The End
What a great adventure. Glad you all made it relatively safe and bravo to Nick for losing 50 pounds. Hope to see you soon now that you're home.

Chad - some of those pictures make us wish we were with you. Although we would not have the energy we can fantasize! We are looking forward to seeing you and your pictures when you arrive home on the 30th. U B & I will be arriving at your house the 29th to greet you! Till then - may the Lord keep you in the palm of his hand keeping healthy and safe!!! Aunt B

Dude, I'd rather read the text than look at the pictures, come on...If you've seen one picture of New Zealand, you've seen them all haha...And I love the part of the non-stop movie quoting, that made me laugh out loud...Stay safe out there the rest of the way, don't get hit by any tsunamis...

Glad you made it
That was quite a trip. I can identify with your soul searching when you felt you might have brought your friends on a trip that could be their last. It's a disturbing situation, but you made it and it is now just a memory.

earthquake
Hey Dale, no the earthquake didn't affect us at all. We were 3 hours away when it hit and didn't feel it. There was a momentary rush on bread, milk, and gas, but then it calmed down. our friends in christchurch were ok also. But the city as a whole has sustained a LOT of damage, measured in the 15-20 billion dollar range. We can't get into the downtown area yet because a week later they are still pulling bodies out from the rubble.

Earthquake
Chad - did the earthquake in Christ Church impact you guys at all? Hope you are all okay.

unfortunately I was so excited to throw them that we couldn't wait to get the camera out. But you'll just have to enjoy the stories that will be told of it for years to come.

I'll be Careful in the future
Chad - after hearing your story with the Israelies, I will be more careful around you, especially when I beat you in tennis!!!

Want to meet?!
Hey Chad, You keep on posting great stories on this site!! So I decided to come over to New Zealand as well!! No kidding, My boyfriend and I have won a scholarship which starts with a week in New Zealand at 3 March! And of course we take a 2 week holiday after that as well. Let's keep in contact (if you guys want to), maybe you like it when we join you during one of the hikes. We'll be somewhere in between Christchurch and Picton for the scholarship. Just let me know if you like the idea!! Cheers!! Djûke and Henk (from the Netherlands of course)

How are there no pictures of the most glorious part of the post....the throwing of the silverware? I would expect that to be documented for all eternity...at least we have the written word to imagine the awesomeness that was...

MacGyver
Who would've thought the corkscrew tool would have presented an alternate function than the assistance required to numb the pains of the trail with wine? Looks like your unshakable will broke the operational life of your pack, just after the two of you went 2000 miles together. I've got a less MacGyver like solution for if the fix fails: divide your stuff equally into the remaining space of Nick and Andrew's packs, and feel the cool breeze on your back while the two of them sweat it out from the extra poundage!

Wohoo!
Hi Chad and crew...REAL (NZ) trampers get their feet wet, sleep in rock bivvys, ad enjoy "the zone". Isn't our country SOOO beautiful? Praise God for the creation. So thrilled that Nick has been transformed...Clarence-Waiau was a rude intro...shall we revisit it?..!!!!

I like that you don't follow your own advice...Why bother listening to what I just told Nick? I can surely make this no problem haha...How do you keep your camera from getting ruined when you fall in the water/ford rivers? Glad to hear your knee's doing better, stay safe out there....

Awesome
When you guys went so long without an update I figured one of two things--you were dead, or else you were off doing something awesome. I'm glad it was the latter. This trip looks ridiculously incredible. You must be glad you didn't have to spend it sitting in a tent for 48 hours straight! How was doing the route in the reverse direction?
26th January 2011

No problem Nancy. You sons are safe and doing quite well. They're getting to be real NZ trampers. They'll come back better than they left! Thanks for your concern for our safety though, it's good to know our parents care.
