Following the hustle and bustle of Granada we decided to head out to Laguna de Apoyo which is a crater lake just outside to city. It's a beautiful spot to take a break for a couple days from the chaos of Managua or Granada. There isn't much in the way of transportation to get there. You could take a bus to Masaya and catch one of the two daily buses that head to the lake, or one of the couple shuttles/tours that go directly from Granada (there must be shuttles/tours from Managua but that wasn't the direction of our travel so we didn't look into it). We opted to take the afternoon shuttle out, which conveniently departed from our hostel, so we could do a little more running around in town.
When we arrived it was raining something furious so we got our room and then hung out in the covered restaurant forgoing wandering about in the rain. After dinner on our arrival we hit the hay.
The next day we decided to change rooms to a dorm in order to save a few cordobas. The weather had improved greatly and we could actually see the lake. It is
quite a site with being so small and surrounded by greenery. From where we were on the lake it looked like there were no other buildings anywhere around it. It is very undeveloped and even the couple places there are are not eyesores on the lake. The hostel we were at had a floating dock out in the water, kayaks, paddle boards, ping-pong and pool tables, a bocce ball court (?), a beach front bar, and a restaurant higher up the hill. Day trippers could come out and pay a fee to use the beach and all the water sports equipment, and run up tabs at the bar & restaurants; as guests sports equipment was free, and we were of cource encouraged to run a tab. We didn't swim too much since it does tend to be a lot of work, and significantly more in fresh water vs. salt. Dan tends to have enough trouble floating as is. It was rather windy every day too so we didn't make use of the kayaks, not relishing the thought of having to paddle against the wind after our workout on Ometepe.
On our second day here we ran into our homestay
sisters (?) who stayed with the same host family while we took Spanish lessons in San Pedro la Laguna in Guatemala. It was nice to run into them and swap more travel stories, hints, and suggestions; especially since we'd taken different routes and were still going to hit places the others had gone.
You could do a couple of hikes up to the crater lip, but we didn't. One day was much the same as the next at the lake: hang out at the restaurant or beach; swim out to the dock; hang out some more; visit with the other people staying here. We left the hostel property once and got ice cream, but like we said, not much around the lake except swimming.
