"I am driving to the airport with my dad and brother. It might be a long drive.....We are in the bus to get to the airport. We have to take the bus because we cant park next to the airport....We are now in the airport. We have to check in and get a boarding pass....We are in the airplane now and it is very late. We are in the hostel waiting to get breakfast.....We saw the canal moving the water. It moved down and up. First the water moved down and then otheer side of the water up and then up and other side went down so the boat can move. We got some ice cream because it was really hot and we had some fish that was really good." Sofia Journal Entry October 24-25

It was time for another short trip to Central America. Daddy and I had so much fun taking Vitor to El Salvador for the weekend last Spring, that we decided to have hime come with us again. So, a Friday off of school for a "teachers planning day", cheap Spirit Airlines flights to Panama, and a Thursday that Daddy called a "learn about the

panama canal day" and we were off. Panama, here we come.

While the cheap flights to Central America make it easy, the flights often do not leave at the best time. This one was no exception as it left Fort Lauderdale airport after 11 pm. However, unlike our trip to El Salvador, this one left on time and we arrived in Panama City a little after 1 am. We got picked up at the airport and were taken to our hostal - Villa Vento Surf. I do not remember much of that night as I fell asleep at the airport, on the plane, in the taxi and shortly after arriving at the hostal.

The next day we took a taxi to the Panama Canal. Daddy had been to Panama on the way back from Brasil when he met my mommy in Rio, but did not have time to see the canal. So we took off for the Miraflores Locks which was right outside the city. It was really cool. I saw these gigantic boats, pass through these small canals and learned how the canal raised the boats to a higher level It was really cool.

We went and saw a 3D movie which showed the history of the canal and how they worked. We also went to the museum which was my favorite part. I had so much fun there. I loved the command center and the control center and had so much fun as it was really hands on. I also learned about the animals of Panama and was excited for our fishing trip the next day.

We then took a taxi back to the city and we were dropped off at the Mercado de Mariscos (the Fish Market). It was awesome. I had great ceviche and then fried whole corvina fish. Yummy!

We then walked to nearby Casco Viejo. It was a fun walk near the ocean. We had great ice cream for dessert and played in a square called Plaza de Francia. I had fun playing tag with Vitor. There was a lot of construction there. It was hot and time to go back to the hostal as I wanted to go swimming.

On the way back to the hostal, the taxi driver dropped us at a wine store that just so happened to be around the corner from our hostal. Daddy picked up some wine and some food for dinner and we walked to our hostal.

I had so much fun in the pool with daddy. Then we ate our dinner - bread, meat and cheese and played hangman. I had so much fun on the chalkboard at the hostal and we made lots travelers. We spent most of the time with Baptiste and Vanesse. They were a couple from France (paris) and Belgium. They played hangman with us also and had lots of fun. I hope we see them again sometime in France, Belgium or the USA.

It was time to go to bed early as there was fish to be caught the next day.......
