Annamaria and Michael were going to catch up with us later in the day at Coles Bay in their campervan so we headed off with a list of places to visit along the way. Heading east past the airport we stopped at Sorell to get groceries and wine for the next two days. From there we passed where we should have stopped at the Tasman Bush Gardens, but, never mind, we could do that on the way back in a couple of days. Next we stopped at St John The Baptist church (built 1820’s) at Buckland to look at the stained glass window dating back to the 14thCentury from Hastings Abbey in England. The building is made of the local cream sandstone and the glass work on the other windows is superb especially the flowers. The ... read more

It is a rainy day. We took the car into Hobart intending to have a look around the city but the rain put us off that idea. We thought taking the ferry up the river to the MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) art museum would be a good idea but it was booked out. Instead, we drove to the museum which had had a lot of publicity regarding the art and the architecture. We soon understood why it is popular and a huge attraction. It opened last year and is owned by a man called David Walsh who owned the land, the vineyard, some art and the $40M art gallery. By all accounts he had made his money from gambling. It is certainly different. It goes down 3 levels underground and is hewn out ... read more

After staying at Neal's father's house in Seatoun Heights overnight, we were up at 4am for a taxi to the airport and an early morning flight out of Wellington. Unfortunately, overnight a huge storm (weather bomb) had brewed up over the middle of the country bringing heavy rain and high gale force winds. We boarded the plane on time but sat on the tarmac bouncing about for about an hour waiting to leave. Eventually, they towed the plane to a more sheltered location so that the bags could be loaded. Surprisingly enough once the bags were loaded we were able to leave despite the high winds. We flew out directly into the wind and with a bit of turbulence eventually cleared the clouds into calmer weather. Air New Zealand endeavours to make sure you have the ... read more

What a night we had in our hut and tents. The wind blew and it poured down. It was an interesting way to start the day running around outside in our gummies, boots and rain coats endevouring to have breakfast and pack up without getting too wet into the bargain. However, the rain did not let up so we set off in all our rain gear - some more adequate than others. At least the wind had dropped so the chill factor wasn't too bad. Walking in the forested areas also provided some protection. We eventually came to a lagoon called the Blue Lagoon which wasn't blue. Once apon a time it had been but vegetation drainage had changed the colour of the water. From the lagoon onwards the track widened and some walking was on ... read more

From the Valley Camp we walked back to the Cricket Pitch and climbed up the hill and along the old pack track to the fencer's camp in Shingley Creek. The pack track was used for carting fencing gear and mustering in this part of the station. Along the track was an old snow fence built in the the 1930's to stop the sheep getting too high in the mountains. It remains in remarkably good order and not as rusty as one might expect. From the highest part of the ups and downs of this part of the track we eventually wound our way down and around a valley and onto our destination of the Bush Hut just over 8 kilometres from our start. Parts of the track are fairly slushy after rain so it pays to ... read more

Near the Cook House is the old Homestead originally built as a cottage for the head shepherd of Glens of Tekoa station in 1882. Since then it has been added to over time and now appears badly in need of renovating to a cohesive dwelling in it's original style. The Shand family now live in a more modern home near the old homestead. We left the station homestead and farm base and headed up the valley along the Dove River flats with views of the surrounding mountains and lower hills covered with broom, matagouri and manuka scrub. It is easy to see how the farm of 7100 hectares has not been productive. Much of the good land is covered with scrub whilst the higher hills are alpine and non productive. With lamb and wool prices down ... read more

Karilyn, Neil, Corrine, Dougal, Anne, Joce, Lindsay and I left Richmond at 1pm and headed south stopping first at Maruia for a coffee and then on to Hanmer Springs for dinner before continuing south to Hurunui where we turned inland towards the Alps. We travelled 20 kms on the Amuri Plain alongside the Balmoral Forest before turning north from the Hurunui River along the Dove River through steep sided valleys with steeply dipping greywacke cuttings until we arrived at the Hurunui High Country Track start at the Island Hills Station. Here we were met by Mandy Shand and shown our quarters for the first night at the old Cook House. The building is split into several rooms consisting of a shower, large kitchen and lounge, four double bedrooms, a bunkroom and two outside toilets (flushing). Since ... read more

We left Grindelwald at 4pm on Tuesday, Swiss time, for the long trip home beginning with trains from Interlaken with a change at Bern and then onto Zurich airport. We flew Emirates Airlines to Dubai (6 hours flight, 3 hour wait), to Syney ( 13 hours flight, 2 hour wait), Auckland ( 3 hours flight, 3 hours wait), Nelson (1.15 flight). A total of 37.5 hours travelling. Awful! But needs must! Any one who has done these long hauls knows that you just have to endure, for better, for worse. We were met at Nelson Airport by big sister Carol and Karilyn. Lovely. It was so nice to see familiar faces and Kiwi voices. After so many weeks of foreign languages it was a real treat to hear familiar accents again. Wonderful. Lindsay drove home and ... read more

And so, the 3 month odyssey comes to an end. The day dawned clear, sunny and warm. A great day for holiday makers and many people were seen heading for the hills in their hiking gear or cycling gear. There were also many sunburnt bodies from yesterday's summery weather. It seems that summer has well and truly kicked in and whilst this may appear to be bad for us, it has saved us from getting too steamed up while hiking up mountains. Cooler is better and September is a far more sensible time to be in Europe. It was hard farewelling the house which may be sold by the next time we visit (if it happens again). It has been a home for us for 10 visits so we feel quite attached to it. A farewell ... read more

It’s the Swiss National Day today and one of the reasons we came back here before leaving for home. Our memories of the last one we saw encouraged us to stay a couple of days longer. We’ll see if this evenings celebrations live up to expectation. Today we did another favourite but it also meant being in amongst large numbers of people. It is a Public Holiday and the weather is superb so we cannot expect any less given our route for the day - Mannlichen, Kleine Scheidegg, Wengin, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, Grusalp, back to Lauterbrunnen and home. We walked to Grund and took the cable car up to Mannlichen and walked to Kleine Scheidegg. The mountains are in their most absolute magnificence today. Clear blue skies, a lot of snow and 360 degree views. We sat ... read more
