Tracey, je verhalen verbazen me iedere keer weer.

Indian women are always hospitable
Indian housewives mostly like according hospitality to their guests. In general Indian culture is always in favor of showing respect to guests.

women and men
What would it do and mean to an indian woman, who gets beaten or harrassed, to hear and understand that it is possible (eventhough it's in another country) to divorce your husband and be in loving support and respect of your family. Where to begin, I wonder... The freedom to be who you are and want to be. To do what is in your heart. I guess there are men who don't feel happy with the role society expects from them too. This is an important theme for men and women in the west, but when I read sometihing like this, I realise with a shock what a difference there is. Women BURNT to death...in this day and age! My god.

This is the kind of help we need Nick! Our trouble is that we never know what we are eating (only that it's vegetarian) or how exactly to eat it! Still, it's all an adventure...

Thali
We really enjoyed the vivid desciptions of your experiences. I was lucky to have lunch in a Thali restaurant a few times many years ago when I worked in Oman. The staff I worked with were Indian, most of them vegetarian and I was invited to join them at their favorite Thali shop a few times for lunch. I was lucky as I could follow their guidance on what went with what. Whilst the food was cheap, they were very discerning about the dishes and a long time was spent discussing the contents of each of the little bowls. It was clear that the shop would be in a dire situation if it let its standards drop. Maybe Europeans are the same discussing what they are eating at Macdonalds, but I doubt it!! Nick

Beauty to the eyes !
Hi Tracey, Happy New Year ! I enjoyed your pictures again. So nice for the eyes. Here in Amsterdam its bloody cold and white all over the place. We did not have so much snow since the 80ties. Its so good to be free for a while. Because of the crises there is not so much work. But I have to admit that I really don't care having less money as long as I have more space ;-) 2010 is gonna be a good year, I can feel that through my bones. Wish you and Jim all the best, Love Mickey

I was lucky Nick. The lighting conditions were not as difficult as you might imagine. The Indian photographers present had mega watt lights - huge bright things, I just waited until they lit up and took my photos. They were giving me tips though! - kind of cute, 'madam, open your flash' said one. But I don't like flash, it gives totally unnatural light. I did increase the film speed to 800. I also had the advantage that no-one else was there - plenty of space for me to get a good view!

Not married!
Been married twice Marie-Andree, not doing it again, secretly or otherwise!

wedding
Great pictures! The lighting looks totally natural but I assume that you had difficult lighting conditions to contend with. Were you using flash?

Dear Tracey, a commitment so full of rituals, it must help to have a prosperous wedding in all ways..we like to think.. by the way: are you married? (perhaps secretly? :-) here snow(flakes) galore have fallen on Holland!! the longest traffic jams ever!

Shekawati
I had never heard of this place, but it sounds really interesting. Do they use the word "mandi" in connection with bathing. This is the word for bathing in the Indonesian language and many Indonesian household words have Indian/sanskrit origins. Looking forward to your next update. Regards Nick and Val

turbans
Ah, these turbans! Seen a lot of them in the desert of Marocco. Even had one myself! And for the camal, she's a beauty, a beast, a lama in disguise. Hope you're having a great time. Boldly go and continue!
