I love travelling by train right, but trying to sit on a 4 hour train journey having just got up at 5:30 and being as excited as I was was not something I would recommend for anyone who is prone to fits or fainting. After crawling out of Holešovice station under a newly risen sun, Style of Eye's essential mix gave me sustenance through Kolín, Pardubice and Třebova while Laidback Luke's threw me through Brno and Břeclav and across the Slovak border to Kúty, bringing my total number of countries visited up another one. Then, we finally pulled into Bratislava and I was on my way to the airport to meet Charlie. After finally soaking up the reality that we were both now with each other again and on holiday, we made our way back to ... read more

Short entry to inform all my Czech friends who wax lyrical about Karlštejn that I have ticked it off my list. Me and my flatmate Anne-Sophie did a day trip today, did the tour, ate ice cream, went for a short wander and came back. It was a nice day, but there's really nothing more to write about.... read more

Břeclav (pronounced "brzhetslaf" by czech people and "breklavv" by american tourists changing trains from australia to crack-o) is like the Czech Republic's answer to Crewe, except with moar wine and flat. The town has three especially noticeable features: the first is the railway, being a huge international rail junction situated next to the borders with Austria and Slovakia, so any train going from or through the Czech Republic to Bratislava (and beyond to Hungary and ex-yu) or to Vienna comes through here. The second is, as mentioned, wine - the whole district is just flat, and most of the countryside around is vineyards. The third is what makes it so win - as a result of being so flat, the accepted way of getting around these ends is by bike. Bike is king in Břeclav and ... read more

So... haven't been out of Prague this week, but managed to have one very inspiring cultural afternoon. My friend Jana and I were intent on doing something together today and were planning to try and go out of town, however the weather recently has just been depressing (run away from crap english summer weather and it just follows you, apparently), so it wouldn't have been a good idea. There's been a lot of poster hype around for this temporary installment by "contemporary visual artist" Douglas Gordon at the DOX gallery in Holešovice, which generally looked quite interesting as well, so we decided to go along and see what it was saying. The piece's title was "blood, sweat and tears" and to be honest, we didn't get it at all. It simply featured a load of huge ... read more

Yesterday morning I stepped off my favourite scenic train line in the Czech Republic (the one that follows the Vltava and the Labe north of Prague) in a small town called Bohušovice nad Ohří, which is a kilometer south of Terezín, a town used as a Jewish ghetto during the second world war which had since been converted into a memorial, with various sites around the town open to visitors. It was one of those trips I would not recommend to anyone insecure about death, or emotionally fragile, because these things really can mess with your head. As I did this trip independantly and without a tour or map, I found myself arriving foremost at the site you were obviously supposed to hit last - the cemetary. Most of it was converted into a large memorial ... read more

Yeah, I've left Prague already. Just for an afternoon, as a rather special friend of mine back home had been waxing lyrical about Kutná Hora (a city 75km south-east of Prague) and how necessary it is that I visit it while I'm here, so I said to her, I will do so as soon as I'm settled... which took a lot shorter time than I thought! And as I'm still very much lonely here, I guess my time for lone travels is now. So off I went to hit the iron road again today. There was an epic tram fail on the way to Vršovice station resulting from a wire falling loose from a bridge, which meant I missed the train I was aiming for, and of course on the continent that means you're waiting around ... read more

It's only been a day and a half and I'm already feeling pretty much at home here. The flight over and journey to the flat were both fine, I arrived quite late in the evening and bloody starving, so took the opportunity to go and discover the local 24 hour shop, where I was attacked by some dog, twitching from god knows what someone had slipped in its food. The first czech I learned while here is that a viennese shortbread is known as a "třený bananek", which literally means "fricative banana" and made me lol. Yesterday, first and foremost I had a huge cold, but I spent a productive day unpacking all my stuff, sorted my room out (which is lovely and with loooads of space) and did loads of shopping for stuff I knew ... read more

Currently at Gatwick Airport slurping a skittles smoothie from a definitely "Will It Blend?" inspired milkshake bar in the duty free zone. Everything's gone as expected so far - the 2 expected hold ups, that is. My suitcase cost me an extra £45 to check in for being too heavy, expectedly, and I also had a little hold up getting through security because of the huge amount of electronic equipment in my hand luggage, which I'd put there to make the suitcase lighter. So, cue the security clerk coming along to empty everything out. While he did so he started chatting with me, I told him I was a musician blah blah, moving to Prague for 3 months, and it turned out he'd lived in Prague too (though he was obviously Polish) So he started quizzing ... read more

I'm leaving London for Prague tomorrow, and will be staying for 3 months if the 13 recently elected UKIP MEPs haven't removed the UK from the European Union by then. Expect to see a lot on here :)... read more

...always. Echoings of the naïve voice in my head which told me my last trip to Stockholm would be a simple "get in, play the gig and GTFO" venture were silenced forever this past weekend, for not reckoning with the fact that I was amongst some of the best company known to Zeiburaland and in a city which I clearly had to get to know a bit more simply for being the home of said company. So off I went on Wednesday and in a nutshell, the next 4 nights unfolded to become a test of endurance in every respect with an all-round win for a result. The fun began as we left Birmingham airport and I got chatting to a few fellow musicians, swapped myspaces and drank vodka and coke along the way (with little ... read more
