So far life here in Ghana remains at a constant, yet slow and steady pace. I am getting into a routine with work and my home life, and am finding it quite pleasant. Granted weekends can be boring enough to make you contemplate picking scabs or burning random things (not that I have resorted to either!), however I have at long last begun to make some friends! And female too, in order to avoid the double edged intentions of Ghanaian males. One woman’s name is Delight and she works near me - she brought me to her house on Saturday and [View Full Entry]

Since the last time I posted I have started work, traveled to the North and back, and celebrated my 21st birthday! Whew, it's been a busy week! My trip to Wa was really good -- it was great to see the other WUSC volunteers again (there's 7 of us -- 3 Canadians and 4 Ghanaians) and we all did our orientation together. So it was nice to have a little reunion -- we had lots of delicious dinners (I thoroughly enjoyed Guinea Fowl, which is sort of like chicken, but tougher and saltier) and drank lots of beer :). The actual [View Full Entry]

Hello All! Finally, I have begun to take some pictures and now that I am back at work, I have a reliable internet connection that I can post them! I will post an entry tomorrow or the next day about my trip to North and all of the wonderful scenery I got to see and guinea fowl that I got to eat :). As for now, enjoy the pictures of my plane ride, Thanksgiving in Ghana, my house, and my office. Thank you all for your lovely messages that you have posted to the blog! I always enjoy reading people's comments [View Full Entry]

A lot has happened since the last time I posted - namely, I began my job at the Ghana National Education Campaign Coalition (GNECC) and have moved into what will be my home for the next ten months! Everyone keeps telling me I have lucky stars following me around to have found a house so quickly, especially one that is furnished! It all came about during a lunch meeting last week… As a part of our orientation, all of the volunteers went to the Ministry of Education’s Girl Education Service (who are partners of WUSC’s) to meet with them, and especially [View Full Entry]

Hello Everyone! I fianlly have the chance to update the blog and let you all know how it is going in beautiful Ghana. Since arriving here on Tuesday, I have found myself to feel strangely at home, as if all of this preparation truly did prepare me! I feel as if I kind of fell asleep for two days and then woke up and BAM! -- I'm in Africa. I love having this opportunity to travel, meet new people, and experience a completly different lifestyle. The people here are wonderful; so kind and freindly to foreigners and they love it when [View Full Entry]

So this entry is a bit delayed, I left until the very last minute, and by very last minute I mean that my cab to the airport is coming in an hour and a half! At 5:30pm I will be on my way to Ghana for the next ten months. The very popular question is "Has it hit you yet?" and my response as of yesterday was yes! Hardly seems real that what I have been waiting for since I came to UofT is now upon me. I am excited, but also a bit nervous and scared about all the unknown [View Full Entry]

I would say that aptly describes how the East Coast is treating me. My job has become very relaxing after a switch in focus from compiling massive preliminary indexes for a bibliography to a research project. The professor I'm working with is a wonderful man -- he gave me a paper to do on how oil money interacts with the political economy of Equatorial Guinea, which is now the top third oil producing African nation. So needless to say it pertains well to the academic side of next year and is holding my interest! He also needed someone to cat/house sit [View Full Entry]

What more could you ask for?! That's what I thought. Nada. Welcome one and all to the beginning of my global adventures... for the rest of the summer I will take you into the world of Antigonish in all of it's small town glory. The town has a population of roughly 4,500 and is located 2 hours north of Halifax, about a 10 minute drive in any direction from long stretches of sandy beach opening out onto the Atlantic ocean. Beautiful indeed! The weather finally started to turn this past week and we have been enjoying hot days in the [View Full Entry]
