"On the first day we went on a plane to go to the Dominican Republic. It was a long flight. But then, the ride to get to the apartment was longer. When we were in the car it was such a long ride that I even counted the cars that passed by. I go all the way to 509. Whoa. Then when we got to the apartment I saw my friends - Luna, Tati, and Le-Le. We had bunk beds woo-hoo, I was on the top bunk. We mostly just played on the ipad that night. The next day we went to the beach. The salt hurt my eyes and throat. But then we went to the Rio Frio and it was cold but I liked it because I like being cold. It was not salt water so it was relaxing. We jumped off a palm tree but not on the leaf part. (It is hard to explain.) Then I ate fish. But when we were waiting we out of the restaurant back to the beach but did not go in the water. We just played in the sand. It was fun. Then the fish came and it was delicious. Jumping with Tatiana
Rio Frio, Playa Rincon I had the one with no sauce because the other one that my dad ate had coconut sauce, and I do not like coconut sauce.
Then we went back to the hotel and it was kind of night time but we went to the pool. It was fun because we chased each other around the pool just like tag. Then my friends and I played in the room." - Sofia ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Daddy's Comments:
Sofia and I were really excited about this trip. This was the first time travelling outside the country with some local friends. It was a long weekend in the Dominican Republic with the Cardoso and Karshis families. Sofia was really excited to be going on the plane with Luna, Iliana, and Tatiana, and I was glad that she was not too bummed when I noticed a couple weeks prior to departure that not only were we not on the same flights.....but not travelling the same day. Oops. Not sure how that happened, but the other 2 families left on Thursday and we left on Friday. Sofia had off from school on Friday and Monday, so with the DR only
a little more than 2 hours away, it was a great long weekend trip.
I had been to the Dominican Republic more than 10 years ago doing some medical work during residency, so this was the first time going there for vacation. We drove to the Ft. Lauderdale airport, our Spirit flight was only about 1 hour late, and we arrived in Santa Domingo in the late afternoon. We had no luggage to collect as we packed everything in 2 small backpacks, including Suzy (American Girl Doll) and her travel "necessities", so it was a quick stop at duty free for some wine, and we were met by Chalrie our driver for the weekend. All arranged by Carmen through her friend Netty and Tania whose vacation apartment we were staying at. While I love the planning associated with travel, it was nice for someone else to do it for a change.
It was a 2.5 hour drive to Samana and Sofia decided to count every car we passed. I am glad that kept her entertained. We arrived to the apt and it was great. While I could not tell at night, it was up on a hill overlooking
the bay. Absolutely stunning view. It was so great to see Roy, Rossana, Sean and Carmen. We had a great meal cooked by Maria. Great meal, great wine, and had a blast. Kids did great and the adults stayed up drinking some kind of rum concoction.....
The next morning we set out for Playa Rincon. It was about an hour drive and while it rained on the way, the weather was beautiful when we arrived. Soifia (and I) had som much fun body surfing in the waves and getting thrown by me and Sean, but my favorite part was playing in Rio Frio. It was a bit cold but not too bad, and Sofia loved jumping off the palm tree base into the river.
We then ate a late lunch down the other side of the beach. We had some delicious parrot fish fried and in a coconut sauce. We then rode back to the apartment, and after a dip in the pool, back to the apt for dinner, kids playing, and more wine and rum drinks for the parents......
