Oktoberfest Massacre

Wow what a whirlwind these past few weeks have been! Some of the highlights of course have been Oktoberfest in Munich, a surprise country concert at a local bar by our Program Director, (who knew Germans were so into country!?) and an organized “German Style” Beirut tournament against neighboring dorms. First of all, I am pleasantly surprised at how much to do there is in a relatively “small” German city. I’ve been out so many of these nights and done something totally different each night. And school hasn’t even started for the regular German students attending university…they actually don’t even start until the end of October. This is a good sign. So, this week has been really busy. Last Saturday began ridiculously with a make-up class. Seeing everyone roll up that morning ready to learn was hilarious. But IES redeemed themselves with a trip to France in the afternoon. We took the party bus to this giant castle on top of this mountain called Le Haut Kosnigsbourg. First Week in DEUTSCHLAND

It’s so weird today I woke up and realized that I have been here for a full week. This time last week I found myself sitting in between a German-Indian man and an obese Italian on my way to Frankfurt. And now? Now I have a true blue German beer gut. Ask me if I care. I am studying in a medium-sized city called Freiburg (yes, the residents are considered Freiburgers) in the very southwest tip of Germany. The city is fast-paced, not too touristy, and the southern Germans seem to find American students amusing. It’s also been about 85 degrees everyday. Awesome that I packed just about all winter clothes but, hey, I’m not complaining. I am living in a dorm for the Albert-Ludwigs University of Freiburg.
