Barbecue Pics
From Left: Annie, Morgan, Shirley and Leighanne This weekend flew by so fast! It was kind of a whirlwind actually. The only notable thing that happened on Friday at school was that I held a birthday party for Donovan. It was a ton of fun and the kids loved it. I checked the birthday list to see how many were left before I decided to do anything for his. Luckily, I have missed many of the birthdays and there are only four or five until the end of the year, so I wont be buying a 25 cakes. Donovan absolutely loved his little party, cake and games. He hopefully liked my gift. I got him some Mickey Mouse pencils, sharpener and eraser. I thought it was a good idea since he is always asking me for a pencil. But sure enough, come this morning at school he asked me for a pencil. He apparently forgot his at home, as per usual. It seems to be a theme with all of the kids, except for the one that just eats his pencils. Gross and not exactly healthy but not too much I can do about it besides harass him not to whenever I see him doing it.
Friday
night, Katie and I just grabbed some movies from the video store down the street. We got Seven Pounds and The Women. Seven Pounds was incredible! I loved it. It was a nice relaxing way to spend a Friday night. I don't really like going on Friday nights, it's just too tiring after a long week at school. I like to give it my full attention on Saturdays.
After all of the planning and changing the arrangements for where we were all going, Saturday finally came along and we didn't end up too far from where we always are. Karen, the other first grade teacher, invited everyone over for a barbecue on Saturday. She came here with her husband because he was stationed here with the Army. Turns out they loved it so much, they set up shop here.
First off all, she lives up in the mountains and so she came to pick up everyone in town. I felt like I was trying to hit the border or something. There were 4 people in the front of her truck and then in the back, there were 15 of us! We were crammed in there sardines. I felt
every single bumps, and there were plenty of bumps during that ride. It was actually really cool, because I had such a great view while we were going up the mountain. The pain and confining conditions were certainly worth it.
Her house is immaculate. I can see why they decided to live here. I am sure it crosses everyone's mind at some point. They have this massive land with the most beautiful view. They grow coffee, pineapple and a ton of other things. They have four huge dogs that are still learning not to play with scorpions and frogs here because they are poisonous. They also have this animal, but I can't remember what it's name is. It sounds like Pickachu, but I realize it's not. her name is Mika and she is absolutely adorable. They eat the bananas here, so they are often killed on the spot when seen, which makes me feel really bad. They are adorable and doing what is normal for them. I understand that farmers want to keep their crops safe, but wiping out an entire species of animal seems a little drastic.
The barbecue was great! We got there at about 1
in the afternoon and the music was already going, the drinks were flowing and everyone was just chilling out. I learned something new here as well. Back home when we have a barebecue the food comes out about an hour or so after people get there, if not sooner. Then people eat and hang out. Not here. The food comes out about 2 hours after everyone gets there and then people eat and then they leave...right away. It was so strange to see that. The only people who left were the local teachers. Us foreign teachers stayed until about 9. It was a blast though. It was nice to be up int he mountains hanging out with friends. Hopefully we will get to go back up there soon.
After the barbecue, we all went home and got changed cause we all made an agreement to only take 15 minutes before we met up at the bar lol. We went to Sangrias and then to Villa Rial. It was alright, but I think because we had already been listening to great music and dancing the whole day it just didn't feel quite the same. We all made it home by
3 or 4. Which isn't too bad, I left before the lights came on. The first time ever for me here.
Surprisingly, I felt completely fine Saturday night. I think after 13 hours, I drank myself sober...along with everyone else. So luckily I felt good on Sunday. I didn't do much though, just lounged around in my pajamas all day. Watched some moves and ordered pizza with Leighanne and Katie. It's quite an experience ordering pizza here. It could take more than 20 minutes just to place an order. You have to try and explain where you live to them because there are no addresses here in Comayagua. Whenever I want to tell someone where I live I have to San Blas Pulperia Gabriella. Which is my neighbourhood and a store by my house. If they still don't get it, you can always tell them Casa de Gringas and they apparently know right away.
Poor Leighanne came over today before school to say that she wasn't going to school today. She asked if I felt fine because she thought maybe it was the food last night, but both Katie and I were fine. That poor girl has had
absolutely no luck since she has been here. The second day she got here she got sick and it lasted almost a week. She has been sick off and on since and today she went to the doctor and they said she has another parasite. She just got rid of the other one. Not only that, she also got attacked by bed bugs last week. It's not just her either. Katie has been sick off and on too and couldn't go to school on Friday. It's just so weird because I was positive I would be sick when I first got here, like most people traveling to a Foreign and Third World country. But nope. I have not been sick at all. Nothing. I haven't even been bitten by a bug yet. I guess I am just lucky, or I have some strange sort of immune system. Either that, or it will hit me all at once a few months from now. I just feel bad for everyone, I can't imagine it's very fun to be sick for nearly a month with parasites and bugs.
But I just gotta love Honduras - 1 for Janet 0 for Honduras and
it's bugs!
