Background: Explored and claimed by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492, the island of Hispaniola became a springboard for Spanish conquest of the Caribbean and the American mainland. In 1697, Spain recognized French dominion over the western third of the island, which in 1804 became Haiti. The remainder of the island, by then known as Santo Domingo, sought to gain its own independence in 1821, but was conquered and ruled by the Haitians for 22 years; it finally attained independence as the Dominican Republic in 1844. In 1861, the Dominicans voluntarily returned to the Spanish Empire, but two years later they launched a war that restored independence in 1865. A legacy of unsettled, mostly non-representative, rule for much of its subsequent history was brought to an end in 1966 when Joaquin BALAGUER became president. He maintained a tight grip on power for most of the next 30 years when international reaction to flawed elections forced him to curtail his term in 1996. Since then, regular competitive elections have been held in which opposition candidates have won the presidency. The Dominican economy has had one of the fastest growth rates in the hemisphere over the past decade.

Ok....so what did we do today? We slept in ´til 9 and meandered down to the Hibiscus restaurant for a very yummy breakfast...they had fried bananas with onions--not sure about that! Then we checked out the gift shops on the beach--yikes! Waaay expensive...we´ll stick with the local´s prices. Hey, forgot to tell you about a spanish missionary that I met yesterday! She gave me a track in spanish and we tried to talk about the Lord, but the language barrier got in the way. At the end of our conversation she said, ¨I see you are from far away, but I [View Full Entry]

I went snorkeling in the open ocean!!!! AAAAAND....I ATE LOBSTER and liked it!! Woohoo! Our day started early because we needed to get to the harbor. When we got to the harbor, we were met with cold drinks and smiling happy faces with a backdrop of the blue, open ocean. We took a catamaran ride out to the coral reefs, and they handed out snorkels. I looked at Chris like, ¨I´m not doing this.¨ Then they said,¨Experienced snorkelers over here and beginners over here...¨ Needless to say, I didn´t hear that and got in the experienced line and Chris was psyched. Ok...so while flying here we flew over The Bahamas!! The ocean is so blue it looks like someone poured that toilet cleaner stuff in it! When we landed at the airport it was interesting...there are NO walls on anything; not the airport, the resort, ANYTHING. There are only thatched, hut-style roofs and no walls. After we fixed our room fiasco, we walked along the beach in the dark...so beautiful and dreamy. Prosource arranged a fancy dinner right on Gabi Beach. -sigh- it was so amazingly beautiful. We met some cool people and had a yummy dinner. They had cream puffs in [View Full Entry]

ok, so i'm so sorry I haven't writen more, but life, the tropics and well, everything caught up with me. So here i go, my explanation makes as ood a recount of the story as i could otherwise. Chapter 1 the Dominican stereotipe The lights went, the computer died, the elecrical sistem showed it's flaws once again and "se fue la luz""the light went" became the most used sentense in the household. the computers just generally have issues, ether it's the internet, or the electric, or a virus or about ten thousand other things, and our computer geek when i fail [View Full Entry]

[View Full Entry]
