Last weekend (10 - 13 July 2008), I traveled with my family to Sầm Sơn beach and relaxed for a few days. The beach which is located 180km south of Hanoi is a popular destination for north Vietnamese during the summer time (from May to July). During the other period, there are few tourists going to this beach due to the typhoons and cold water during the winter. In fact, the beaches in northern Vietnam are not as good as the ones in other parts of Vietnam. Although the distance from Hanoi to the beach is only 180km, it took us even 4 hours to get there. On Highway No. 1, the speed limit goes from 40km to 80km an hour. We went through Phủ Lý, Ninh Bình and got into Thanh Hoá city. The beach ... read more

Bangkok (2001 - 2012) During 11 years (2001 - 2012) I made 9 trips to Thailand. I often spent a day or two in Bangkok and then I had to move on to other countries or cities. My favorite sites in Bangkok are the Grand Palace, some temples, Khao San road, Chao Praya river etc. I also took a train to Chiang Mai from the railway station near Don Muang airport, and traveled in a night bus from Morchit Bus Station to Sukhothai. My two visits to the Grand Palace were in April 2001 and June 2008, ie it took me 7 years to go back to this place. On both visits I wore Vietnamese traditional dress Áo Dài and both locals and foreigners at the site loved it so much that they asked me to ... read more

Sunday 15 June 2008, I woke up at 5am and rode my motorbike to the West Lake. Around that area, there are many flower villages. I went to one of them which is located near the West Lake Water Park, in order to take photos of a lotus lake and some activities that only take place in the early hours of the morning. The lotus season in Hanoi starts from June and lasts 3 months. Every morning from 5am to 7am, the local residents, who own the lotus lakes, tour around the lakes on very small boats (in Vietnamese, we call them “thuyền thúng”) and pick both flowers and leaves, following the orders from their clients who are waiting on the bank. This is a wholesale business. Any business people, who want to buy lotus flowers ... read more

June 2nd 2008

Sunday, 1 June 2008 - We left Hanoi at 8am and arrived at Hạ Long bay at 11:30am in the rain. This is my 7th visit to Hạ Long bay, however my most recent trip was made 5 years ago. After I was back in Hanoi from Guilin last month, I decided to make a trip to Hạ Long bay for taking photos. Often I traveled to Hạ Long bay or Cát Bà island for at least 2-3 days, but this time I decided to book a one day trip with a travel agent in Hanoi’s Old Quarter. After a 5 hour boat ride on the bay, we were back in Hanoi by bus at 8:30pm. Hạ Long bay (i.e. Bay of Descending Dragons) is located in Quảng Ninh province in north east Vietnam. The distance ... read more

Here I am again at the Jing Xiu Shan park (công viên Thanh Tú Sơn) in Nanning, China. On my first visit to Nanning 8 years ago (in April 2000), I also spent a morning visiting the park and liked the place so much that this time when I returned to Nanning, I asked the Chinese tourist guide to organize a trip for us to the park. Some people on the tour had not been there yet. I told them it was a great place to visit. Each of us paid 60 Yuan to the Chinese tourist guide and driver. They took us to the park and we spent 2 hours over there before leaving Nanning for Pingxiang. A new place I saw this time is Guan Yin pagoda. The other sites I’ve seen before, for ... read more

Guilin city, 1 and 2 May 2008 - We arrived in Guilin at 1:00pm. It took us 5 hours to travel by bus from Nanning to Guilin (500km). Our first impression on the city is the sweet osmanthus trees on both sides of the streets and we saw them everywhere in the city. Guilin means "forest of sweet osmanthus" (Quế Lâm). 80% of the trees in this city are sweet osmanthus trees, 20% are peach trees and others. Our Chinese tourist guide pointed at a board on the roof of a large building and said "There are 2 rivers and 4 lakes in Guilin." Guilin is located in the north east of Guangxi province. The population in Guilin is only 2-3 million people, 68% of them are the Hanzu people (người Hán). The 2 famous rivers ... read more

April 30th 2008

I’m just back in Hanoi after traveling 1,800 km by bus between Hanoi and Guilin. On the way to Guilin, I had to stay for a couple of nights in Nanning. I traveled to Nanning for the first time in April 2000, ie 8 years ago. Nanning is the capital city of Guangxi province. The majority of ethnic people in this province are the Zhuang people (Khu tự trị dân tộc Choang, tỉnh Quảng Tây). As Guangxi and Yunnan provinces are bordering with Vietnam and I traveled on a tour, I didn’t use my passport and apply for a Chinese visa. The travel company arranged an “Entry and Exit Permit” (Giấy thông hành) for us, using our ID cards. In case I want to head further north, I would need a Chinese visa. On 30 April, ... read more

April 23rd 2008

I traveled to Sapa for the first time in April 1998, ie exactly 10 years ago. At the time I traveled by bus and it took me 12 hours from Hanoi to Sapa (Never again!). Last weekend I returned to Sapa, but this time I traveled with my parents and their friends. We traveled by night train from Hanoi to Lào Cai (approx. 350km, 8 hours by train), then we got a bus to Sapa (38km, an hour by bus). Things have changed much during the last 10 years since my first visit, but the place is always beautiful with its mountain and rice terrace scenery, as well as colorful costumes of the ethnic minority people (mainly H’mong, Dzao and Tày). They are typical features of the north west region which is one of the most ... read more

Sapa market is located right at the center of the city, just a short walk to the old church, which was built by the French in the last century. There are many things that are sold inside the market and at the surrounding area of the market. At night, many ethnic minority people also sell their products on the pavement along the streets in Sapa's center. The photos in this blog were taken at Sapa market on 19 and 20 April 2008. The products for sale are local specialties, mainly medicinal herbs, weaving and hand embroidery bags, pillow sheets, wooden paintings, dolls wearing traditional dress, local wine, and musical instruments of the ethnic minority people etc. The locals in these photos are the Red Dzao and H'mong ethnic minority people. Another market of the H'mong people ... read more
