Four months of travel in Africa and SouthEast Asia as part of a gap year before University

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona September 3rd 2010

Well in the end, Hannah's doctor in Thailand recommended that she go home to recover for the next 3/4 weeks. So I too opted to abandon the trip rather than carry on alone and came back to Europe mid-August. Definitely disappointing, but it was nice to see friends in Paris before they all went back to university. And I soon decided to treat myself with a quick trip to Barcelona to stay with a friend on his boat. Lots of sunshine, restaurants, bars and general relaxation. Not to bad really. Working in Paris for the next month before starting at Cambridge in October. ... read more

After a week's hard work at the elephant sanctuary, we had a day to rest in Chiang Mai before trekking. Neither Hannah nor I had been feeling very well on the last few days of the sanctuary so it was also a chance to recover : pool, reading and even managed to venture to Doi Suthep in the afternoon, a temple high up on a hill (took a tuk-tuk) By the following day, I was feeling much better but Hannah wasn't so fortunate so she opted to stay in Chiang Mai while I went out into the jungle : Day 1 - I met the group ( two Dutch couples, a Spanish couple, two German girls) and our guides (Daye and Singh) early in the morning and we set off on the drive to the National ... read more

We arrived in Chiang Mai late morning after our long journey from the South and stumbled into our guesthouse. We explored the city in the afternoon, very small in comparison to Bangkok ! It was built in the 13th century and is surrounded by a moat and crumbling walls. Had a wander round the soi (small, winding streets where we are staying) area before treating ourselves to an "a La carte" meal. The following day, we begun our exploration further afield...Wat Chiang Man, the oldest temple of the city; Wat Phra Singh, one of the most impressive and pristine temples from the Lanna period among other places. It's a lot more laid back here and the temples seem less tourist orientated, a nice relief. In the evening, we headed to the "Night Bazaar" which we soon ... read more

The Full Moon Party. Ko Phangan. Immense. Where to begin ?! Well our preparation began in the morning as we strategically slept in to ensure we could handle the night. Relaxing morning, lunch and then were picked up for our transfer to the island. Toured Ko Samui, picking loads of people up and boarded our boat. Correction : speedboat. Class. Given the company of very excitable Aussies, it was time for the first drink of the afternoon. We then spent the afternoon with three of them, sitting on the beach, swimming in the sea and having a couple relaxed drinks over sunset and dinner. Hannah and I then abandoned the boys and went to check out the beach at night. Everything had changed and the image before us certainly lived up to expectations : loud music ... read more

After the journey from Krabi it was time to head to the beach and relax. By midday we were able to check in to our little bungalow and met our neighbors. After a torrential shower, during which Hannah and I took shelter on our balcony planning our trip, we decided it was time to see a little bit of the island. So we went to the most cultured spot we could find...well, not exactly. "Hinta" and "Hinyai", Grandfather and Grandmother rocks. These two of thousand of granite rock formations dotting the coast line were, well, no as innocent as they sounded. Basically naturally formed male and female genitalia. Hmmm... We then wandered around a local market selling loads of woodcarvings and other souvenirs, unfortunately too early in the trip to make any purchases. Next to the ... read more

Krabi. Definitely my favorite place in Thailand so far. Caught a ferry and then a longboat (travelling here is never direct!) to Rai Lay beach. We stayed on the more budget-friendly East side, just a few minutes walk from the gorgeous beaches on the dream-on West side. Nevertheless, for just over ten pound a night, less than a drink in a paris club, the resort is pretty luxurious, so why not ? After all, we have labelled ourselves as flashpackers, basically backpackers who enjoy the comforts of air conditioning, hot showers and the like. Natalie opted for her own room as she wanted some space, so Hannah and I spent the afternoon till late on the beach. Warm sea, soft sand, sunset, drinks, what more could a girl want ? This place is incredible as it's ... read more

The last five days of the Thailand adventure have been spent on Ko Phi Phi Don, a small island located an hour and a half gtom the mainland. We arrived on the 17th via a ferry from Phuket on which Nat and I amused ourselves by sitting at the edge of the boat with our feet dangling over the water. The island is unbelievably beautiful, the image of paradise : limestone cliffs strikingly rising from crysta,l clear water, pure white velvety beaches, palm trees, jungle. The town itself, is relaxed and chilled out, lined with bars and shops. We are off to Krabi tomorrow after only a fwe days here, but it really feels as though we've been here for ages. 17/07 - Our first day on Phi Phi, we arrived at the port early afternoon. ... read more

Three very relaxing days in Phuket, one of Southern Thailand's many islands. Arrived early the morning of the 14th after a lush night bus journey. 13/07 evening - The bus journey although it turned out alright in the end was a bit stressful to start with. It was meant to pick us up at 6pm from the hotel but as the minutes ticked by we became nervous that it might not show up. I called the agency and they assured me someone would be there soon, but I was not convinced. After hearing so many stories about cons and scams, I couldn't help but think this may be the case. How long till I could call again ?Finally a woman turned up and brought us, with other passengers, to a highway where we were to wait. ... read more

We've just spent the last four days in Bangkok - bright neon signs, ancient temples, supermodern shopping malls - this truly is a city of great variety. Glad to have stayed here but ready to move on to the islands of Southern Thailand ! 10/07 - Arrived in Bangkok and took a taxi to Khao San Road, the backpacker's haven. We managed to check into the hotel, but not without difficulty as even though I had asked for a third mattress, we were put in a closet-sized room with barely a full sized bed. Welcome to Thailand, scamming capital of the world. Through a bit of haggling, mostly on Natalie’s part, as I was getting a little bit stressed, we sorted out the situation and got a room with king sized bed for the three of ... read more

After hours and hours of travelling, I have finally touched down in Bangkok. I flew out from Heathrow, so caught the Eurostar to London on Thursday afternoon for a flight to Oman. The layover was eleven hours so opted to spend the day in the city as opposed to the airport ! Khalil, one of dad's friends lives in Muscat and kindly picked me up from the airport to take me around for the day. Very difficulult to spot him among hundreds of men all dressed in the traditional white robe, so a good thing he could pick me out ! Unfortunately it was a Friday (the equivalent to a Sunday in Europe) so many sights were closed. Had a long drive through the city, as it is spead out over quite a large area, to ... read more
