Taken from the Posada
The last four days have flown by with all sorts of events. We arrived at Posada Santiago after a shuttle ride from Chichicastenango along the Pan American Highway (which I have always wanted to see) and then negotiating a boat across the Lake from the hub of Panajachel to the pier at the posada - quite an evolution with our cases!
It was New Years Eve and preparations were feverishly underway. It was the owner's birthday and he had invited all the guests to celebrate with him and lots of local friends. Another gathering of people from all over the world with stories to tell - great! The dinner was 7 courses , each with a different wine. Live music and sporadic dancing, wonderfully relaxed and fun. A boat was booked to take us all out on the lake to see the fireworks all round from the villages along the edge. One to remember.
The next day seemed to be a continuation of the festivities but starting late. We had bright blue margaritas at 4pm and lots of chat. Local expats were there again and they have such a variety of reasons for moving here. Its a whole world in itself

Home for four nights
and very friendly.
We have perfected the art of doing not a lot since. Except for the odd foray into the local village, Santiago, and also a canoe out on the lake, we have just enjoyed being here. The Kindle has got a workout.
Today we head back to Antigua to join our group and travel through Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica in the next three weeks. It may not be so easy to blog for this time. Hasta luego!

Did you see the memorial (inside the church in Santiago) to the US missionary priest killed by the army in 1981, as the civil war was raging?

Its all so recent!
Hi Jim, Yes we saw the memorial - very humbling. We also 'stumbled' upon the site of the massacre of the families who were looking for their 'disappeareds', just beyond our Posada Santiago. There were small individual named marble columns. So sad.
