Today we got up early, around 7a or so. We ate a free cinnamon roll from the hotel which wasn't very good and got ready to go for a walk. We decided to head up to "the split" - which was created by the 1961 Hurricane Hattie that hit Caye Caulker, splitting the island in two. We were told by a local guy that it wasn't originally as large as it is now, but that the gap was made bigger by hand as fisherman and people realized it would make for a convenient waterway. Now it's home to some broken concrete walkways and the Lazy Lizard - a waterfront bar.
We walked around a little bit, went around to the other side of the island, and then came back to the split and waded in the water for awhile. Adam spent some time playing with hermit crabs and then we decided to head over to the Lazy Lizard. There are a few tables in shallow water to hang out on, so we grabbed some beers and just hung out for a few hours. It's an excellent place to just sit and chill...though they do blast reggae music at top volume. As
it got a bit later in the morning more people showed up. Adam found 5 different types of crab around the area - hermit, a small green crab, some furry looking small crabs, a crab that looked like a rock (and was feisty and unhappy when Adam picked him up), and big crab that he tried to get to hold, but the crab was faster then him.
At one point there were a bunch of people clustered around off the end of the concrete walkway pointing at something so Adam went over to see what they were looking at. He told me to come over quickly and see. It was a manatee! It swam right up to where we were standing and lifted it's nose out of the water to say hello. It stayed for a few minutes and then swam off. It was so cool to just randomly see one swim right by.
We hung out until about noon, then we decided to head back and get some food. We went to Syd's for lunch. It's on Middle St, and was run by a very friendly woman. Adam got some chicken tosadas and I tried some fry chicken. Both
were excellent and fresh, but it was a ton of food.
We headed back to the hotel and went down to the pool in the afternoon. We swam around a little bit, but mostly tried to hang out in the shaded part. It felt good to be in the water, even though the temperature was pretty warm. After a couple of hours we headed back to the room for showers and tried to take a nap. Neither one of could fall asleep, so we just had some quiet time - reading or watching TV. We eventually got ready for dinner and headed out after 7p. We went to Roses Bar and Grill, which is just up the street from where we are staying. They have a selection of fresh seafood laid out for you to pick from, and whatever you choose they throw on the grill that's right out front. They had lobsters and a few different fishes - grouper, red snapper and hogfish. They also had a queen (slipper) lobster, which the guy grilling said would give you good luck if you ate it (or so the story goes). We decided to split a hogfish, which is a type
of fish we had never had, or even heard of. It came with a small shrimp ceviche appetizer, and some curry rice and baked potato.
After picking out our meal, we walked inside the open-air restaurant to find a table. It was more busy then some of the other restaurants, and the ambiance was relaxed and nice. It was decorated with old buoys turned into lanterns. I really liked how that looked. After a bit our food was delivered to us and the fish was amazing. It was incredibly fresh, moist and just delicious. I was happy we decided to split it because it was so much food. We were extremely satisfied with our choice in fish, and it's one of the best fish meals I've ever had.
