After we finished our fabulous meal, we took a taxi to the Southern China University of Technology. My friend's classmates were attending a presenation/competitino on urban design in Guangdong province. We got horribly lost trying to find the right building and ended up seeing a decent amount of the campus. (It turns out we walked right by it when we arrived but didnt' see the sign on the other side of the building and kept going.) Since I've posted many photos of my school, I thought it might be fun to share some photos of another university's campus. I love the buildings and old architecture at Southern China University of Technology 华南理工大学 but prefer the landscaping at Peizheng. It was fun to walk among the older buildings and trees and try to imagine all the things ... read more

Dim Sum

A popular activity in southern China is going out for yum chaor dim sum. It started as an occasion to drink tea and then little snacks were added. Now it seems the food is just as, if not more important than the tea! Dim sum is a relaxed affair and a sitting can last for several hours while families and friends come together to chat, laugh, and enjoy each others' company. At more popular restaurants on weekends, there will often be as many people outside the restaurant waiting as there are inside eating! Two friends of mine came to GZ to visit. They're married, but one of them is in the US working on his Master's degree and his wife lives in Shenzhen while they work on her US visa. I hadn't seen them in over ... read more

Street Food

Street food is one of those things that's unique to a region and often overlooked when describing a culture. Yet, it's an essential part of life for many. It's cheap, fast, made to order, and tasty. Even in movies, how often do you see New Yorkers stopping at the hot dog cart, or people in some Asian country slurping a bowl of noodles with chopsticks? China is no different. Tonight my friends and I went out for a sampling of some of the street foods right by our school. First up is my favorite, jian bing. We usually call it a wrap, but it's more like a Chinese crepe. At 4 kaui (70 cents) each, it's a bargain and I have it for lunch a few times a week. It's also possible to have extra eggs ... read more

Wait, it's 2012? According to my students (who've all watched the popular movie doomsday thriller "2012") we're all doing to die by the end of the year! Luckily I refuse to watch such silliness and don't believe them. We had a nice little, last minute gathering for the new year. We gathered at Jane and Leo's for a night of games, laughter, and silliness. Not a lot to tell, but I did get some great photos to show you how our night went. By 12:30 we'd all grabbed leftover goodies and headed home. Not everyone is a night owl like me!... read more

The Tea Market

December 28th 2011

With all the time off we have (but are expected to be "around" in case there are any questions about our grades) a friend and I decided to take a trip into the city. We had a few places we wanted to stop, but at the top of my list was a tea wholesale market. In Guangzhou there are lots of little areas that specialize in selling one thing and lots of it. There's a market for leather goods, one for shoes, one for dried fish, and obviously one for tea. I'm sure there are others I haven't discovered yet. I was looking to buy a new tea set (yes, another one). I already have serveral, but each set is a different style made with different materials. I'm trying to purchase one of each kind while ... read more

Three Christmases

December 24th 2011

This year there were four Xmas parties to attend and I opted to attend three of them. Of course, starting off the festive season with baking was a requirement! A few of us gathered at Jane's apartment for an afternoon of mixing, rolling, cutting, and decorating. Since the red food coloring tends to turn pink, we opted to make our cookies green and blue and white, instead. After we got lazy with our decorating (you can only make so many cookies look nice before it gets tedious) our cookies turned into modern art you could eat. Thursday was my last day of exams and I decided staying home watching a holiday favorite, "Love Actually" was a better, more relaxing choice than heading out to hear the foreign teacher band play at the western restaurant. I knew ... read more

Nunchucks

December 20th 2011

One of my favorite final exams involved a student teaching us (me and 5 other students) how to use nunchucks. He brought in ones for all of us to try and then taught us some basic moves. We spread out to the far corners of the room, all fully aware that we were more likely to hit each other than we were to be successful. We all kept dropping them, the metal nunchecks making a loud clanging noise on the floor tiles; I felt bad for the class downstairs. I hit myself in the head a few times, but by the end was starting to get the hang of it. Well, getting the hang of it enough to not hit myself in the head every time I swung them around. (I can't say the same regarding ... read more

The Speech Team End of Term Party

I love receiving emails that begin, "Hi dear coach." That was the salutation in the email that contained these three photos. They were taken at the end of a very fun night at the end of a very fun term. Tonight was our last English Speech Team meeting. The team captains and I agreed to have it be half class and half party. I thought it might be nice to learn about a fun type of speech: the toast. I know that my students won't need to toast for any competitions next year, but it's still a valuable skill to learn. We talked about different types of toasts, when to give which kind, and what kinds of things are said in each situation. A common example was a party for one of the captains, ususally a ... read more

A Night at the Guangzhou Symphony

November 25th 2011

On Friday night the Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra gave a concert. I didn't even know Guangzhou had its own symphony orchestra until the day before. (Shenzhen didn't, I don't think, but it did have a lot of orchestras pass through and give concerts.) A few of my friends were going, but at the last minute one no longer could and asked if I would like her ticket. I jumped at the chance. We met up a bit before five o'clock to take the teacher bus into the city. (Many of the Chinese teachers don't live on campus.) Everyday there are teacher buses into GZ, and they're faster than the normal bus and have nicer seats. We figured we'd get into the city around 6 and have plenty of time for dinner before the concert at 8pm. While ... read more
