I’m writing this on an almost deserted beach on the pacific coast close to the Nicaraguan border. We are in El Esteron just east of Playa El Euco. The beach spans several kilometres east to west and at low tide it can spread a further kilometre out to the ocean, there are few amenities here, only a few small tiendas selling the basics, a couple of restaurants and occasionally a fruit or bread seller comes along on his bike. It is really quite blissful hearing nothing but the tide and the birds in the palms. I’ll admit it has not been like this every day, the weekend was much busier with Sunday in particular attracting many local visitors but still most of the beach remains unspoiled. Getting here from San Salvador was straightforward enough but not ... read more

Yesterday the ground was alive, grass glowed, the fish gave me a pedicure and the tides paced the day. living in El Salvador My husband´s 42nd birthday was a good excuse to take a short trip. So we packed up an overnight bag and headed out with our 5-year-old daughter and her little dog Freddy to the Bahia de Jiquilisco. The Bahia de Jiquilisco is located in the southwest in the department of Usulutan in south-eastern El Salvador. The drive time would have been about an hour an a half from San Salvador, but with traffic jams getting out of the city, and the cattle jams as we got closer to the bay it was quite a bit longer. Entering the region we found the air was thick, heavy, and hot. After crossing bridges over ... read more

Volcano Trail Day 6: July 30, 2009 Playa Cuco, El Salvador After driving through most of El Salvador and passing some awesome volcanoes, we arrived in the small beach town of Playa Cuco. Lonely Planet, says that the beaches in this area are not worth visiting. Well, I hope they keep writing this, because it is SO worth coming here. You have the entire beach to yourself, aside from a few locals pushing their fishing boats out and the vulture type birds eating fish. The water is warm and clean, and the waves are good enough for beginner surfers. Sun shines all day, with a small shower in the late afternoon. Paradise found! Shhh, don't tell Lonely Planet! Playa Cuco was the perfect place to take it easy after a day of food poisoning. The outside ... read more

Tim Version: * Bussed to San Miguel with an overnighter in San Salvador, stayed first night in a prostitute hotel. * Moved 2 more times to different hotels, drank and watched the party start to crank for days, then slept through the big finale! The version that doesn´t regret but still can´t believe we slept through the best part: Leaving Tacuba, we headed back to San Salvador hoping to make the trip in a single day, but not in that much of a rush we arrived in San Salvador a bit late to make it to San Miguel, so headed instead for food and accomodation. When you really like a place, and really like who you´re traveling with, life takes on a much less rushed happier pace. Everyone we asked to San Miguel bus times gave ... read more

Tim version: * Crossed from Leon out of Nicaragua through Gualaupe, through Honduras, to San Miguel for the night... unfortunately ripped off a little in Honduras. * Crossed further to San Salvador to replace my dead music player and pick up some other stuff... El Salvador and its people, amazing! The version where I feel like writing in Spanglish as that is the only way I seem to be able to speak now!: So, time to leave Nicaragua! This country rocks, and there is so much to do especially the more off the beaten track you wish to go. Its amazing what you can get up to when safety and often legality is dismissed! You just need to use your head, because no matter how stupid something may be, if you want to do it, there ... read more

I arrived in San Miguel yesterday. This is the third largest city in El Salvador and the eastern hub for the country. Its distinguishing feature is the active volcano it has towering over it, which last erupted in 1976. At only 50km and most it downhill, this was by far the easiest ride so far, but one of the most dangerous, as I didn´t have a good shoulder for the last 20km into San Miguel, so I had to tough it out on the two lane highway with all the buses and trucks. Some of them seemed to come so close... Not much new here other than a big fiesta they were having tonight. It was a 40th anniversary for something, but I couldn´t figure out for what. Anyways, it was quite the festive mood with ... read more
A typical bus in El Salvador. The majority of buses in Central America are refurbished school buses from the US.

The wear and tear on the old downtown of San Miguel is evident everywhere.
