Matt and Lauren - Matt and Lauren Brock

Matt and Lauren Brock He everybody! We are heading off on a 27-month stint with Peace Corps. We know we're going to the Eastern Caribbean, but we're still not sure which island :) We're also not entirely sure how often we will have internet access and be able to keep this site updated, but we will do our best!

"I'm SO white!"
"I'm SO white!"
Matt in the pool last week during special olympics swimming lessons-- he saw this picture and the first thing he said?...."I'm so white!" =) We may live on a hot and sunny island, but you'd never be a... [more]
Thursday, January 17, 2008 The things kids tell you during reading assessments.... Yesterday I was finally able to begin reading assessments with all of the 1st and 2nd grade students at the primary school where I work part time. I’m really curious to see how the results come out overall, and also excited to start the reading program with those who need the most help. I had a couple of interesting conversations in the process though…. Some of the kids came in pretty nervous or really quiet(we pulled them out of class one at a time), so I would talk to [View Full Entry]

Hello from Dominica! We had our Peace Corps mid-service training here (which we missed the first half of!), and are now spending a week here hiking, snorkeling, and visiting friends….and so far it’s been wonderful! Our trip here was a bit of an adventure. We were supposed to fly from St. Kitts, through Antigua with a short layover, and on to Dominica. After 2 hours in the St. Kitts airport we were informed that the air traffic controllers in Antigua had gone on strike…so all travel through there was grounded (And the airline we were traveling with has all their mechanics, [View Full Entry]

Throwing sand!

After stopping by the local Chinese restaurant to pick up dinner and buying several tomatoes from a vendor by the bus stop, I jump on one of the buses, pay the busman, and settle into a seat. You should understand the buses are not really buses at all, but full size vans painted brightly, constantly blaring the same overplayed song that has been popular for the last two months. I take a seat by the sliding door. Soon afterwards, I greet Ethel (who I have sat next to on the bus several times before) and help her to her seat [View Full Entry]

The sign!
The sign!
If this sign weren't here you'd never know it was a trail...you'd see only a steep ditch that carries rain run-off. But thanks to the sign, one takes a second look and says "is that REALLY the trail??... [more]
I just told Matt that I had updated the blog and he said “did you put our pictures on?” So seeing as I have some time right now it’s the perfect opportunity to add some pictures of a great hike we took a couple of weeks ago to the top of the second highest peak on the island. I would strongly argue that it’s a much more rugged and difficult hike than the one with a higher elevation…I bet from the pictures you’ll be able to tell why! The trail for this pond/peak, the ‘d'os dane' pond trail, branches off from [View Full Entry]

CRICKET, GAME #2 (Netherlands vs. South Africa) Ahhhh(sigh of happiness at being able to sit down and relax!)….just got home from our second cricket match ever! There was a rain delay (it actually wasn’t currently raining, but they couldn’t play until the field was dry enough to pass a very official inspection) until noon, but once again we were out standing in the stands by 7am. Until the night before the first game it hadn't rained hard here for at least a month, then in rained nearly all day yesterday and into the night—I’m convinced that the Scotts brou [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! Once again it’s been a long time since we’ve updated the sight. We always talk about it, yet somehow all those great ideas infrequently turn into blog updates. CRICKET Right now the schools and also the program for adults with disabilities are closed for 2 weeks for an early ‘Easter Break.’ I realize it’s not yet Easter, but some of the first games of World Cup Cricket are being held here, which is a HUGE deal for an island of 36,000 (47,000 if you count sister island, Nevis). I’ve had a couple people back in the states mention differe [View Full Entry]

I caught my first turtle today!! It’s been months since our last blog, so I guess I should back up a little bit. My mom came down to visit after Christmas and we had a wonderful time with her, showing her around and spending time together. And with her came our new computer, so we should be able to do a better job keeping up the website now. We hope that everyone had a nice Christmas and New Years! Back in late November/early December we began to get involved with the Saint Kitts Sea Turtle Monitoring Network (SKSTMN). In December a [View Full Entry]

So...our laptop's motherboard is done for. For those of you not too familiar with computers, that would be an important and extremely expensive component. So basically, we probably aren't going to be emailing or updating the website much for quite a while, but we'll do our best to check email whenever we can and hopefully get to update the blog at some point too. September 21, 2006—St. Kitts, West Indies (So...apparently I added the photos to the wrong blog entry...and I can't get them moved to this one. Since they took me about 2 hours to upload, I am just going to leave them there. So if you want to see the new photos that should go with this text, just look at the last entry in full text and scroll all the way to the bottom.) Well, we’ve been here in St. Kitts for about a month now, and are finally getting to update the website. It’s hard to fill in the past month, [View Full Entry]
