Sorry for the long blog silence。 We've been travelling quite a bit and continue to run into awful computers when we do find them. Since the last post we made a visit to the village of Tiantouzhai at the 'Dragon's Backbone' rice terraces. It was a wild and bumpy 2.5 hour bus ride from Guilin and a 45 minute walk through the terraces and the village of Dazhai to get to Tiantouzhai. The view was pretty breathtaking. The mountains all around us were entirely formed into puzzle-like terraces. They've been farmed like this for thousands of years. Small footpaths are used to get from village to village and ponies are saddled with farm and construction supplies to move things around. Tourism must boom there in summer months but we were two of only four visitors to ... read more

Yesterday was tough, long, beautiful, frustrating, grueling, rewarding..... We took advantage of the two free mountain bikes available at our hostel to take a bike ride to some of the small villages North of Guilin. The bikes were in pretty rough shape but still better than a lot you see people riding around China. Many bikes you see people on here are the same bikes you'd see on top of a scrap metal heap in the back of a pick-up truck in Chicago. We had a great ride getting out of the city, riding with the morning rush hour traffic. Because the traffic flow is so crazy in town you really just have to look ahead and concentrate on not hitting the people in front of you. We got lost probably five times before we even ... read more

We arrived in Guilin today after a twenty two hour train ride. The train was very exciting. We got off to an interesting start as we came very close to missing the train. Not only did we underestimate the total time it would take to get to the station but we got held up at every possible junction on the Shanghai metro. We arrived at the station about twelve minutes before our train was scheduled to depart. The railway station is enormous and very difficult to navigate for a foreigner. We looked like the scene from Home Alone while we sprinted through the train station with our packs on but, thankfully we made it with just a few minutes to spare. The landscape leaving Shanghai was pretty remarkable. For about two hours or so outside the ... read more

Hey friends, Today was another great day. It's late and we wanted to squeeze in just a quick update. Shanghai is such a weird blend of old and new. Today we saw a man walk an enormous wooden cart full of wood scraps (?) through a busy intersection and park it in front of the Porsche dealership. This kind of weirdness is not uncommon in this city. We went Dongtai road where there was lots of antiques to peruse. We also found our way around some crazy food markets where fish were being gutted still alive on the street. As is most of Shanghai, it was overwhelming and Nora got some great photos. The highlight of the trip thus far has got to be the acrobat show we saw. We saw Era - Intersection of Time ... read more

We've spent fourteen hours in the air and two nights in Shanghai since the last update. After we landed in Shanghai we took the maglev into town. I've told lots of people about how exciting riding it is but, it really is amazing. You can really feel the speed and it's amazing to be looking out onto the Chinese country side. Riding the maglev gives me the same feeling as riding a big wheel! We took the metro (subway) to our hostel and have been using it to get all around town. It took about as long to get accustomed to as any public transit system you've never ridden in the US before. Thankfully there are English directions under all the Chinese. The trains are all connected like one big long car and they're really smooth ... read more

As with any adventure, a lot of the fun is in the knowledge you usually unintentionally acquire. I was talking to my Dad who happens to fly planes for a living. We were talking about where a flight from Chicago to Shanghai (ORD to PVG) will take us. Planes get you to places not only because they're very very fast, but also because they fly the shortest distance between two points (aka a straight line). Since the Earth is a sphere our particular flight plan takes us over the Northern edge of Alaska. We'll be sure to peek out the window from time to time mid flight and see if we catch any snowy peaks. Here is a photo of the flight plan I generated from gcmap.com. The persepective is basically from the center of the ... read more

We're chaotically packing and attempting to make plans for things to do while we're there. Nora made this map that gives an idea of where we plan on going. It'll be interesting to see how much we stick to these plans. Blowing in the wind is the name of the game for this trip. http://g.co/maps/krmzw... read more

This is our travel blog for a trip we've been planning on for a couple of years. We're very excited and we'll keep our friends and family posted as much as possible from this blog. We should be landing in Shanghai on December 14th. In China we'll be travelling through Shanghai, Guilin, Yanshaou, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Nanning. We'll head to Hanoi, Vietnam and Halong Bay. After that we'll zip over to Bangkok and then South to visit some friends in Kaeng Krachan, Phetchaburi. Then we'll return home pennyless and exhausted. Good times.... read more
