Central America Caribbean » Curaçao December 30th 2012

Day 436 Thursday 20th December Up at the crack of dawn grabbed the laundry finished packing and asked reception to call a taxi and we were soon driving to the airport. The other areas of Georgetown do look better but it is just residential and factories nothing of interest to tourists. We had some spare time at the airport so we used up our Guyanese money as we have heard no other countries will except it (wonder why?) and there is no Cambio in the airport to exchange to other currencies. Our flight was at 9.15 and at 8.45am we were worried the departure screen still did not show us boarding or a gate number, note there are only 3 gates so you can see them all from the seating area. Curacao Met Bill and Diana at the gangway and walked to the Avis office to pick up our car. Soon we were on our way. The roads were quite good and the signage excellent. Once we got off the main roads the pot holes got worse. We found a flock of flamingos and I stopped so I could take a picture. Caution, watch where you are stepping, always!! I managed to step on a red anthill feasting on goat dodo. They were not happy and soon I wasn’t either. But I got my pictures. Today’s plan was beach hopping and we were soon at Playa Marie and quickly picked out our spot in the shade. Bill was first in the clear calm water. The sandy bottom was littered with pieces of coral. This was not the ... read more

After a day at sea, we reached our first destination on our 7 day cruise on Royal Caribbean's Serenade of the Seas. We didn't book an excursion so we set out to explore the city. Like nearby Aruba (which we'd see the next day), Curacao is a Dutch country, but we heard mostly Spanish and English due to tourism. Near to the cruise port, there is a fort that has been turned into a shopping area. Like all destinations, prices are incredible. We were thankful that Jason found a cheap pair of flip flops in Puerto Rico, otherwise he would have had to pay upwards of $30-50 for 'designer' flipflops at the ports of call! We crossed the Queen Charlotte floating pedestrian bridge and wandered around the city. The forecast called for a 30% chance of ... read more

Bon dia everyone, It has been a while and a lot happened! Last days of January/first days of February - Panama On a Thursday evening, just a few hours before I had to board the bus to Panama City I got an injury at my ankle. I was playing volleyball and jumped to block a guy smashing from the other side. His feet crossed under the net and I landed with my left foot on his foot. I couldn’t walk the moment that happened, I had to sit down for a few minutes. My ankle got swollen and was hurting quite a lot. I did the trip to Panama City anyway, and Eybis arranged a doctor for me at her work. I had to take x-ray pictures of the foot at the hospital, buy an ankle ... read more

After our time in Aruba, we were ready for more antics in Curacao. It didn’t end up being as amazing of a day, but it was still pretty nice. Nicole, Steph, Katelyn, and I ate lunch at a nice little restaurant overlooking the water. It was so relaxing watching the sailboats and parasailers out on the ocean. We then walked around town, visiting some stores and eventually meeting up with Jimy for smoothies at a little street café. It was then time for more shops, a short visit to a playground, then got another sweet fix with some ice cream - just before heading back to the ship. It was a lot more chill than our day in Aruba, but still very nice. ... read more

Though Grace and I had already planned a trip to visit South Florida, Grace found a great deal to spend a few days in the island of Curacao that left from Miami. Both of us had never done an island vacation before, so we were both excited to give it a try and see how we liked it. Instead of the usual hustle of going from museum to museum or watching a baseball game or finding a new place to eat, we were going to try and do nothing at all. Just hang out on the beach. We stayed four nights at the Lodge Kura Hulanda & Beach Club, which is located on the far western end of the island. ... read more

Hello everyone, I have actually been home for almost a week now but I thought I would tell you briefly about my final days in Curacao. I have to admit getting used to the incredible mounds of snow back here in Toronto after enjoying the sunshine in Curacao;however I have had the best time this week celebrating my 30th birthday-many of you in town came to my party hat party on Saturday and it was great to see you there. Any way... here are some final stories about Curacao. On Sunday I went with my friend Amarelys to sing at her church. The service was actually all in Dutch but the hymns were sung in English, Dutch and Papiamentu. In the late afternoon we went to see the Adult parade of Karnaval. The streets were packed ... read more

Saturday, February 2, 2008 We're in route to Curacao after an excellent start with American Airlines. I was checked in separately from Alex due to my confirmation not pulling up in their system. Found out the hard way that they charge a flat $50 for anything over 50 pounds. Completely forgetting I packed an 8 pound laptop in my bag, I came in five pounds to heavy and couldn't transfer weight to our other bag since his was already checked in. I suppose now I know at least... Random Thoughts on the Plane - as this is my journal after all... I'll be 23 this upcoming St. Patty's day. I've never been one to take life for granted, I'd imagine after being exposed to death early on from a series of friends and peers, all before ... read more
