’ve been here in St. Kitts for about a month now, and are finally getting to update the website. It’s hard to fill in the past month, especially when we are largely limited to rather flowery statements (since our website is not password protected and therefore could potentially be viewed by people who could take offense to comments, even if not intended ... read more

Friday 10 February: Nevis Today was our last full day in St Kitts so we decided to make a second trip to Nevis. It is renowned for its walking trails and we reckoned that it would be worth trying out some of the paths on offer at the Golden Rock Plantation Inn. Walking down from Bird Rock to Basseterre felt a bit too hot, the wind dropped, there was full sun and we caught a minibus for the last half mile. Despite this, we still were going for this hike into the rainforest. We got a bus from Charlestown which took us just outside the Golden Rock Plantation Inn. The Inn produces leaflet guides for a couple of hikes in the forest. We opted for going towards the source of Nevis’ water, following the pipe up ... read more

6 February Monday: Nevis We got the ferry from Basseterre to Nevis. Taking the bikes meant that we could see a fair bit of the island. Nevis is much greener than St.Kitts, with more of its area forested. It is a smaller island and has a smaller population. Consequently it has a more intimate feel than St. Kitts. Strangley though, the traffic seems worse. We started off in Charlestown and headed towards Bath where warm springs are still used. Though the maps looked better that the St. Kitts maps, they were still fairly misleading. It was a hot climb out of Charlestown and after threading our way down a pretty lane to a place called Fig Tree, we asked for directions to the Botanical Gardens and found ourselves confronted by a bloody big hill. Kasia went ... read more

4 February Saturday Early this morning it was wet, so our planned trip to Nevis was postponed. We decided to stay in St. Kitts and explore the Atlantic coast. The air outside soon warmed up, and we dropped off the bikes at the bike shop. Firstly we visited the St. Kitts museum which has a very good description of the islands’s history. Initially, the Carib chief of St Kitts had welcomed the British, but had apparently got nervous once the incomers totalled 80. The British and French settlers had heard of a plan to drive them off the islands and went on a bloody massacre of just about all the native inhabitants at Bloody Point. Though it didn’t stop a certain Sir Thomas Warner, leader of the settlers, having a son by one of the native ... read more

Wednesday 01 February Today we set out to explore the interior of the island, and cycled down to Basseterre, and left the bikes at the shop (as per under instruction, otherwise the bikes go walkies). Next job was to catch a bus from the small bus station by the waterfront. After getting a bit scorched yesterday, a steamy walk in the rainforest seemed like a good option. We found lots of buses, and needed to ask for the right one. Buses aren’t numbered - they either go up the Atlantic side of the island or the Caribbean. Buses are cheap: it was $EC2.50 for the fare, about 55p. {for reference 1 $EC = 22p, and the rate is 2.68 $EC = 1 $US } We got off at Old Road, the stop* for Romney Manor, ... read more

Nine hours flying, that’s the first long haul flight we have done, though it’s better than 36 hours on a bus between Leeds and Kraków, Poland. It doesn’t help when a couple decide to bring their baby for a Caribbean holiday - not much fun for the baby, and sure as hell not much fun for fellow passengers. Intrigued by a cheapy deal on the net, we headed out down to the Caribbean once we found that there was a lot of potential for exploring around , a chance to do some snorkelling in a warm sea, and our first venture into tropical climes. Sitting on our patio, sheltering from the strong Caribbean sun (at 17 degrees North of the Equator, it’s bloody strong for a northerner like me) a shower suddenly passed; under the bright ... read more
