On the first Friday of our visit to the children's home in Maechan, a team of 8 of us piled into the 4WD and began our ascent up to !@#$% village (I cannot spell or pronounce the name!). It is in a remote area of northern Thailand, less than 100kms from where we were staying, however, the journey took more than 2 1/2 hours due to the fact that it was up a mountain and the roads were very difficult to negotiate. We even got bogged at one stage and all had to get out :) One of our team members was also quite ill and we had to stop for the poor fellow to throw up on the side of the road. We were visiting this village for two reasons; 1. to run a pastors ... read more

Well, what an amazing day it has been. We arrived just over 24hrs ago to a humid mass of strange smells, kind people & a party going on just over from our hotel. Bangkok is overwhelming, there are billboards, lights, action, smells, food, animals, people, dancing, singing, motorbikes, scooters, tuk-tuks, buses, cars..... everywhere all at once, or so it feels like. After a good sleep last night we breakfasted before heading back to the airport (5 minutes away) this morning to visit the Thailand Tourist Bureau & Starbucks! We collected some brochures, and after an amazing Toffee Nut Frappuccino we caught the Sky Train and headed into the city centre of Bangkok :) What an incredible experience! We only had a day on Bangkok so we went to The Grand Palace to see where the Kings ... read more

Next Sunday (21st Nov) I will be travelling to Bangkok, Thailand, to meet up with a team of 14 others from Adelaide. As a team, we will then travel up to Chaing Rai (1000kms north of Bangkok) on Tuesday and will be staying at the MaeChan Children's Home, where 49 children are cared for by Pastor Songsak and his family. Many of us on the team sponsor some of these children in order to give them a better life than what they may have had, were they not living in the MaeChan Children's Home. We are going as a team to serve Pastor Songsak, to build relationship with the staff & children, to facilitate english lessons, to build a meeting room on site, to provide leadership training to local church leaders and to provide primary health ... read more

Our train to Da Nang was leaving Saigon at 11pm, so we enjoyed a lovely 'ca phe' while we waited at the station coffee house! It is very sad to say goodbye to Saigon as we have totally fallen in love with this city, but I'm sure we'll be back. Once we boarded the train and found our 'cabin' we found that we were sharing our room with two vietnamese men. One of which was an older gentleman who went straight to bed, the other who wasn't so much of a gentleman and who proved to be a bit of a pest. Despite that, we slept on and off and were relieved to see both men leave the train at Na Trang at 6am the next morning! Cà phê - The BEST coffee in the world! ... read more

Saigon, Vietnam The locals prefer to call this city Saigon rather than Ho Chi Minh City, and after visiting, it seems to be a much more endearing name. We flew in over what looked like patty fields and amazing scenery. I have never seen anything quite like it. Once we got through the 'health' scanners, immigration (which is a very serious business mind you!) and customs we finally got out into the arrival hall of Ton Sut Nuht Airport and were ’accosted’ by lots & lots of people offering us a taxi into the city! Very funny! Saigon is much more humid than Singapore but still manageable so far thank goodness. Once in our taxi (AU$13 from airport to hotel in city) we thought we could relax. Big mistake. The driving here is ... I don't ... read more

What a beautiful city. Gorgeous flowers & greenery everywhere - so well looked after. Everything is pink! They have such a beautiful sense of pride in their city and it shows. It actually looks like a 'Sims' game where there are little 'maintenance' workers everywhere! It's fantastic! We had doors opened to us and people bow to us (not that I’m very comfortable with that) and just treat us like we were royalty (I am surprisingly pretty comfortable with that!). We caught a public bus to Orchard Rd. (S$1), a very exclusive shopping precinct and it was full of colour and noise and people and cars and shops and orchids and .... and ... and... just so much to see & do. Taxi's everywhere. Crazy driver's - not one blinker! They just change lanes whenever they ... read more

Well it's been an amazing couple of days. From getting up at 4.30am Sunday to catch our plane from Adelaide, then a whole day transit in Perth to find that our 0015 flight to Singapore was delayed by 1hr15mins which meant that we missed our flight to Saigon Monday morning. Oh heavens! Not a great start to our trip. But....Jetstar came to the rescue and booked us on the next flight to Saigon the next day and in the meantime provided us with taxi's, 4 star hotel for the night, all meals and VIP treatment through immigration & customs. Unexpectedly in Singapore overnight but in good shape & happy to have a pit stop.... read more
