As it still hadn't stopped raining and there wasn't much we could do with Lewis, as he still can't stand up, we decided to go ahead with our tentative plans to visit the friends Tracey made in hospital last time we came. They live in Kentucky and true to form for Americans, told us it would take 3 hours max to get there, when it was actually 4 hours - they always make out everything is so close. We drove down on Saturday after lunch and it was dry and warm there. They live in a large house in the middle of an agriculture and mining area. Land is really cheap and you can just buy a plot and build whatever you want. Also true to form, they eat junk food, drink fizzy and snack on ... read more

The hospital changed our time so we didn't have to be there until 7.15. Lewis was fine the night before but in the morning he was nervous. The nurses were very good and let him sniff all the flavours that he could choose to go in his face mask for putting him to sleep. He went for water melon this time - it makes such a difference to the kids who are frightened of putting the mask on, you wonder why we dont do it in UK. He went down about 9.15am and was back in recovery by 11am. He was very shakey an upset but perked up after a while and had a bit to eat and drink. After a while though he started getting leg spasms and needed the valium IV to help with ... read more

We were woken up about 4am by a really load clap of thunder right overhead and fork lightening. We turned the weather channel on and there were severe weather warnings for our area. There had been several tornados in Oklahoma earlier in the day so it was a bit worrying. We rang the front desk and booked the shuttle for 7am to take us to the hospital, rather than driving, in case it got worse. We didn't really get back to sleep after that because of the noise. They had some really nice muffins at breakfast, so we bought back some stuff for our lunch, then set off. Dr Dobbs, Lewis' surgeon seemed really nice. He said he could loosen off the muscles that pull his knees in and make his left hip stiff, as well ... read more

We have had a proper chance to check out the hotel now and are pretty impressed. The breakfast buffet is included. You can make your own waffles, there's fruit, porridge, cooked stuff etc plus drinks. In the evening they also lay on a light meal, plus free beer and wine. The food is pretty basic - a nice salad, then a main course which changes every day. We ate there tonight as it was hammering with rain and pretty cold out but as there's no choice, we wont always bother. There is a small indoor pool and a nice hot jacuzzi. After all the travelling yesterday and sleeping scrunched up, Lewis was in a terrible state this morning and could hardly move. We sat him in the jacuzzi for a while, did some stretches and made ... read more

The day got off to a bad start as Tracey had been up most of the night with Alliyah, who was being sick. It was hard to leave her in such a sorry state but it would have caused big problems if she had been coming on the trip with us. Our flight should have been at 10.30am but due the volcano restrictions we were delayed. They handed out food vouchers at 12 o'clock which was ominous but we were off by about 2pm. Unfortunately we had to fly the long way - up and right around Iceland, over Greenland and down the coast of Canda - to get to Newark, which added nearly 2 hours to our flight time. Although we should have had over 4 hours to wait for our connecting flight, we actually ... read more

For our last day at Khao Sok, we were taken on a trip (6 in our party) to a speed boat pier and along the river to the mangrove swamps. We saw some 150 year old Banyan trees where the roots hang down like elephant tails. In the trees we saw a large bright green snake and a black one with yellow patches - both deadly. We then did a bit of kayaking before transferring to a Burmese Junk and having a buffet lunch of - you guessed it, noodles, rice, fish, prawns and finishing off with bananas, pineapple and water melon. After that we were taken to a deserted island for an hour to swim. We had to stay in the water as it was so hot out. We were taken back to the pier ... read more

We were collectd from our hotel in Krabi and had a very plush air con vehicle to ourselves for the 2 hour drive to our camp. After lunch we went on an elephant safari with another couple. We were on the elephant for 1 1/2 hours and saw some monkeys, a hornbill and some huge spiders. We got some fruit to feed them after which was fun. Then we went on a canoeing trip down the river and saw some kingfishers and a few other creatures. We had a chap to paddle for us. In the evening we had a film on elephants, then some local Thai dancers, then a cookery demo before dinner. All meals ar buffet style and they just lay stuff out and let it get cold. Even in restaurants they just serve ... read more

After we left Bangkok we flew 1 hour to Krabi. 20 min drive to our hotel which is on the edge of the town and beach, 5 mins walk. The room is very large with a balcony overlooking the pool, so we are pleased with it but the breakfast is very average, especially after the hotel in Bangkok. We have been very adventurous with our food. The first night we went into a restaurant and ordered things. They bought us some soup that we hadn't ordered but we werent quite sure if it was a finger washing bow. There was also an egg which upon checking was raw. I didn't know what to do with it so we left it - I later found out we should have put it in the soup, along with the ... read more

No problems with the flight apart from the very hot curry and no tv screens in frontm 11 hours later and a 45 min taxi ride we were at our hotel which was really swish. Best breakfast ever! First day we went on a tour. Only 4 of us and a queer guide. Went to the Grand Palace and saw the Emerald Budha, then China Town and the river etc. Food is really good. Never liked eating at reataurants with pictures on the menu but we need them here! Met up with Terry for a meal on Mon, then on Tues he took us to the floating markets on a long tailed boat and to the bridge over the river Kwai. A fantasic trip but it took 12 hour altogether so it was a long day ... read more
