After some discussion last night on possibilities for today, we decided to visit Bad Ragaz and the Tamina Gorge. What a great choice it was. Bad Ragaz is a town in St Gallen Canton near the border of the eastern Graubünden Canton. It is a Spa and Resort with supposedly restorative waters from a spring from up the Tamina Gorge. A bus takes you up into the gorge to a large building and chapel and we walked from there into the gorge. What a revelation this was after the Gorge we visited the other day in GaPa. This gorge is narrow too, but has huge, straight up soaring rock walls for 100s of meters. Above you can see where the water has eaten away at the limestone to form a crevasse to the daylight. Way below, ... read more

Our leaving GaPa to make our train connections today nearly didn't happen. We had stood around waiting for half and hour for our train to leave thinking that we were waiting for another train. A couple turned up one minute before leaving time with their bikes and we thought they were cutting it fine before realising that was our train! We moved fairly quickly to get on board just in time. The signs were confusing - well, that is our excuse. On a later train, we got on the back carriage which was being dropped off to another destination. That could have been interesting! Fortunately, the guard checked everyone and moved us out. We said good bye to GaPa at 10.00am and headed across southern Germany using a Bavarian ticket on regional trains. Our apartment owner had told us of a sheep showing day in Garmisch town. Being sheep owners, of course we had to have a look. At 9.30 it was in full swing in the main street. There were dozens of sheep all corralled into wooden pens, presumably each owner had a yard for his/her sheep. All the sheep were quite different than ours. They were big, like ours. Had long legs, like ours, but there the similarity ended. They had large rounded noses, long floppy ears, and wool that was long and straight and quite coarse. In a larger yard were the judges where contestants showed off each animal. The owners, mostly men, but one woman and one child, were dressed in traditional costume. This is obviously the mens day as it was them who wore ... read more

We weren't sure what to do with today as the forecast said one thing and reality was another. It was raining so cycling didn't look like a great idea. Since the shops are closed tomorrow we figured that getting our foodstuffs to take to Monday would be a good idea for the morning. It is only a 10 minute walk into town to the nearest supermarket and after a coffee in town it was lunchtime when we got back. By this time the cloud had lifted a little and the drizzle had stopped. We set off with all our gear for the Partnachklamm Gorge in the afternoon as the information suggested that we could get wet from dripping walls. It was warm again so we set off in our shorts in typical Kiwi style. I was ... read more

The forecast was right. It did rain, it did thunder and the day looked to be somewhat dicey. But, we have packs, raincoats and umbrellas. We needed to use the last of our 3 day Zugspitze Pass which meant heading up the valley again. We decided to walked around the Eibsee which is a lovely lake at the head of the valley. We got "Little Toot" to the Eibsee station and set off in drizzle around this stunning lake. It is a 2 hour walk around on a very good track with many benches to stop and admire the views and plenty of rubbish bins. The water is clear and aqua in colour set in a steep basin filled with trees down to the water. We found a bench to sit on for our lunch under ... read more

The weather is about to change so we had to make the most of the perfect weather for the mountain tops. We got "Little Toot" at a nearby station to Kreuzeck-Alpspitzbahn for the cable car to the top of Osterfelderkopf (great words, eh?). Despite the fact that we've been on these cable ways many times, it never ceases to amaze me how they go up such steep faces and for such long distances just held on by a thick wire. This one took us up to 2100m to the inevitable restaurant, of course. At this location there is a AlpspiX viewing platform which is structured out over a 1000m drop! I could manage to look down from some of it but straight down below was all a bit much. However, the views to the close shear rock ... read more

It was a bright, clear, calm and sunny day with a high of 28 degrees so it looked like a perfect day to visit the Zugspitze or the highest mountain in Germany. We got a 3 day Zugspitze ticket at the station which will allow us to get onto the mountain railways and chairlifts. The trip we did today was an engineering miracle started back in the 1920s when the first cog railway was constructed. Since then cable ways have been added or updated to cater for growth. Our cog train took us first up to Grainau, a village further up the valley. We then changed to the Zugspitze train which took us right up to 2600 meters. It is very steep and looking at the mountain you would wonder how a train could get to ... read more

Today was a day to get ourselves familiar and oriented with the valley so after a bit of house keeping we headed into the town area to explore. There is more to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen area than initially expected and we did need to get ourselves oriented with what was what and where. The maps supplied either didn't show enough or were oblique maps so were confusing in how to find where paths went and the actual direction. We wandered into the main part of town and found a tranquil town with a pedestrian only street, many buildings painted with historical frescoes, restaurants, cafes, a park with gardens etc like many towns but this time with a special character, surrounded by high, craggy mountains with the highest mountain in Germany, the Zugspitze. No doubt over the past ... read more

Today was a travelling day from Passau to Gamisch-Partenkirchen or GaPa so we were up early to drag our bags a kilometre away over very bumpy paved streets. How the wheels don't fall off the bags is beyond me. Our 9am train was a regional train to Munich then a change to GaPa. Using a Bavarian Ticket is really cheap but you cannot use the fast trains so we had "Little Toot" which tooted incessantly until we got beyond Muhldorf and he stopped, got a wriggle on and raced into Munich. Our train to GaPa was much quieter and stopped at all the tourist spots along the way. I hadn't realised that the area had so many lovely lakes so we'll be doing a bit of back tracking to check out one of the lakes and ... read more

The day started with a bun fight at breakfast time. This location is obviously a favourite with the oldies as the place was full of them. By the look of them they are there for the buffet dinner and breakfast as what they lack in body power they make up for in eating! It wasn't a good place to put cyclists as it's out of town, there is nowhere to go and the directions were hopeless. So, that set us up for a real good start. How to get back to the bike trail? We got back to town in reverse but from there it all turned bad and we couldn't find the cycle trail. We asked for directions and were soon off again but still managed to turn too early near the river. We eventually ... read more
