November 13, 2009 Today was another day that ended a long way from where it began. We began the day by being dropped off at the Wellington airport by Mark and Karen. After two flight delays and a very strange band concert/dance performance in the airport terminal, we boarded the flight to Westport. The plane was very small and we were two of only five passengers on the flight. Once in Westport, we went about trying to hitchhike the 60 miles to the start of the Heaphy Track. Having no luck and limited time to get there, we paid for a transport company to take us instead. The first section of the track followed the coast for about ten miles, and took us four hours to cover. It was nice walking, listening to the ocean waves ... read more

bNovember 8, 2009 Things worked out well for us today, as we had no trouble getting to the trailhead, 15 miles from where we stayed last night. The owner of the motorcamp offered to drive us right to the start for a mere $20. Any transport company would have easily charged $30 per person. With enough food to last three days, we set off into the Tararua mountain range to do the Southern Crossing. These are the same mountains that gave us trouble during our last trip, and they are known to frequently take the lives of trampers. The last two deaths were only a month ago, and they were two locals. So we came prepared to be on top of our game. The track started with a brutal climb from the river in the jungle-looking ... read more

November 3, 2009 I spent the first two weeks of my time here in New Zealand being a tour guide for my Mom and Aunt Betty, as we put 4500 km (about 2500 miles) on a rental car trying to see as much of the country as possible. It was a great time, but by the end of it, I was looking forward to getting off the roads and into the wilderness. After dropping off my Mom and Aunt at the airport in Auckland, I met up with Eric at Nigel and Tamara’s house- friends we met during our last trip. We spent two nights with them, hanging around the city, getting haircuts on the deck, and enjoying fantastic hospitality. Then, yesterday morning, we caught a bus out of the city to get to Turangi, a ... read more

Trip Summary Where to begin. I’ve waited a couple of days since arriving back home to write out a summary of the trek in hopes that it would all have begun to set in and I would know what to say about the whole thing. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and I think it may end up taking quite a while for the experience to fully set in. What I can say is that it was great, without a doubt the most fun and excitement I’ve ever had in my life so far. It was three months of living completely different from anything I’ve known, and it was strangely addictive. Eric and I set out with the goal of walking in a continuous north-south line across the country, but found ourselves changing the plan many ... read more

January 15, 2008 At 6:15 this morning we said goodbye to Betti before Helen took Eric and I to the airport. It was really sad to have to say goodbye to her, since we have all become really good friends over the last month we’ve spent traveling together. At the airport we had our first snag of the day. Our plane was “having difficulties,” so the flight had been cancelled. They had frantically tried to put all the passengers on other flights, but of course had forgotten to put us on one. It seemed that it would be very difficult to get us on a flight to Wellington, so I suggested that they could really send us anywhere in the North Island, we just wanted to get across the Strait. They couldn’t fathom that passengers wouldn’t ... read more

January 3, 2008 Today marks a radical shift in our journey. Eric and I have essentially run out of good tracks along our north-south route, but have found out about many great places to see and walks we’d like to visit that are in the general southern region. We were prepared to hitchhike to get to some of these places, but since Betti has joined us for awhile we realized that hitchhiking with three of us would be a near impossibility. So, we chose to rent a car that the three of us will use to see the south of the South Island, as well as take it north along the west coast to see areas we missed over there. Then we will take it across Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch, where Eric and I will fly ... read more

December 27, 2007 It was a leisurely morning, as we didn’t have to leave for the track today until mid-afternoon. The girls and us took care of grocery shopping, hut tickets, and everything else before meeting back at the hostel to pack everything up. I also took some time to rearrange my travel plans for coming home, as we will complete our hiking a month and a half early. Around 2:00 p.m. Bart picked us up and the five of us were together again in the car that had taken us on a very memorable road trip. We cruised along the side of the lake again, following the same road as to the last track for eighty percent of the way. Then after Bart left us at the car park we began our first day on ... read more

December 22, 2007 Djuke had already left earlier in the morning, but Bart, Betti, Eric, and I had breakfast together before all piling into Bart’s car once more. We dropped Betti off at a good place to hitchhike and then Bart drove us the hour and a half up the lake to the trailhead near the mouth of the Rees River. So, the walking began again and took us through a farmland valley towards the headwaters of the river. Many places were boggy, and it was unavoidable to get my feet wet. The bogs were due to the large number of streams coming down from the mountains that would cross our path and settle in the valley before joining the Rees River. The streams were also obstacles: some were easy enough to cross on the rocks ... read more

December 17, 2007 As I write this, I am sitting here alone in someone’s car that I met only three hours ago, and I will remain here alone for roughly twenty-four hours. If this is confusing to you then let me tell you the story of today. Today’s events actually started yesterday night at the hostel, where I saw a post on the bulletin board about a guy heading towards Queenstown the next morning with room in his car. The post mentioned sharing fuel costs so we said forget it-- we’d hitchhike instead. So we took the city bus out to the edge of Christchurch the next morning and began to hitchhike. Nothing happened for quite awhile besides a few conversations with strange people walking down the road until a car with two girls and a ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch December 16th 2007

December 12, 2007 Today began with us being just as far from the trail, and actually possibly farther than yesterday, despite having spent hours on the road yesterday. But today would be different. Hitchhiking at first produced nothing until the owner of the motor park arranged for us to ride twenty-five kilometers with a delivery truck. The truck driver left us in Reefton and we stuck our thumbs out again. Within half an hour a guy drove up in a crappy red car, which he said cost him $300. I mention the price and the crappiness because it is overwhelmingly the case that people with crappy cars and noticeably lower economic situations are the ones who nine times out of ten will give us hitchhikers a ride. We have yet to get a ride from someone ... read more
