Hi! The moto and I are still in Santa Fe, and things are still going pretty swimmingly so unfortunately there'll be very little funny herein. I'm remiss in naming the moto, and any suggestions will be tolerated if not welcomed or used. I asked my 8th Graders to name it, back in March when I brought it home. (She's a girl moto, but I can't go there with the correct pronoun, usually. Too close to home, because I love her so much and I don't want anybody to envision any unnatural acts despite what the police report said.) One of the 8th Graders had a great idea for a name: "Seveera." I liked that one, because the moto is kind of mean and severe looking but it didn't take for some reason. Another 8th Grader came ... read more

Hello, I'm in Santa Fe now. Got here yesterday afternoon, in the middle of a bit of a rainstorm. When it fell I was at a little turnout on Rt. 285 from Cline's Corners, about 40 miles still from Santa Fe. Was talking to a guy there with a sweet BMW GS; pretty typical Santa Fe dude, crazy jacked-up teeth and dressed like an out-of-work pirate, riding a $20,000 bike. Anyway we were gabbing about mileage and tires and oil consumption and so on and then the rain started pelting down like crazy and you'd think this would be annoying, but there are fires all around in the mountains and there'd been no rain for months and how could I be annoyed? It felt so good. The rain quit as soon as I got back on ... read more

I got as far as Clovis, N.M., tonight and I got really sleepy and cold. So I've stopped at a motel. Not just any motel though; I lucked into La Vista! In English, this quaint family-run inn's name translates to "The Vista." Those hucksters in Lubbock could take a lesson or two in value from the La Vista. This is what a seedy crap-shack should be, and for the affordable sum of $29.99 I've finally got a room to match the town it calls home. The La Vista comes equipped with non-locking windows, numerous entertaining mystery stains, in-room tetanus, and in a nod to "New Mexican Style," soothing earth-toned tap water. This will have to be a brief message; the bedbugs and I have an early day tomorrow. Thank you for reading. ... read more

Well hello there. I'm in Lubbock now, at the most depressing Starbucks in the whole wide world. All this afternoon I was excited about settling into the best, seediest motel that $35 would buy and showering and writing this from there, while challenging myself not to think about what the linens would look like under a blacklight. Fancy motels are fun too, but there's something in me that really enjoys rented rooms that are also in-process crime scenes. Yeah yeah, this trip was supposed to be all about the camping, just me and my hammock and two stout trees and maybe a round or two of "Kumbayah" with some wandering folk singers, but the way of my people is to talk a big game about camping and then never do it, ever. Anyway at about 5:00 ... read more

Heh. Hrmm. Well this morning's launch has been pushed due to an upper-atmosphere disturbance over Greenland and ongoing sleepiness. Couldn't sleep last night; finally drifted off at 2:00a. Woke up at 5:30a as planned, surveyed the 10,000 little odds and ends I cleverly left for last and, echoing the brave wisdom of Merriwether Lewis, I made the call: Eff it, I'm'a take a nap and leave tomorrow. Listen haters, being an Intrepid Explorer is as much about naps and needing to finish off the yogurt and Flamin' Hot Jalapeno Cheetos as it is about forging a path to the wild Pacific, okay? You'd know that if you were an Intrepid Explorer like me. Brb, gonna Intrepidly Explore the refrigerator and some Simpsons DVDs for a while. Thank you for reading.... read more

Here goes. I should make it clear that I don't know what I'm doing, with the blog here. Maybe in a few days, after a few more posts, I'll understand how to work it better. I'm old. The idea is, I'm leaving bright and early tomorrow morning for a month-long trip out west and I want you to come along with me. Not for real, but with the little journal here; we'd annoy the hell out of one another if you were along with me for real. I'd eat all your pretzels, and when you'd complain I'd act like I didn't know what you were talking about, even though we'd be the only two people for miles and I had just asked you where your pretzels were packed right before you went up the hill to ... read more
