Another meeting at the UN compound for the Food Program. This time, I knew exactly where the meeting was to be held, since I had done such a thorough reconnaissance mission last week! Can't fool me more than once (LOL). It was interesting to meet other NGO representatives that are managing camps and/or participating in food distribution programs. There was even a program that is distributing milk to children. It continues to amaze me how many people or organizations have been called by God to be here. Perhaps one can't do it all...but together, we are, indeed, moving mountains! At this point, we are being asked to identify and submit our long range priorities and goals. Instead of just focusing on present needs, we are beginning to look ahead to the future. Its a very positive ... read more

June 11 - evening There has been an SA cadet who came here in April for a 4 week tour. He had his passport stolen along with other valuables. This has become a nightmare for this young man. He went through a tortuous process to get a new passport, that took several weeks. Then another long process to get another visa (necessary for non-USA citizens for foreign travel). He was pointed out to me as someone in need upon my arrival 3 weeks ago. I have spent many hours over the last few weeks, talking with him, encouraging him on a daily basis. At long last today he finally had everything together and was able to purchase his airline ticket to go home! Tonight, at our team meeting, we went around the table, sharing the events ... read more

We do not go into the office on Saturdays, but work here at the Hotel. It becomes a good time to catch up on reports and other administrivia (to use Pastoral Director Dave Martin's phrase). Last night, more doctors and nurses arrived from southern Florida. This group of medical personnel fly from Miami to PaP and spend one weekend a month doing clinics for children here. I had an opportunity to speak with several of them and to bless them for their dedication in serving Haitian children. They are using their God-given skills in His service. Additionally, I had an opportunity to speak with Pastor Mark, who heads the Mission Ranch orphanage down by the port here in PaP. There are so many persons here that God has called to come along side a country in ... read more

June 10 - ESC experience After dinner, I was on my way back to the room, when I noticed a lady sitting in one of the chairs on our 'patio' in front of room 5 (Heather and I share room 6). I stopped to say hello and soon we were in deep conversation. She is a Pediatrician who had lived in Haiti 25 years ago for a time. She is here for a marathon medical clinic over Saturday and Sunday. She had toured around the area and was feeling the same feelings as I had felt on my trips. We talked for a long time. Then she told me about seeing a young mother with a 2 year old child, who had lost part of one leg in Jacmel. The mother was quite distraught and this ... read more

Henk sent me off to another meeting this morning. This was a combined NGO seminar on Anti-Kidnapping Self Protection Measures. If you will recall, prisons were destroyed in the earthquake, releasing prisoners back into the population. There have been incidences of gang warfare as these prisoners 'jockey' for positions. There have been hightened concerns that NGO personnel may become targets for quick-turn kidnappings for ransom. The seminar was very well done, led by a UN officer from Spain (some experience in this type of crime) and a UN officer from Columbia (LOTS of experience!) The seminar was very interesting and, of course, mostly common sense suggestions. NGOs have alreay been instructed to set curfews and, if traveling at night, to go in large groups. The SA sticks strictly to all security guidelines. Everyone continues to dote ... read more

June 9 - ESC Experience This afternoon after returning to the hotel from DHQ, we were told of two young girls who had arrived at the hotel in tears. After further investigation, we discovered they were to be a part of a group coming here to do ‘good works’ in Haiti. Apparently, when they arrived, no other group members were at the airport. A call back to them revealed that the other members had decided not to come after all. They were stranded! They hired a truck to bring them to the hotel and the driver ‘graciously’ offered to take them out to where other ‘international organizations’ were doing work. However, his truck needed some work and he wanted them to pay by charging $1,500 to their credit card. So, first there was a ‘calming process’; ... read more

Apparently Henk is intent on giving me a broad range of experiences here in Haiti. He asked me to attend a meeting on Recovery for Haiti at the Ministry de Planification' (say that with a French accent please). Since we were uncertain if the meeting would be in French or English, I went with an interpreter. We found the government office easily, passed through security, found the conference room and waited. Others came for the meeting and we had interesting conversations with a group from South Korea, a lady from Brazil, and also a man representing an Islamic humanitarian group. At 20 minutes past the appointed meeting time (even in Haitian time), we decided we needed to find someone to question about the meeting. The Brazilian lady left and came back about 5 minutes later with ... read more

In his ongoing quest to give me multiple experiences here in PaP, Henk assigned me to attend two afternoon meetings at the UN compound next to the airport; one was an NGO security briefing and the second was a Humanitarian Forum. After the morning's experience, I was hopeful I might actually be able to accomplish something productive. The UN compound is very large, housing 5 battalions of troops from various countries. This force is known as Minustah here in Haiti. The compound is walled, with guarded watch towers, and guarded gates. There was a line waiting to go through the security blockhouse, which I joined. Soon, a Haitian gentlemen came down the line and asked Salvation Army? (of course, I'm in my SA shirt, cap and have my SA ID around my neck) I said yes...and ... read more

Wednesday June 9 Apparently, Henk is intent on giving me all kinds of new experiences. Today, I was assigned to attend two meetings at the UN Logistics Base. The UN base is built next to the airport and is built almost entirely of large 'containers' and quonsot huts. The base is walled, with watch towers and is heavily guarded. Lots of vehicles, lots of firepower. I understand there is 5 battalions there. Most NGO meetings are held here for security reasons. I attended a Security/NGO meeting first; then a Humanitarium Forum. Most of the complaints at the Forum are about the difficulties and long delays in releasing shipping containers from the customs at the port. All organizations are experiencing the same problems we (the Salvation Army) are strugglling with. We have a new joke - there ... read more
