We will see all the highlit areas of the map today.
Itinerary! Watch out. And, bonus, not get lost because we have a copy of the map on the camera. It actually worked. I think I'm becoming a serious coffee addict. All these early mornings & free coffee. It does not bode well for limiting my coffee consumption. When we get back to the US & I have to pay big money for coffee, we are in trouble.
After Geoff finally woke up (about 2 hours after me...) we made George Bowls. Yum! I swear, sitting at this kitchen table is so entertaining. The people watching is unreal, just in our hostel. I love it.
We headed out into town with a picture of the map from our book, where I highlighted the things I wanted to see today. I can't help it, I've been up for hours & had ALOT of coffee... We visited the Convent & Iglesia of San Francisco that has been restored & turned into a museum, a couple other Iglesias & the Fortaleza La Polvora, a military fort built in the late 1700's. From the top of one of the lookout towers we could see the whole city & the Lago de Nicaragua. The best part of the day was the fact that it was Sunday & there wasn't anyone out & about. Everyone stays home &
closes up shop on Sundays. The streets were empty & picture taking was prime. It was great! And, it was roasty toasty hot so it was nice not to have as much traffic & people about.
On our walk home we stopped at a hair salon & Geoff got his chops trimmed. It was pretty funny. The girl at the salon laughed at our request. But, it was kind of necessary, Geoff's chops have taken on a life of their own. I forgot to take a picture, darnit, but she took off about an inch. Yikes! The trim cost a dollar. Awesome! The girl honestly chuckled to herself through the entire time he was sitting in the chair.
On the road again! We headed back to our hostel & had to shower away the daily grime. We then headed out to sit on the street & people watch in the shade. The touristy street was not as busy as the night before but still happening. We employed our ignore/don't make eye contact tactics to all the people selling things & the singing/dancing/mariachi groups. The second you look at them they take that as an invite to play music/talk
Convento y Iglesia San Francisco.
It was painted bright blue 15 years ago but has faded in the intense sun. to you/etc. It really works to ignore. It's great! I was employing my ignore tactic & staring at my book when a woman walked up & said "hola!" until Geoff responded with a genuinely happy hola back. It was a woman we had met in Honduras at Lago Yojoa traveling with her teenage daughters, from Montreal Canada. It's so funny to randomly run into people throughout travels. We had a little catchup session & they were on their way. We enjoyed our Tona Grande & delicious fish burger (really a grilled filet served on a bun, yum, & it had real pickles! Such a treat!! Geoff asked for more pickles, honestly can't remember the last time I had a pickle) until the mosquitos decided to come out in full force. Then we headed in.
We had planned to work on our blog in the hostel but ended up spending the evening talking with an older couple from NY. They were super fun to chat with. They travel 6 weeks every year & have for the past 35 years. They listed a handful of countries they haven't visited yet & that was it. Our inspiration!! They had all kinds of
travel stories & they were all very entertaining. They were also kind enough to share their delicious homemade pasta sauce & pasta & red wine with us! Love it! Thanks Pete & Linda! (We were just going to be lazy & eat ramen noodles). Pasta & wine is much much better.
The joys of hostel living. Never get too caught up in following your plans. There are always people around who want to chat or something comes up that is way more interesting than you had planned. It's quite the social life we are living & always an education.
Off to bed with full bellies & a bit of a wine buzz! 😉
